South Jersey kids share love of the water

The CRYC youth sailing team will host its home regatta on July 30 along the Cooper River
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
If one were to drive along the
Cooper River in Collingswood or
Cherry Hill this summer during a
weekday afternoon, they may see
a team of sailboats sailing along
the water.
These particular boats are not
piloted by adults, but rather kids,
ages 9 to 18, from around South
Jersey. The kids come from as
close as Haddonfield and Cherry
Hill to as far as Sewell and Medford. They have different backgrounds, attend different schools
and have different groups of
friends. However, together they
share a common bond in their interest in sailing.
These kids make up the Cooper
River Yacht Club youth sailing
team. The team competes in the
Mid-Atlantic Yacht Racing Association series on Thursdays during the summer, racing other kids
from across New Jersey and
around the region. The team will
be hosting a regatta on July 30
against the associations other
teams.
The team members all have
had different journeys into the
sport. Some have been sailing for
more than five years, some for as

little as two or three. However, all
11 members talk of their team as
its own little club.
Meeting new people is really
awesome, said Annalise Rowling, 15, of Haddonfield. As far as
I know, Im the only person in my

school or grade that sails.

Cherry Hill resident Skye
Mada, 11, said she didnt know
anyone in her school or group of
friends who sailed prior to starting.
When I started, I didnt really

know anyone, she said. Everyone was so nice to me.

Haddonfield
resident
Leo
Brickner, 12, said he got into sailing because he wanted to do a
unique summer activity.
Its fun to always have some-

thing to do rather than sitting

around doing nothing, he said.
Its fun saying I sail.
Head coach Robert Graham of
Moorestown said sailing requires
a high level of patience. He complimented his team, saying all
members have grown in maturity
since they first started.
Some people, it takes too long
for them to like it and thats when
they quit, he said. Theres a certain level of maturity thats required.
Cameron Acito, 17, of Cherry
Hill said he was attracted to the
sport because of the patience and
maturity required to master it.
I definitely like the independence factor that your actions are
reciprocated through how you
perform, he said.
Its really fun having a big responsibility like this, said
Camerons younger brother, 11year-old Nathan. I like learning
how to race and keep your boat
nice for all of the regattas.
I like the freedom, said
Aidan Ryder, 14, of Medford. We
were alone in our own boats having a good time.
Just like other sports teams,
theres a large time commitment

Summer is always a catch 22

there is never enough time to do
everything we want to do, and too
much idle time. Parents constantly find their children either being
over- or under-scheduled. The Department of Parks and Recreation is pleased to offer a wide va-

riety of activities to help fill those

summer gaps without over-complicating summer schedules.
As summer has reached its
mid-point, there are still a variety
of activities to participate in.
Just because we are knocking on
Augusts door doesnt mean there
is nothing to do. This August, the
Boys and Girls Sports Camp gives
children ages 5 to 12 the opportu-

THE MOORESTOWN SUN JULY 29AUG. 4, 2015

in our opinion

Get ready to vote

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

This years election is very important for New Jersey residents

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

he calendar is about to turn the

page to August, and here we
are, talking about November already. Were talking about Tuesday,
Nov. 3, to be precise. Thats the date for
the General Election this year.
Yes, temperatures may still soar to
the 90s outside right now, instead of
being in the 60s, 50s or maybe even
40s hopefully not as theyre likely to
be in November. Still, the time both we
as voters and the candidates themselves spend now determine what our
lives look like for the near future.
This fall, there is no big name seat
up for election. Gov. Christies seat is
not up for election, though he is doing
some campaigning himself, as we all
know.
There are no Senate or House of
Representatives seats up for election in
our state, either. But still, 2015 could
prove to be an important year locally.
Thats because, as is the case in oddnumbered years, all 80 seats in the
General Assembly are up for election.
These elections are just as impor-

tant, if not more so, on a local level

than an election for president of the
United States. These are the people
who represent your interests.
Throughout New Jersey, municipal
governing bodies and boards of education will also be holding elections to
choose new members to represent the
town. Mayors, councilmembers and
school board members often have a
greater impact on your daily life than
your governor and president.
The governor and president may be
the sexier post to vote for, but your
trash pickup, your property taxes and
your kids school curriculum have
more of an impact on your day-to-day
life, and those local post holders are
the ones who control those areas the
most.
So just because you wont be voting

for the next governor or the next president doesnt mean you shouldnt be in
tune with this Novembers elections
and this Novembers issues.
We at The Sun will be providing you
as much election coverage as we can
this fall, especially when there is a contested election at the municipal level.
If your town has a contested municipal election, expect a full, multi-week
Meet the Candidates series where well
provide you detailed information
about the election itself, as well as profiles of the candidates and their
stances on the issues.
If you have any questions youd like
us to ask the candidates, feel free to
email us at the address to the right.
So while you may still be making
trips to the beach and thinking about
back to school or the start of football
instead of heading to the polls, dont
fall behind on the issues. What happens behind those curtains in November could have a profound impact on
what happens in front of them for the
foreseeable future.

