Play description: Winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play. Middle-aged
siblings Vanya and Sonia share a home in Bucks County, PA, where they bicker
and complain about the circumstances of their lives. Suddenly, their movie-star
sister, Masha, swoops in with her new boy toy Spike and the stage is set for an
absurd weekend of unexpected and hilarious consequences. Old resentments
flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell the house. Also, on the scene are
sassy maid Cassandra, who can predict the future, and a lovely young aspiring
actress named Nina, whose prettiness somewhat worries the imperious Masha.
Wickedly funny, Vanya and Sonia and Masha, and Spike is richly laced with the
Chekhovian themes of relationships and yearnings, as well as the characters
namesakes.

Cast List and Breakdown:

Vanya: 50-early 60s - Extremely intelligent. Living in Bucks County, Pa, he is
resigned to live out his life as a single gay man who has never known love and is
resigned to the fact that he will never find it. His contentment comes at the price
of never knowing any life beyond Bucks County. Must have excellent comic
chops and command of language.
Sonia: 50-60 - Vanya and Mashas adopted, spinster sister. She has an inner
discontentment, with sudden episodes of manic temperament. Never had a
romantic life. Sonia is capable of lightning quick shifts between genuine despair
and hilarity. Must be a strong comedic and versatile actress. Ability to
impersonate Maggie Smith essential.
Masha: 50-early 60s - A glamorous and successful actress who goes gallivanting
around the world. A bit grandiose, but also charming. Wants desperately to hold
onto her youth and therefore latches on to a man in his 20s. Always wants to be
the center of attention.
Spike: 20s - An aspiring actor. Super attractive and super fit. Mashas new boytoy. An equal opportunity flirt who is cheerfully self-absorbed. Spends a good
deal of the show in his underwear. Must be a strong comedic actor adept at
physical comedy. Not the sharpest tool in the shed.
Cassandra: 30-60+ - Vanya and Sonias feisty cleaning lady and soothsayer.
She knows her way around a voodoo doll. She is prone to frequent spiritual and
prophetic outbursts of some insight that leads her into her own little reality. Could
have a Caribbean, Gypsy, American, or Latino accent. Must be a strong comedic
actress with excellent verbal dexterity.
Nina: 20s - Pretty, appealing, and sincere would-be actress visiting her aunt and
uncle next door. Star struck and energetic. The quintessential ingnue, girl-nextdoor. She oozes charm.
