Honoring David

Festival family fun

Moorestown Township places plaques

in David Gentiles name at Rec Center
lobby, Maple Dawson Park tennis courts
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
The Rec Center lobby was filled
to capacity and overflowed into
the gym with Moorestown families and friends of David Gentile
greeting each other with smiles
and memories of the well-known
Moorestonian on Monday, July 13.
Family members and friends,
along with township council
members, came to the Rec Center
for a dedication ceremony in
honor of Gentile where a plaque
was put up in his name in the
lobby as well as at Maple Dawson
Park tennis courts. At the ceremony, Mayor Victoria Napolitano
and his sister Caroline Gentile
made speeches about David highlighting his personality, his dedication to his education and
friends, his volunteerism and his
love for Moorestown.
There was no question we
wanted to honor David in this
way. David spent a lot of time at
Maple Dawson Park growing up,
Caroline said.
I think (the tennis court dedication) is wonderful. I am sad the
skate park didnt work out, but
this is a good substitute. He did go
there a lot growing up, Davids

mother Joan Gentile Taylor said.

I appreciate what Moorestown is
doing for his memory. All of my
neighbors came to visit. There
are people here I havent seen in
20 years. Its wonderful everyone
hugs and remembers.
David Gentile was born in 1964,
growing up on Maplewood Avenue. He attended Baker Elementary School through Moorestown
High School where he went on to
play football for MHS.
He was always having fun.
Even at a young age, he could
have fun, but was a very fierce
football player, childhood friend
Paul Martin said.
In 1979, at 15 years old, he sustained a broken neck during a
football game, causing him to become a quadriplegic. That didnt
stop him from graduating with
his class, earning a bachelors degree in economics, and volunteering his time with the Moorestown
Recreation Department and the
YMCA, all the while still keeping
a fun-loving attitude and sense of
humor.
He was smart, open and fun to
be around. After his accident,
these same qualities were essenplease see DAVID, page 18

New company takes on townships

solid waste collection services
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Moorestown Council approved
the transfer of the townships
agreement for solid waste collection services from Casworth Enterprises, Inc. to the Gold Medal
Environmental Company at its
meeting on July 13. It also approved an ordinance on first reading to perform upgrades to the

Kings Highway Water Treatment

Plant.
Casworth Enterprises, Inc.,
also known as Casworth Sanitation Services, has been handling
the waste collection services in
Moorestown for awhile.
I think they have fit in well
with the community. Service has
been what we hoped it would be,
Township Manager Scott Carew
said.
According to Carew, a few
months back, Casworth approached the township to let the
town know it was in the midst of
a contract that would have it and
the township taken over by Gold
Medal Environmental Company.
Carew had a lengthy discussion
with the two businesses and said
everything would remain the
same, except the name.
According to Gold Medal Environmental Company President

and CEO Glen Miller, it has approval from the state Department
of Environmental Protection for
the merger. It just needs approval
from Moorestown. If approved,
Gold Medal Environmental Company will close the deal with Casworth and what will change next
Monday will be nothing. Frank
Hozworth, one of the owners of
Casworth Enterprises, Inc., will
be staying on with Gold Medal
Environmental Company as well.
You will still see Casworth
trucks, see the same drivers and
crew, and Frank. The only addition will be John Coggins (head of
the South Jersey division) will be
involved with Frank to help with
the contract, Miller said.
The contact information for
Gold Medal Environmental Services has already been given to the

Of course youre not, but theres no better time to prepare than now

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

ts hard to believe, but just last

week, we saw the first back-toschool advertisement on TV. It took
us by surprise. Oh, no, we thought,
did we sleep through all of July?
Of course we didnt; its just stores
trying to get ahead of the game and
boosting sales in a traditionally down
month.
It got us thinking, though: We have
been presenting back-to-school coverage in The Sun for quite awhile now, in
many different towns, but how can we
make this coverage better?
Our quick answer by being better
prepared.
So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on
your mind here in mid-July, were asking that you put it at the forefront of
your brain or at least in part of your
brain for a few moments.
What will be different about this
school year?
Were going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of

Any questions?
We are tracking down school leaders to
ask them questions about the upcoming
school year. So whats on your mind? Send
us your questions, and well do our best to

questions for school leaders about the

new school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
Generally, well be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you parents, taxpayers and students
need to know before the 2015-16 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions youd like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now. The more questions we get
from you, the better prepared we can
be, and the better information we can

pass along to you.

Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isnt?). Or maybe youve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about repairs that were scheduled for your
childs school.
Wed love to get those questions from
you. Just send an email to us so that we
can include them on our lists.
Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still providing great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership between schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relationship starts with effective communication.
So send us your questions. Well do
our best to get answers.