Camp Invention coming

to Moorestown Aug. 37
Camp Invention, a summer enrichment day camp program that
is supported by the United States
Patent and Trademark Office and
the National Inventors Hall of
Fame, is coming to Moorestown
Upper Elementary School the
week of Aug. 3-7. The week-long
day camp for students entering
grades one through six fosters innovation and creativity while
also building self-esteem, teamwork, persistence and goal-setting skills.
Camp Invention not only encourages inventive young minds
through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in a
fun and creative atmosphere, it
also incorporates outdoor activities as part of its curriculum.
Camp Invention students experience winning, success and victory, along with an adrenaline
rush that comes with competition
among students and successful
completion of challenging projects. Camp Invention provides a
great opportunity for inventive
young minds to exercise their creativity and use their imagination
in ways they dont normally get

to. Through real-world problemsolving challenges, they build

things, take things apart, explore
different types of technology and
so much more. Many times, the
students are having so much fun,
they dont even realize they are
learning and developing new
skills.
This years Camp Invention
curriculum is called Illuminate
and was inspired by some of the
nations most brilliant minds, including experienced educators,
inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame and members
of the U.S. Patent and Trademark
Office. Illuminate will encourage
children to explore their inventiveness in the Design Studio: Illuminate module, investigating
circuits and taking on a natureinspired design challenge.
Local programs are facilitated
and taught by educators who reside and teach in the community.
Camp Invention serves more than
87,000 students every year
through more than 1,300 camps
across the nation. For additional
information, visit www.campinvention.org.

Residents reflect on why Moorestown, named the best

place to live in 2005, is still a great community
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
In the summer of 2005, Money
magazine named Moorestown as
the best place to live in the nation.
And while Moorestown didnt retain the title in the magazines
most recent survey in 2013, you
wouldnt know it by talking to
local residents.
I think it still is the best place
to live, councilman and 29-year
resident Greg Newcomer said.
Each year Money looks at a
number of data points, including
job growth, housing prices, median family income, education quality and diversity with a heavy emphasis on certain factors depending on the economy at the time. It
narrows down the list from there
and looks at more fun factors
such as weather, community and
culture. When the list is narrowed down further, Money sends
reporters to the towns to see what
really makes them special to create a top 10.
Donna Rosato, senior writer at
Money, visited Moorestown back
in 2005 and was struck by the
charm of the town, the educational system, the convenient location
to major cities, the history and
the loyalty of residents coming
back to raise a family.
I found it to be a very charming town. It struck me that so
many people grew up and wanted
to move back so their children
could have the same experience.
They were really thrilled about
the schools, there were major employers, and there wasnt much
overdevelopment. That is what I
remember from the town, Rosato
said. Our list is aimed at people

looking for a place to raise their

family.
These same factors are still
true in Moorestown today.
David Lewis of Coldwell
Banker Preferred was interviewed in 2005 as a resident who
grew up in Moorestown, moved
away and came back to raise a
family. As a Realtor, he finds
many people coming back to
Moorestown for a number of reasons, but mostly to raise a family.
There are three things that
make Moorestown special: the
school system, Main Street and
the tree canopy, Lewis said. It is
a great place to grow up and a
great place to raise a family.
Newcomer
moved
to
Moorestown initially for a beautiful house and the excellent school
system. Since then, he has grown
to love the town for its many jewels. For him, the big three are the
school system, the parks and the
people, especially with their volunteerism.
We have the small town feeling where people know each
other and care about each other,
Newcomer said.
For Gina Zegel, a 39-year-resident of Moorestown, her husband
wanted to move to Moorestown
due to its charm. Raising her family here and making great friends,
she now calls it her new hometown.
Her
favorite
part
of
Moorestown is the history and
the community, like Julie Robenhymer, former Miss New Jersey,
said in 2005. She feels it is great to
have a town with rich history and
knows its roots. She also likes the
diversity of people in the town
who all want the same things, cre-

ating a community.
In other towns, you dont have
the same sense of community
like we have here, Zegel said.
According to Rosato, a number
of different criteria could bump a
town off the list, such as a higher
income average and housing
prices, low job growth, over development or poor education. And
each year different factors are put
into consideration. In 2005,
Rosato suspects that Moorestown
had high job opportunities and
was more affordable at the time,
helping it make the list that year.
The towns were a mix of different places across the U.S. But
the No. 1 thing we looked for (in
2013) was strong job market. It
has taken a long time for solid job
growth. Those that hit the list had
job growth, diversity and industry, Rosato said.
This year Money will once
again release its best places to
live list for 10,000 and 50,000 population towns. According to
Rosato, there is nothing a town
can do to make the list as their
numbers play a big factor. But if
the numbers are right, Rosato
said towns can stand out by keeping things fresh.
I think one of the things a
town can do is always try to keep
it fresh: attract new employers, do
what you can to keep the towns
charm, dont over build, add
something like a new art gallery
or stadium, just keep improving,
Rosato said.
Newcomer said that though
Moorestown has a lot of good attributes, he still feels there are
things Moorestown can improve
please see LEWIS, page 19

