Procedure
A. Preparatory Activities
Pretest
1. Pupils will answer items number 1-10 of their questionnaire
handout for Distinguishing Fact from Opinion.
2. Pretest answers will be checked.
Motivation
Teacher holds up sentence strips. A sentence is written on one side
and `opinion or `fact on the other side. Pupils have to determine
whether the sentence indicated is fact or opinion.
1. All people must breathe to live.
2. All people love basketball.
3. Blue is the best color.
4. Juan is lazy.
5. Noynoy Aquino is our president.
6. Cebu is in Visayas.
7. Children do not like vegetables.
8. There are more or less 1000 people in Dona Salud.
9. I believe that Davao is the best city in the world.
10.
Most people have two arms and legs.
B. Developmental Activities
Presentation
1. The answers of the pupils for the preceding activity are posted
on the board and categorized whether fact or opinion.
2. Ask more questions to elicit answers involving fact or opinion.
Answers are also categorized accordingly.

Analysis and Discussion

1. Asking and answering questions through Interview
Ask questions holding an improvised microphone and roam
around the room and act like a reporter to look for somebody
who will answer the questions. The one who answer the
question will continue the game.

2. The teacher writes the answers on the board and categorized

each as fact or opinion.
3. Ask: When I asked you to tell what you think or believe about
the fiesta, what did you give me? [Opinion] When you gave
your answer to the questions based on what all people know as
true, did you still give your opinion?
4. Ask pupils to discern what kind of information is given in each
group of posted responses on the board. Ask them how they
arrived to such conclusion.

What are facts?

Facts are statements which can be proven, real for all

people and places, can be observed, historical, or 100
percent true. It is something that exists or has happened.
What are opinions?

Opinions are statements that tell what people think or

believe. Sometimes words and phrases like I think, I believe,
it seems probably, always, never, might, most, best, all and
none signal an opinion.

Application
Read items 11-30. Determine whether each statement is a fact
or opinion.
Enrichment Activity
1. Group the pupils. Read the story. Six sentences are facts. Two
are opinions.
2. Say: Write the facts and then the opinion.
Long ago, books were written by the hands. That was probably a
very difficult and tiring job. Handwritten books were expensive. In 1440,
type was invited. Each letter was a separate block. The blocks were
combined to make words. Soon many books were printed from type. Some
people believe that a very old hand written book is more beautiful than a
printed book.