Citizens should be angry with
townships lack of recycling
I recently moved from Moorestown to
Haddonfield Borough, which for many
years has mirrored every public trashcan
with a recycling can and the sports fields
with plastic 30-gallon containers.
My own experience of suggesting to
Moorestown Township's administration,
public works, recreation department and
library to provide recycling options in public spaces was fruitless. They were polite in
welcoming the suggestion but ended with
the township mantra, "Great idea to con-

sider when the budget allows."

An unseen contributor to recyclables in
the downtown's public trashcans are some
businesses. I can attest to seeing, all too frequently, shop owners and office workers
jamming their trash bags into the public
trash cans, and those plastic trash bags
clearly have recyclables.
The citizens of Moorestown should be
especially angry there is no option to recycle at the entrances of their new municipal
complex, with solar on the roof; after all,
Moorestown is a participant in the Sustainable New Jersey certification program.
Regarding the July 14 Recycling in
Moorestown letter (posted on The

Moorestown Suns website) from John

Khanlian, Lisa Petriello and Barbara Skacel, which upon first reading seemed the
work of three engaged young people, perhaps students, but at least one of the writers is apparently a member of Sustainable
Moorestown, a township committee that
works directly with the Town Council and
township departments.
Therefore, the public needs to ask: Did
they get the answer, "Great idea to consider
when the budget allows?"

Department proud of community partners

By KAHRA F. BUSS
Dept. of Parks & Recreation
The Department of Parks and
Recreation is pleased to have so
many partners within the
Moorestown community. There
are many businesses within the
community that contribute to the
success of the departments many
programs and facilities. TTI Environmental, Inc. is one such company. TTI Environmental Inc.,
headquartered on Church Street
in Moorestown, organized and
participated in a community garden and park cleanup project on
Friday, May 22. Twelve employee
volunteers set out to clean up the
recreational and play areas at
Wesley Bishop Park and to revitalize the parks entrance garden.
TTIs idea to give back to the
community was spurred by the
company celebrating its 30th anniversary this May. Originally located in Marlton, TTI moved to its

1253 North Church St. location,

directly across from the Wesley
Bishop Park, in 2006.
In appreciation of being a part
of the Moorestown community,
continued business growth and in
keeping with its environmental
focus, TTI felt it was fitting to
help the town with something (almost) in its front yard. The garden area at the Wesley Bishop
sign was cultivated and the shape
redefined. In harmony with a few
existing shrubs, TTIs green team
added new plantings and the garden was finished with a thick
layer of black licorice mulch for
plant protection and aesthetics.
Volunteers also walked the sports
campus picking up trash and debris to clean up the play fields and
playground areas.
Due to the diligence and environmental project expertise of
the volunteers, the Wesley Bishop
park project was completed in a
few hours, at no cost to the town-

ship. It was a rewarding experience that enhanced one of

Moorestowns recreational centers and promoted an enthusiastic amount of group synergy, a
passion for the environment and
a sense of community among TTI
employees.
TTI Environmental is an integrated environmental service
company. This Service Disabled
Veteran Owned Small Business
remains privately owned and is
under the leadership William
Dolan, CEO, a veteran of the United State Air Force, and Craig Durand, president. TTI employs
more than 55 staff members and
continues to grow in environmental capabilities, services and locations.

Hashem was born and raised

According to Coggins, the
trucks will remain the same except the phone number will
change. Eventually, the trucks
will be rebranded, but there is no
plan to change them as of now.
Coggins also stated that Gold

agile than other companies.

who have a lot of experience in
this business, and were ready to
do whatever we need to give you
the type of service that you are
used to, Coggins said.
Council expressed its approval,
feeling as long as the service remains about the same, it will be
happy.
Council also approved the ordinance on first reading about the
Kings Highway Water Treatment
Plant. The plant was one of three
the township was studying in response to concerns about the discovery of high levels of the unregulated compound Trichloropropane (TCP 1,2,3) in the water.
The ordinance calls for the appropriation of $710,000 and the
borrowing of $675,600 to be used
for preliminary engineer and design expenses. According to
Carew, the township has put
money for this ordinance in this
years budget.
Council also approved an ordi-

nance on first reading that calls

for the appropriation of $725,000
and the borrowing of $502,550 for
the milling and paving of Pleasant Valley Avenue.
The second reading for both of
these ordinances will be at the
July 27 Township Council meeting beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Town
Hall.
In other news:
The Lenola Hockey Rink was
once again brought up in the
workshop before the council
meeting. According to Councilman Manny Delgado, there has
been discussion of putting in a
multi-court system in the rinks
place, specifically for futsal and
lacrosse, as it might bring more
activity to the area. The multicourt system would provide more
use and maybe a better investment, according to Delgado.
Council members expressed their
support of the idea. Carew said
they are still looking into things
and no decision has been made as
of yet.