Loyalty, unique downtown bring businesses to Moorestown

The Moorestown Business Association was created to improve the townships business relations
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
The Moorestown Business Association was established in 1974.
Since its beginning, its mission to
bring together businesses to collaborate and improve relations
among businesses, the township
and residents hasnt changed.
However, like most things, as time
goes on, changes need to be made
to fit the current world.
Ten years ago, the president of
the MBA was featured in an article in The Moorestown Suns first
issue. For its anniversary, The
Sun sits down with current president Don Powell to see what has
changed with the MBA and business itself in Moorestown over
the past 10 years.
Powell has been a business

owner since 1986 with Powell

Building Cooperation, now Powell Energy & Solar, LLC after
merging his construction expertise with his solar technology expertise. He decided to have his
business in Moorestown because
he lived here.
However, he said there are advantages to starting a business in
Moorestown. The community
feels a sense of loyalty to the
town, it has a great and unique
downtown shopping district, and
families are willing to buy local to
keep things that way.
It is a very friendly town. People feel an allegiance to the town.
They actually shop local because
they want the shops to be there.
There are towns where people
dont care about the merchants.
Here, people are willing to spend

a few extra dimes at their local

merchants, which is a great advantage, Powell said.
When starting a business, he
said the big questions to ask are:
Is there competition? and Is
there an audience for my product? In the 2005 Sun article, the
question often forgotten by new
businesses was How are you
going to market your business?
Powell agrees that is still true
today, especially with smartphones and the Internet being
bigger than in 2005. However, he
still feels the former two are the
biggest questions to ask.
You certainly dont want to
try to start up a business and find
there is no audience for it, or you

upon, like any town. For
Moorestown he feels the town can
improve with the expansion of
citizen groups; looking at history
objectively; listening to long-time
residents for ideas; and the way

the town does government.

Moorestonians arent too perturbed if they make the list.
Lewis felt once a town is on the
list, unless something drastic
happens, they are always on the
list. For Zegel, shed like to keep

Moorestown to the locals.

Id like to keep it as our little
secret, Zegel said.

Moorestown made the list, visit

Membership has doubled

Continued from page 17

exact same thing, Powell said.

The MBA is there to help businesses in Moorestown be successful. Members are added to the
MBAs directory, which includes
useful information such as phone
numbers, events and calendars.
The association also offers
monthly meetings and networking events for members. These
are great times to get to know
other businesses as well as learn
different strategies, talk about issues and network, Powell said. It
was through a meeting in February the MBA made its first informal subcommittee called the
Moorestown Merchants Council,
which devotes its time to the
needs and assistance of the retail
merchants in town.
We are here to help businesses, promote businesses and help
people do more business, Powell
said.
The MBA had 114 members in
the summer of 2005. It now has
292 members, doubling in the past
10 years, despite the recession.
Due to its increased enrollment,
the MBA can do a lot more than it
could in previous years.
From 2005 to now, the MBA has
been able to donate money or
items to the township. Starting in
2008, it was able to give scholarships to two graduating seniors
living in Moorestown pursuing a
major in business or a related
field and community or extracurricular service.
The MBA hosts six major
events in town. In 2005, the MBA
hosted four major town events:
Moorestown Day (since 1976),
Candlelight Night (1976), Autumn
in Moorestown Festival (1993) and
the Easter Egg Hunt (1993). Since
then, it has added the Halloween
Parade (2006) and Music on
Main Street Concerts (co-host,
2013).
According to Powell, the MBA
is going add two more events to
try to help businesses in town,
specifically in the shopping districts, Main Street, Chester Avenue and Lenola. The events are

Ladies Night Out in October and

Daffodil Day in spring 2016.
Ladies Night Out is planned to be
a Thursday in October where
merchants in town will host promotions, serve special refreshments and offer discounts to
shoppers. Daffodil Day, a spinoff
of an event from Nantucket, is a
day where merchants will get into
the daffodil theme with yellow
colors and spring freshness.
Weve been doing the same six
events for a number of years. I
and other members thought it
would be a good idea to do more
things to bring people into the
town and businesses. We thought
wed try to add more events and
see if we cant create a little more
enthusiasm in our shopping districts, Powell said.
The downtown-shopping district is one of Moorestowns
biggest appeals and different
from other towns. The walkable
and beautified streets, as well as
variety of retailers, offer a
unique shopping experience.
Having local merchants, as opposed to big retail stores, in the
shopping district is an advantage
Moorestown has. With local merchants, residents know their business like the back of their hand.
The nice ambiance of being
able to shop in little stores and a
nice variety of stores and product
offerings is what makes the downtown shopping area special,
Powell said.
Since 2005, Powell said the
biggest changes there were in the
proliferation of eateries and boutique stores. In 2005, Main Street
had only two restaurants, according to Powell; now there are
seven. Also, many spaces that
used to be offices have converted
into boutique-like shops, and this
is continuing to increase.
Powell hopes for the future of
the MBA that more Moorestown
businesses that arent members
join. There is strength in numbers, and Powell feels with more
people involved, the bigger voice
it will have within the township,
as well as the power to help each
other and the town be successful.
To learn more about the MBA,
events or membership visit
moorestownbusiness. com or talk
to a current MBA member.
