Presidents, Two Parties, and the Battle for the Civil
Rights Act of 1964 is the story of the legislative and
political battle to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (H.R. 7152).
Author Todd S. Purdum delivers a compelling, suspenseful,
well organized, and intense narrative about an incredibly
important legislation that was difficult to pass. Purdum
brilliantly captures and shares with us the courage and
decency of the members of Congress and how their values
prevailed.
I did not expect a book about the passing of legislation
to be a page turner, but I was enthralled with this story from
beginning to end. The author weaves in and out of the extreme
political differences and difficult demeanors of Congressmen
and other key players to bring to life the challenges faced at
every turn.
Though the idea that all men are created equal was
written in the Constitution, it was far from a reality for many