MEND planning annual Crab Feast fundraiser in September

This September, Moorestown
Ecumenical Neighborhood Development, Inc., will host its annual
fundraiser. The annual dinner is
the largest fundraiser this important organization holds, and in
lieu of a yet another fancy dinner,
or black-tie event, MEND will be

hosting 2015 Crab Feast. Grab a

group of friends and make your
reservations now for this fun and
delicious event.
Friday, Sept. 25 at the Venue at
Lenola, the Lenola Fire House reception hall, a complete crabby
menu from Georgettis will offer

attendees a wide variety of delicious entrees, including some

from the land, and an amazing
array of desserts. This annual
event sells out quickly and is extremely important to helping
MEND achieve its mission.
MEND is a private, nonprofit
corporation that develops, builds,
owns and manages affordable
rental housing in southern New
Jersey.
Established in 1969,
MEND currently owns 725 apartments in 29 separate locations in
8 towns in the Burlington County
region. Two hundred and fifty of
these apartments are located at 20
different
locations
in
Moorestown. MEND's now 46
year-old mission is to maintain
and expand the supply of affordable rental housing for low- and
moderate-income individuals and
families, including senior citi-

zens and persons with disabilities, who cannot afford marketrate rental housing in our area.
MEND works hard to stay true
to the sentiments of its founder,
Boyce Adams, that Everyone deserves a decent, safe and affordable place to call HOME. Today,
MEND continues its mission by
helping low and moderate income
individuals and families obtain
safe, decent, affordable rental
housing near their places of work
and within their chosen communities.
The Crab Feast and So Much
More! event on Sept. 25 is a fun
way to help this responsible and
commendable non-profit organization maintain its mission. The
evening will boast a delicious
menu, a fun and exciting auction
as well as a DJ to entertain. Reserve your tickets before Aug. 15

and take advantage of the BOGO

offer, two tickets for $135. Charitable donations to MEND help
keep the apartment rents below
market levels, thus easing the
housing costs of MEND tenants
who then can better afford basic
necessities and be contributing
members of their community.
Consider supporting this generous organization now. Contact
the MEND offices and buy tickets
today. If you cannot attend the
event, but would like to support
MEND, donations in any amount
are welcomed. Additionally, if
you or your business or organization would like to sponsor this
fun and important annual event,
sponsorships are available. Details can be found at www.mendinc.org/mends-annual-gala-2015/
or by calling the offices at (856)

Recycling receptacles
needed around township
There are two very different
things we've noticed when we
walk around Moorestown:
1. Every other Wednesday, we
see a blossoming of large blue
containers along all of our streets
and curbsides. There is obviously
widespread buy-in and support
by residents for the county's recycling program. Moorestown folks
are glad to cooperate with the environmentally friendly and sustainable practice of recycling
their bottles, cans, other acceptable containers, cardboard and
paper. And now that we have
moved to single-stream recycling,
its easier than ever.
2. Meanwhile, on the sidewalks
of our downtown business community, at our new town hall complex, and especially at all of our
parks and ball fields, public litter
baskets and trash receptacles are
absolutely overflowing with soda
cans, wax juice boxes, water and
sports drink bottles, paper, etc. all
of which are recyclable, but in the

absence of recycling receptacles

are instead destined for landfills
with other garbage.
These two contrasting situations clearly demonstrate that
our citizens want to cooperate
with and support recycling efforts, but are not being given a
convenient way to do so in public
settings. For example, coaches or
parents would have to physically
collect all the water bottles,
Gatorade bottles and juice boxes
from the kids after each ball game
and then carry them home to
their big blue recycling containers in order to ensure that they
make it into the recycling stream.
Moreover, by not capturing
these recyclables, our township
fails to maximize a revenue
stream as provided by the Municipal Recycling Tonnage Grant
Program that Moorestown participates in annually. These NJDEP
grants provide financial incentives to municipalities to increase
their recycling activities. In 2014,
Moorestown received $58,598. By
doing more to capture more recyclables in our public places and in
our homes, Moorestown would
benefit by this increased revenue
source.
We want to propose a simple solution to this problem:
We ask that our township/

Town Council obtain receptacles

appropriate for each setting clearly labeled for recyclables and
place them along the sidewalks of
our downtown area and at all
parks and outdoor recreation
areas, right next to every existing
litter basket or trash can. Then,
arrange for their collection on the
same schedule as trash is currently collected from these public
places. In this way, our common
space recyclables will make their
way into the recycling stream
rather than into costly and overflowing landfills.
By the way, kudos to the
Moorestown Business Association, or whoever was responsible,
for doing this exact thing all
along
Main
Street
for
Moorestown Day in June! It
was great to see those blue cans
uptown, and people using them
appropriately, even if only on that
one special day.
Were
confident
that
Moorestown residents will be
happy to cooperate with this new
initiative. It will contribute to a
healthier environmental future
while enhancing our bottom line,
thereby making our community a
more sustainable as well as more
beautiful one in which to live.

