lect boys baseball team is now having try-
out for the 2008 season. Boys must be dedi-
cated and have a love for the game and be
willing to travel. Last year’s team played 69

program is spotlighting Spi-
derwort this spring. Spider-
wort, Tradescantia species, a
genus of over 60 New World
species, ranges from south-
ern Canada to northern Ar-
gentina. Here in North Tex-
as, both T. occidentalis and T.
ohioensis Spiderwort species
are found. Spiderwort grows
individually at first and es-
tablishes clumps. It grows 1
to 2 feet tall with long, blade-
like leaves.
Spiderwort blooms prolifi-
cally in the spring and some-
times in the fall with flowers
that range from white, pink
or purple to bright blue.
Flowers have three pet-
als and six yellow anthers.
Spiderwort blooms early in
the morning. During the af-
ternoon, the flowers usually
close up in the heat, but on
cool and cloudy days, they
may remain open all day.
Each flower lasts for only
one day, but each spiderwort
has many flowers, assuring
a long display in the garden
bed.
Spiderwort can be plant-
ed in full sun to partial or
dappled shade. It grows well
in most types of soil, from
acid to alkaline, from dry to
damp. Spiderwort should be
watered well immediately
after planting and then ev-
ery other week during the
first growing season if there
is no rain.
After the first growing sea-
son, Spiderwort should sur-
vive with existing rainfall
because it is drought toler-

ant. If not given supplemen-
tal water, Spiderwort will go
dormant during North Texas
summers.
When flowering is fin-
ished, Spiderwort may be cut
to the ground. When the fall
rains begin, Spiderwort will
sprout new foliage and may
re-bloom. It frequently stays
green through our mild win-
ters when almost everything
else is dormant. Native Spi-
derwort is a welcome addi-
tion to garden beds. There
are many named cultivars
available at your local nurs-
ery.

WATCHING FOR EATING
DISORDERS

Many pre-teen and teenaged girls

talk about their weight, so it is difficult
for parents to know when a child has
an eating disorder and when she is just
making comments about her weight.
If your child starts what seems like an
obsession with her body image, or talks
frequently about being fat, she may be
in danger of developing an eating disor-
der. If you notice your child seeming “out
of control” around food, sneaking food,
or lying about what she has eaten, she
may have an eating disorder. There are
several other symptoms, but it’s impor-
tant for parents to know that if they are
suspicious that their child may have an
eating disorder, they should see a pro-
fessional.

Eating disorders can be highly problem-

atic. As all loving parents know, good
nutrition and exercise are important for a

Saving money only to lose more?

If you’re thinking of sell-
ing your home without the
assistance of a real estate
agent, chances are you’re do-
ing it to save money. I can’t
argue with your motivation.
After all, real estate trans-
actions involve large sums.
But before you go down that
road, I’d like to share some
information with you to
make sure you’re consider-
ing all factors involved.
Running the numbers
Would you go out of your
way to save thousands of
dollars if in the end it cost
you more than the sum you
saved? That may be the for-
sale-by-owner (FSBO) expe-
rience for many. The worst
part is that the homeowner
who chooses this route defi-
nitely works hard, spends
a lot of personal time and
takes on significant risk in
the process.
It’s not a convincing argu-
ment to simply state that
FSBOs sell their homes for
significantly less than ho-
meowners who hire agents.
So here are some numbers
to back this up. According
to the 2007 Profile of Home
Buyers and Sellers, the me-
dian selling price in Texas
for agent-assisted sellers
was $197,900. The median
price for FSBO sellers was
only $105,000.
Now, wait a minute. The
sample size in Texas may
not have been large enough
to draw statistically signifi-
cant conclusions. The report
itself mentions that. So let’s
look at a larger sample: the
national numbers. The medi-
an selling price for agent-as-
sisted sellers was $240,000
compared to $180,000 for
FSBO sellers. A closer exam-
ination of the survey results
shows a much lower sales
price for FSBOs when the
seller knew the buyer. Per-
haps relatives and friends
often give a good deal to buy-
ers they know. OK, but when
you compare the sales price
of FSBOs where the seller
did not know the buyer, the
median sales price still falls
short at $207,900, which is
$32,100 less than the medi-
an for agent-sold homes.
What does it all mean?
I understand that these
numbers don’t fully explain
every variable at work here.
But you don’t need numbers
or surveys to know this:
A less-experienced person
isn’t as skilled as an expert.
That’s true whether you’re
talking about hitting a golf
ball, solving a crossword
puzzle or handling a real es-
tate sale.
Compare the experience
and abilities of a person in-
volved in a real estate trans-
action every five or 10 years
to someone who works every
day to help people sell their
homes. A lack of experience
can cost you plenty.
If you wonder what kinds
of mistakes sellers make on
their own, here’s the short
list: setting the asking price
too high, stigmatizing the
property as it sits (and sits
and sits) on the market;
losing money by pricing
too low; making remodel-
ing choices that won’t pay
for themselves when sell-
ing; making changes to the
home that actually reduce
its marketability; not tak-
ing easy steps to make the
property more desirable to
attract higher offers more
quickly – the list goes on.
Money isn’t the only
thing on the table
Money may represent the
biggest motivator for selling
on your own, but you should
consider other aspects of
this decision. Making a mis-
step during a real estate
transaction can derail the
sale, cost you money or even
escalate to a court case. Ne-

have a tremendous influence
on a child. A good program
may improve language skills,
social skills and self-esteem.
While no child-care facility
can replace a parent’s love
and attention, well-chosen
care can complement par-
ents’ efforts and enhance a
child’s development.
There are many child-care
choices available, and the
quality can vary widely. A
Texas Department of Fam-
ily and Protective Services
(DFPS) Web site makes find-
ing the right child-care pro-
vider much easier. Search
Texas Child Care, available
at www.txchildcaresearch.
org, offers expanded infor-
mation about care for in-
fants, toddlers, preschool
children, or older children
in your area such as:
■ Special-needs services.
■ Child care that accepts
subsidies offered by the Tex-

ed all over their body, Stickney
says. These scabs are caused by
the animal’s consistent scratch-
ing of one area.
If a pet owner would like to
pinpoint the cause of an aller-
gic reaction, many veterinary
offices offer allergy testing that
can identify the culprit.
One way of ridding the animal
of the allergen is to buy special
allergy shampoos. These help
eliminate the allergen from the
pet’s coat, which may reduce
the reaction. The less exposure
the pet has to the allergen, the
less likely a reaction will occur,
Stickney believes. For these
shampoos to be most effective,
the animal should be bathed
frequently.
Other options for treatment
are antihistamines, fatty acid
supplements and steroid pills
that may be prescribed by a
veterinarian. Also, many dogs
and cats tend to be allergic to
fleas, and pet owners should
constantly keep their pets free
of fleas by using flea control
products recommended by their
veterinarian.
If an animal has an allergy
to dust mites, Stickney recom-
mends dusting and vacuum-
ing often to prevent contact
between the dust mite and the
animal.
Stickney adds that pets may
also be allergic to certain pet
foods. A reaction commonly
seen in pets with food allergies
is scratching that is not con-
trolled with antihistamines or
steroids.
Stickney recommends a di-
etary trial to identify and elimi-
nate the protein causing the
allergic reaction. Finding the
appropriate diet for a pet with
food allergies can be challeng-
ing, and he recommends seeing
a veterinarian who will be able
to make specific recommenda-
tions.
