MATH QUOTES

Mathematics is as much an aspect of culture as it is a collection of

algorithms. ~Carl Boyer, 1949, calculus textbook

The cowboys have a way of trussing up a steer or a pugnacious bronco which

fixes the brute so that it can neither move nor think. This is the hog-tie, and
it is what Euclid did to geometry. ~Eric Bell, The Search for Truth

Sometimes it is useful to know how large your zero is. ~Author Unknown

The hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our

blessings. ~Eric Hoffer, Reflections On The Human Condition

Mathematics is the only good metaphysics. ~William Thomson Baron Kelvin

of Largs

The most savage controversies are those about matters as to which there is
no good evidence either way. Persecution is used in theology, not in
arithmetic. ~Bertrand Russell

Music is the pleasure the human mind experiences from counting without
being aware that it is counting. ~Gottfried Leibniz

How many times can you subtract 7 from 83, and what is left afterwards?
You can subtract it as many times as you want, and it leaves 76 every time.
~Author Unknown

To most outsiders, modern mathematics is unknown territory. Its borders

are protected by dense thickets of technical terms; its landscapes are a mass
of indecipherable equations and incomprehensible concepts. Few realize
that the world of modern mathematics is rich with vivid images and
provocative ideas. ~Ivars Peterson

Zero, two, four, six, eight

Being even is just great.

Being odd is just fine.
Zero the hero came to school.
Zero the hero knows a rule:
Zero the hero stays in a space,
So all the other numbers get in the right place!
Zero the Hero came to school,
Zero the Hero, he's no fool
Zero the Hero keeps his place
so all the other numbers stay in their place
Yeah!

MATH PRAYER

Dear Father in heaven,

enlighten my mind so that I may recognize Your good works for what they
are and neither add to nor subtract any fraction from all that You have
commanded of me. (Deuteronomy 12:32)
Supply and multiply the seed of Your righteousness in and through me, so
that I may rightly divide the word of truth and present myself to You as a
worker who does not need to be ashamed. (2Corinthians 9:10-11; 2 Timothy
2:15)
For You are worthy of all praise and deserve nothing less than my best, as
there is no other god who is equal to or greater than You.
How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of
them! (Psalms 139:17)
May my thoughts also be a sweet savor to You as I count Your blessings to
infinity, in Jesus name, Amen!

TAKE THE LIMIT

WORDS BY: JOHN A. CARTER
TUNE: "THE RUBBER TREE PLANT"
Say you really wanted to know,
Where all of the y-values go,
As you approach a value - a finite value of c.
Then take the limit,
Take the limit,
And you will find out where all of those y-values go.
So come on in from the left and
Come in from the right
And together you'll find
What's the limit as x approaches,
What's the limit as x approaches,
What's the limit as x approaches c?
Say you really wanted to know
Where the slope of the secants will go,
As you approach a fixed point on the graph of f.
Then take the limit,
Take the limit,
And you will find out where the slope of the secants will go.
So come on in from the left and
Come in from the right
And together you'll find
What's the slope of the tangent at,
What's the slope of the tangent at,
What's the slope of the tangent at x?
Say you really wanted to know,
Where the graph off will go,
As x increases without bound - toward infinity.
Then take the limit,
Take the limit,
And you will find out where the graph of the function will go,
So go on out to the left or
Go out to the right
And with either you'll find
What's the horizontal asymptote,
What's the horizontal asymptote,
What's the horizontal asymptote of f?

Equal positive integers

Theorem: All positive integers are equal.

Proof: Sufficient to show that for any two positive integers, A and B, A = B.

Further, it is sufficient to show that for all N > 0, if A and B (positive integers)
satisfy (MAX(A, B) = N) then A = B.

Proceed by induction.

If N = 1, then A and B, being positive integers, must both be 1. So A = B.

Assume that the theorem is true for some value k. Take A and B with MAX(A,
B) = k+1. Then MAX((A-1), (B-1)) = k. And hence (A-1) = (B-1).
Consequently, A = B.