HASHEM

Civil Affairs and Psychological
Operations.
I was involved more in Civil
Affairs, like nation building and
restoration. My role was really
more as a warrior diplomat, not
really fighting, but nation building and helping people, Hashem
said.
In 1991, he deployed to Saudi
Arabia and Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield
as a Civil Affairs plans officer.
Hashem also deployed to Bosnia
in 1998 for Operation Joint Forge
as deputy commander of Combined Joint Civil Military Task
Force.
Later, Hashem would develop a
training program for civil affairs
soldiers that would become the
standard for U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command.
He deployed once again to the
Middle East in 2004 as commanding general of Task Force 353 and
director of Civil-Military Operations Directorate, Multi-National

Forces Iraq. Upon his return to

the United States one year later in
2005, he concluded his military
career with assignments as president of Joint Special Operations
University and director of training, knowledge and futures for
the United States Special Operations Command and director of
Coalition Coordination Center at
the United States Central Command, where he was responsible
for coordinating international
support to coalition operations in
Iraq and Afghanistan and for
overseeing representatives from
60 different nations.
The people in Bosnia and Iraq
needed our assistance. We helped
families and children out and
gave them hope for a better life.
That is one of the most satisfying
aspects of being in the military
for me. That and working with
young soldiers and people I
served with; I wouldnt have attained the levels that I did without their help, and to see many of
them become successful is satisfying, Hashem said.
His military awards and decorations include the Distinguished
Service Medal, Defense Superior
Service Medal (second award),

Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, numerous international decorations

to include the Polish Gold Star
and Berlin Occupation Medal as
well as the Ranger, Airborne and
the Expert Infantryman Badges.
It isnt about me. This award
belongs to all of the people who
served with and helped me be successful. I didnt get to where I was

David Gentile played at Maple Dawson Park as a child

DAVID
Continued from page 1
tial to his ability to persevere and
succeed, Caroline said.
He was such a free spirit and
that never changed. I look back
and marvel about how he stayed
the same. His injury didnt
change him, Martin said.
During his rehabilitation, the
community organized Davids
Day on May 10, 1980, to raise
money for the Gentile family, in
hopes of helping with the costs
that accrued as a result of Davids
medical bills. With Davids father
being a banker, he started a trust

with the money raised from

Davids Day. One of the stipulations tied to the trust stated if
David were to pass, the money
would be returned to the township.
When David died in February
2001 at the age of 36, Gentile Taylor did just that.
Gentile Taylor approached resident Allan Hanlon who was
searching for ways to raise
money for a skate park, which at
the time was only partially complete. Gentile Taylor donated
$120,000 toward the construction
of the skate park, which was later
dedicated in Davids name in
2002. Money was dedicated for an
ambulance as well as to the
YMCA.

dedicated to David Gentile.
Unfortunately, last year, the
David Gentile Skatepark was
taken down.

Not wanting Davids name to

disappear, Sandra McGuire, a
neighbor and friend of Davids,
along with Theresa Miller of the
Department of Parks and Recreation, worked to propose his
name live on in some other way.
Township council decided to
move his name to the tennis
courts at Maple Dawson Park
where he used to play when he
was a child.
This is about more than the
dedication. It is what David did
with his life after the accident.
Paralyzed from the neck down, he
graduated from high school, he
graduated from college, he
worked on the Recreation Board
and the Board of Directors at the
YMCA. He even established a sys-

pledges. He did all of that while
confined to a wheelchair. That is
what I think is most important,
McGuire said.
The plaque dedicated to David
states Memorial Tennis Courts;
In remembrance of David Gentile; A Moorestown athlete who
loved this park and always played
with heart. A free spirit and fairness to all; Dedicated 2015.
Those who knew David hope he
is remembered for his sense of
humor, his passion for sports and
fun, as well as for all he did for
generations to come.
I hope people remember his
great sense of humor. He loved
the town. He could turn a cloudy
day into a sunny day, McGuire
said.
I did not have the pleasure of
knowing David, but I know it
wouldve been a pleasure because
everyone who did know him remembers him so fondly. I think it
is so wonderful we have these
plaques here at the Rec Center
and Maple Dawson Park that will
be an introduction to David for
those of us who never got the
chance to meet him and especially for young people in our community who can see him as a role
model, as a true Moorestonian
and someone who is a great example. In that way, his commitment
to sportsmanship and fun will
live on in a new generation
of Moorestonians, Napolitano
said.
The township and Davids family thanked everyone who put in
the hard work to get the plaques
dedicated for David.
Many thanks to Mayor
Napolitano, Town Council, Theresa Miller and the Parks and
Recreation Department for recognizing David this way. We are especially grateful for Sandy
McGuire for proposing the project in the first place and for being
his passion champion from start
to finish. Thanks everyone for
coming, Caroline said.
