ly from Oregon. I had a moss
garden there. How can I get
one started here? I’m now a
retired gardener basking in
the Texas climate.
That climate is not the ally
of a moss gardener. Moss
grows luxuriantly in Texas
during cool winter and early
spring weather. It’s espe-
cially common in the east-
ern half of the state where
the humidity is usually
high. However, once it turns
hot and dry, moss goes com-
pletely dormant and turns
insipid greenish-brown. You
won’t see the same kind of
moss gardens in Texas that
you were used to in the Pa-
cific Northwest. That’s just
a completely different kind
of climate. Concentrate in-
stead on some of the lowest
sedums, dwarf mondograss
and other ultra-low ground-
covers.
Dear Neil: Four years
ago our granddaughter re-
quested a willow tree for
her birthday. We bought one,
and it did fairly well for two
years. However, it then began
to weaken and finally fell a
few weeks ago. It was full of
insects. Is there a better kind
of willow that wouldn’t have
these problems?
Cottonwood borers are a
horrible problem with wil-
lows (also cottonwoods and
poplars), enough so that the
average life expectancy of a
weeping willow in a stan-
dard landscape setting is
probably only five to seven
years. Most other willows
would be about the same.
Willows can be rooted in wa-
ter by using stem cuttings,
but the pertinent question
probably should be: would

org/mps. This won’t eliminate your
junk mail (because many direct mail-
ers aren’t association members) but it
will reduce it. The fee for this service is
$1. If you’re willing to pay a little more
try Greendimes.com, a savvy resource
that for $20 promises to reduce your
junk mail up to 90 percent and will
plant 10 trees on your behalf. Also see

De-catalogue
To reduce or eliminate the paper cat-

Most consumers who use
sunscreen creams and lotions
know about the sun protection
factor (SPF) on container labels. But
when it comes to clothing, a different
measure is used: the ultraviolet protec-
tion factor (UPF).
UPF is a measure of the amount of
UV radiation that penetrates fabric or
clothing.
Clothing and other apparel items
that are sold as “sun-protective” will
have a numerical UPF value from 15
to 50.

“Why not me?” It’s a ques-
tion that many older chil-
dren awaiting adoption ask
themselves each day.
While adoptions at the
Texas Department of Fam-
ily and Protective Services
(DFPS) are up almost 17
percent, the number of chil-
dren awaiting adoption con-
tinues to grow. It’s the older
children who wait the lon-
gest. There are more than
4,000 abused or neglected
children who need loving
adoptive families in Texas.
More than 1,700 of these
children are 10 years of age
or older.
At 12 years old, Reginald
loves playing outside with
other children, running and
laughing. He likes sports, es-
pecially basketball, and he’s
very good at going to new
levels when playing video
games. Reginald would love
to go to a new level in his
family life – from a foster
home to a permanent home.
“Some people think teens
automatically become adults
at 18 and outgrow the need
for parents,” said Carey
Cockerell, DFPS Commis-
sioner. “The truth is, regard-
less of their age, teens draw
on the relationship with
their families for strength
and support long after they
turn 18. Without the bonds
of adoption, a young adult
has no such safety net.”
Children like Reginald
never outgrow the need for
parents. For thousands of
Texas children without per-
manent, loving homes, the
wait to be adopted may be
long and discouraging. But
these children still hold out
hope that someday someone
will open their heart and
give them a place they can
call their own.
Here are a few tips to start
the adoption and foster par-
ent process:

becoming an adoptive or fos-
ter parent on DFPS’s “Adop-
tion: Why Not You?” Web

Learn about the issues
facing children who have
come into the state’s care
because of abuse or neglect

start the process to become
an adoptive or foster parent.
It includes a form you can
fill out that will be sent to
adoption recruitment staff
in your area.

al meeting in your area.
There’s a schedule of meet-

Being an adoptive parent
or foster family isn’t easy,
but just as in birth families,
adults get through with a
good sense of humor and tol-
erance. Anyone who adopts
or fosters an older child
must be comfortable with
the fact that they will make
mistakes. It takes love, cour-
age, endurance, commit-
ment and faith. Most of all,
it takes someone who cares
and can advocate for that
child.

“Messy room” - it’s the one phrase
that will get the parents of virtually
any teenager, boy or girl, nodding in
understanding and rolling their eyes
in frustration. It’s also a common cause

Lots of luck.
But while there’s no miracle solu-
tion, “messy room” stress and frustra-
tion can be reduced.
Start by identifying the source of
your frustration. After all, your child
lives in the mess, not you. However,
what our frustration comes from is
what the mess says about us: about
our authority over our offspring and
our effectiveness as a parent. If our
child can’t see the mess and won’t hear
our requests to clean it up, are we fail-
ing as parents?
For your teen, however, the issue
So, instead of feeling frustrated and
arguing, accept that this is part of the
developmental process. Try setting
sensible family rules that make it eas-
ier to live with a messy bedroom.
Rule one is that while messy is okay,
life threatening is not. Bug attrac-
tors, like old food wrappers and dirty
dishes, aren’t acceptable. You can close
the door on untidy, but unhealthy is a
problem.
You can also set simple, acceptable
rules for family use areas. Cleaning up
after oneself in the kitchen, or getting
that backpack out of the hallway, are
rules teens can understand as reason-
able, even when they see a clean bed-
room as unfair.
