Bonnie Blair to host Liver Life Walk Aug. 1

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN
STAFF WRITER
She may be a celebrated champion,
but iconic speedskater Bonnie Blair will
step into the limelight for something much
closer to her heart than the five Olympic
Gold medals she once wore around her
neck.
Blair will serve as the face of the 15th
Annual American Liver Foundations Liver
Life Walk and 5K Fun Run to be held Aug.
1 in downtown Milwaukee. As this years
American Liver Foundation (ALF) LIVEr
Champion, Blair will share her story with
the 500 individuals expected to head
downtown for the three-mile loop around
Veterans Park.
"My sister Angela (Blair-Allen) suffers

from liver disease," Blair explained in an

interview with the Express News. "She
was diagnosed with Hepatitis C in 2001
and that is why I decided to get involved
in this cause.
The walk is open to the public and
both individuals and teams are encouraged to attend. The event allows people
affected by liver disease to come together
and raise funds and awareness for the
ALF, all while having fun in a festival-type
atmosphere that includes activities for
kids, food and entertainment. All funds
go to support the mission of the ALF to
facilitate, advocate and promote education, support and research for the prevention, treatment and cure of liver disease.
Blair said she is highly encouraged by

What Should You Know About Establishing a Trust?

Ms. Plevak joined Edward

Jones in January 2003

purchases, planning for
children's education, retirement savings, and living in
retirement. Ms. Plevak is

You dont have to be a CEO or multimillionaire to benefit from a trust. In fact,

many people gain advantages from establishing one so it may be useful to learn
something about this common estate-planning tool.
Why would you want a trust? For one thing, if you have highly specific wishes on
how and when you want your estate to be distributed among your heirs, then a trust
could be appropriate. Also, you might be interested in setting up a trust if youd like
to avoid the sometimes time-consuming, usually expensive and always public process
of probate. Some types of trusts may also help protect your estate from lawsuits and
creditors. Currently, only a small percentage of Americans will be subject to estate
taxes, but estate tax laws are often in flux, so things may be different in the future
and a properly designed trust could help minimize these taxes.
If you decide that a trust might be right for you, you should work with an experienced estate-planning attorney. Trusts can be highly effective estate-planning vehicles, but they can also be complex and varied so youll want to make sure you
understand whats involved.
One important decision will be to choose a trustee. The trustee is legally bound to
manage the trusts assets in the best interests of your beneficiaries, so your choice of
trustee is extremely important. Your first impulse might be to select a family member,
but before doing so, consider asking these questions:
Does he or she have the experience and knowledge to manage your financial affairs
competently?
When called upon to make a decision that may affect other family members, will
your prospective trustee act in a fair and unbiased manner?
Will naming a family member as trustee create a strain within the family?
Does your prospective trustee have enough time to manage your trust? Does he or
she even want this responsibility?
Do you have other family members who are willing to serve as trustee if your chosen trustee cannot do so?
This last question leads to another key aspect of establishing a trust specifically,
you can name a co-trustee to help manage the trust, and also a successor trustee
who can take over if the person named initially fails or refuses to act in the capacity
of trustee. Again, you will want to put considerable thought into whom you ask to take
these roles.
And you dont have to stick with individuals, either you can decide to ask a financial institution to serve as trustee. By hiring such an institution, you will gain its
objectivity and expertise, but you still need to ask many questions about costs, services provided, and so on.
Finally, as you develop your plans for a trust, consider communicating your wishes and ideas to your family and anyone else who may be beneficiaries of your estate.
When family members dont know what to expect, disappointment and frustration
can follow. If you know your loved ones are on board with your estate plans, you may
feel even more comfortable in putting these plans in place.
This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones
Financial Advisor. Edward Jones, it employees and financial advisors are not estate
planners and cannot provide tax or legal advice. You should consult your estateplanning attorney or qualified tax advisor regarding your situation.

lic, remove the stigma and get us closer

to a cure.
Blair has had many as triumphs in her
life-My best memory is that first Gold
medal in Calgary. There is something
about doing something for the first time.
The power and emotion behind it is hard
to capture, she said-however, she has
also dealt with much loss as other siblings
have succumbed to illness, and this drives
the Olympian.
My family has been touched by different diseases and Im glad I can help in
different ways, she said. My life has
included highs and lows, sad moments
and extraordinary moments, but thats life.

When my sister was diagnosed, there
was one drug to help you and it wasnt
great. Now there are so many options. It
is amazing how far (the medical world)
has come in such a short time and it is
wonderful for me to have been a part of
that even in a small way, she said.
Unfortunately liver disease gets a bad
rap-You drank too much and ruined your
liver-but there are over 100 types of liver
disease and an estimated 500,000 sufferers in Wisconsin alone. My sister is a
nurse and we believe she contracted
Hepatitis C after being pricked by a needle. Events like this help educate the pub-

Meet Our New Principal

t. Boniface School in Germantown has a great addition, Diana Erlandson,
as our new school principal. Mrs. Erlandson comes to us with great enthusiasm, a positive outlook and lots of experience to share! She is a graduate of Marquette University with her masters in Educational Policy and
Leadership. She also has 19 years of professional experience in education with
9 years as a teacher and 10 years as an administrator. Mrs. Erlandson has been
in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee for the past 15 years, previously she was principal at Northwest Catholic for 5 years and at Lumen Christi for 3 years.

Mary Kay Davies, a school parent said, We are so blessed to have Mrs.
Erlandson! She has such a passion for learning and the leadership skills that
everyone wants in a strong principal. But the best part is that she is approachable, easy to talk to and knows how to achieve the highest academic standards.
If you would like to take a tour of St. Boniface School and meet Mrs. Erlandson,
please call the school office at (262) 628-1955 or check out our website at
www.stbonifacewi.org. Interested parents are also encouraged to attend the St.
Boniface Parish Festival. It will be Labor Day weekend: Friday, September 4 to
Sunday, September 6. In addition to the food, music, and games, there will also
be a booth with more information about the school and the opportunity to ask
questions.

Local woman celebrates 'fit and active' 90th birthday

Most individuals just a decade shy of

90th birthday earlier this month with a
Fitness Birthday Party at her favorite
hang-out, Anytime Fitness located at
Silver Spring Drive and Lilly Road.
With her actual birthday, July 12,
spent with her children, Mary was with
her adopted family a few days later as
friends gathered to wish her well and
watch her blow out the candles on her
cake at the gym July 15.
"I can't say enough about this
place," Mary said of the health club,
which is co-owned by Lynne McElfresh
and Lisa Schmidt, along with their husbands Chris and Jeff, respectively. "The
girls who work here are out of this world
and everyone is so friendly. They feel like
family."
Mary joined the club a year ago as
part of the Silver Sneaker Program and
has been working out faithfully ever
since. She comes to the gym at least
three times a week and exercises for
about an hour and a half, moving from
cardio to strength training to stretching,
and she was named the club's first
Mary Tulachka recently celebrated her 90th "Member to Inspire." She serves as an
birthday at Anytime Fitness in Menomonee inspiration for members half her age not
only with her fitness, but even moreso

with her effervescent personality.

"The fact that I can still get out of bed
and stand up is my main accomplishment," Mary said with a laugh.
As impressive as her spry 4'11"
physique is, more awe-inspiring is Mary's
positive and humorous approach to life. A
widow for 22 years, she speaks animatedly of her husband of 40-plus years,
Norbert, whom she met at Marquette
University where she earned her Master's
Degree in teaching.
"He was a square dancer and a friend
brought me to meet him and I tripped on
the skirt of the square dancing dress I was
wearing and literally fell at the feet of my
future husband," she shared.
The pair went on to get married and
have two children-son Greg, who is a dentist in Darlington, Wis., and daughter
Jackie, who works in the pharmaceutical
field in Massachusetts-and eventually
seven grandchildren who are all in various stages of successful lives yet still make
time for Grandma.
"They call me often and fly me out to

see them and we make a point to stay

close," she said. In fact, Mary's real birthday gift was a surprise trip to Mexico,
with both children and their spouses and
all the grandkids, which Mary learned of
only after she was cryptically told to "get
my Passport ready."
As she looks back on a life well lived,
Mary said, "I don't believe I am as old as
I am and all the events and things I have
lived through. But my best piece if advice
is to be nice to people and open up your
heart. Do what you set out to do and don't
give up."
She has certainly earned herself a fan
base at the gym as those who know her
best speak highly of the nonagenarian.
"Her love for people shines through
as she chats with other members," said
McElfresh. "She has become friends with
members of all ages at the club. Everyone
knows Mary and is inspired by her dedication and healthy and fit lifestyle."
Fitness friends of 17 years Dave and
Lois Lovejoy agree. "She is a great example for all of us," Lois said.

Company seeks DNR

approval of landfill east of
Orchard Ridge facility
Waste Management is seeking regulatory approval to construct a landfill on
42 acres of property just east of the
existing Orchard Ridge landfill site in
Menomonee Falls.
The process and potential timeline
for the landfill was explained during a
meeting of the Menomonee Falls Siting
Committee July 10. Under state law, the
state Department of Natural Resources
(DNR) has final say in where landfill
facilities will be located and how they
will be operated. Local communities can
create a Siting Committee to negotiate
other conditions related to the landfill.
Dan Otzelberger, site engineer for
Waste Management, summarized several landfill sites in the area that are now
closed. There is a nine-acre portion of
the Orchard Ridge facility that is yet to
be constructed. He said that once the
liner system is installed and the nine-acre
site is filled beginning late next year or
early in 2017, that will be the last buildout for Orchard Ridge. Otzelberger said
that portion of the site will have a three
to four year lifespan before it is closes.
According to information from
Otzelberger, in July 2012 Waste
Management submitted a feasibility
report to the DNR regarding a 42-acre
property east of the Orchard Ridge

Landfill and just west of 124th Street. The

site for the proposed landfill includes the
current offices of Waste Management,
which would be moved if the DNR
approved the landfill.
According to information from
Otzelberger, in April 2014, the DNR
issued an "incomplete" letter to Waste
Management, seeking more information
of how to address wetland areas. Waste
Management is working though those
matters at this time and is going through
a
wetland
permitting
process,
Otzelberger indicated.
Otzelberger said that for the potential landfill to proceed, Waste
Management will need to receive a feasibility determination and a wetland permit from the DNR. While the landfill
approval is granted by the DNR at that
point, Waste Management would then
have to submit a plan of operation to the
agency which addresses design and
construction aspects before any work
can begin.
Otzelberger indicated that any construction would not occur until 2017 or
2018. If approved, the landfill at the 42acre site would have a site life of five to
six years.

sectional final over Grafton July 20. With
the win, Menomonee Falls qualified for the
state summer baseball tournament. Photo

Ty Weber then recorded two strikeouts

his second relief appearance of the day to
seal the win for Menomonee Falls, who
also started the regional final against
Whitefish Bay.
"This one seemed a little more intense
compared to Homestead," Weber said of
the save over Grafton.
Menomonee Falls Coach Pat Hansen
noted that in all three playoff games
Menomonee Falls fell behind and rallied
to win.
"This group of kids doesn't quit, they
don't hang their heads and they keep battling," Hansen said.
Hansen said he knew his team could
compete with anyone but also knew they
were playing in a sectional that included
West Bend West, Homestead, Whitefish
Bay and Grafton.
"Thankfully we played our best ball at
the right time, that's what this is all about,"
Hansen said.
He then added: "These kids believe in
themselves and they believe that no matter
what the situation, they can overcome it."
The state summer high school baseball
tournament will be held at Kapco Park
July 24. Menomonee Falls will face
Pewaukee in the second semifinal game of
the day, with follows the 11:35 a.m. semifinal between Howards Grove and

MANAGING EDITOR
The Menomonee Falls baseball team
qualified for the summer baseball tournament by sweeping the sectional bracket at
Whitefish Bay July 20.
"We were working for this in the offseason. We knew we had a great team
coming in and we just battled," Nick Gile
said.
Menomonee Falls opened the day
with a 3-2 win over Homestead in the sectional semifinal. Menomonee Falls scored
twice in the second inning, then added
another run in the third. Homestead
scored two runs in the second inning and
were on the verge of tying the score in the
sixth inning, but relief pitcher Ty Weber
recorded a strikeout to get out of the
inning.
It was the fourth consecutive one-run
win for Menomonee Falls, dating back to
a 2-1 regular season win over Waukesha
West on July 10.
Menomonee Falls opened postseason
play with a 4-3 win against Whitefish Bay
in the regional final July 17. In that game,
Whitefish Bay scored three runs in the top
of the fifth inning but Menomonee Falls
tied the score in the bottom of the fifth
inning as a sacrifice by Josh Schwechel
allowed courtesy runner Boyd Sansone to
score from third base. Menomonee Falls
took the lead in the bottom of the sixth
inning as a single by Gile allowed Zach
Kornburger to score from third base.
In the sectional final against Grafton
July 21 that followed the win over
Homestead, Menomonee Falls got on the
board first as Gile singled to drive in a
runner in the third inning. But Grafton
evened the score with a run in the fifth
inning. Falls was in a position to break the
game open as the first two batters got on
base in the fifth inning. But the Blackhawks
got out of the inning as the next three Falls
batters recorded fly ball outs. Grafton
then took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning.
We never give up, never look down,
just come back fighting," Kornburger
said.
Menomonee Falls responded with
three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Lukas Kell opened the inning with a single
and stole second, advanced to third on a
sacrifice bunt and came home on a double
by Miles Mayer. Jerin Frey then singled,
with a pinch runner coming in for him who
later scored on a single by Kornburger.
Josh Zahn also got on base and came
home on a double by Matt Emmer.
