STANDARD PRODUCTS
Materials and equipment shall be standard products of a
manufacturer regularly engaged in the manufacture of such Comply
products.
CO2 AUTOMATIC FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS
General: Supply and install CO2 automatic fire protection
system wherever shown on drawings and as specified
herein.
Provide fixed total flooding CO2 fire extinguishing system
and companion fire detection system for protection of
rooms as shown on drawings.
Each system to include banks of CO2 cylinders feeding
common manifold from which piping of suitable size is to
run to discharge nozzles.
Detectors be cross-zoned in each protected space and
lead back to status panel. Each system to be two-zone
controlled. Actuation of any detector is to indicate a first
stage alarm condition on status panel and intermittently
operate audio-visual alarm unit. Actuation of any two
detectors, one per zone, is to indicate a fire condition in
both zones of status panel, give continuous audio-visual
alarm and after a preset discharge delay, energize CO2
operating switch-leg up to discharge delay. Detection
system is to include voltage-free contacts for shut down of
mechanical equipment during count-down of discharge
delay (where needed).

ER Requirement (If Any) / Design Specification

Discharge of CO2 may be aborted during discharge delay

period by holding in a free release switch located in status
panel. Time delay device to be adjustable from 5 to 60
seconds.

System not aborted: After delay period, solenoid type

control heads on main cylinders are to operate and release
Comply
CO2. At the same time, pressure operated switch is to
control closing of doors and ventilation shutters to prevent
loss of CO2 after being discharged.

Pressure operated switch: To be fed from the discharge

header by 15mm diameter line.

Comply

Auxiliary manual discharge operation is to be provided

through remote electric switch case or through manually
operated non-electric levers on cylinder control heads.
Either means to be arranged to by-pass discharge delay
and abort circuitry.

Comply

Design system in accordance with BS or NFPA and totally

flood the hazard areas. Concentration to be as per BS5306: Comply
Part 4 or NFPA 12 requirements for deep-seated fires.

Materials and equipment to be first grade, standard current

products of manufacturer, suitable for performance of their
separate functions and to conform to Underwriters
Laboratories Inc., of Factory Mutual System requirements,
or UK equivalent (LPCB).

Comply

Cylinder assemblies to be filled in accordance with the

requirements of BS or NFPA.

ER Requirement (If Any) / Design Specification

Flow calculations are to be provided to prove adequacy of

pipe and nozzle sizes. Calculations are to include
dimensions and volume of room, design temperature, CO2
volume factor, required quantity, size and fill weight of
cylinders, volumetric concentration, discharge time, flow
rate per nozzle, type of nozzle, pipe sizes, nozzle thread
and orifice sizes. Allowance for non-closable.

Comply

Pipes: Black steel, seamless as per A53 or equivalent.

Comply

NPS 3/4 (DN 20) and smaller: Schedule 40, steel pipe;
malleable-iron threaded fittings; and threaded joints.

Comply

NPS 1 (DN 25) and greater: Schedule 80, steel pipe; steel,
threaded or grooved-end fittings and joints depending on
size.

Comply

Manifold: Fabricate from standard weight black steel pipe

and fittings or through hoses.

Comply

Piping joints: To the requirements of BS or NFPA.

Comply

Bushings: Hex steel and limited to reductions of not more

than two pipe sizes.

Comply

Extinguishing agent: CO2.

Comply

Storage Cylinders: Shall be floor standing type, constructed

of high strength steel alloy conforming to all applicable
specifications of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Containers Hazardous Materials or equal approved
Comply
authority. Mount in an upright position and hold securely
with clamps or straps. Each cylinder to have a discharge
valve. Connect cylinders to manifold with non-metallic
tubing through check valve to prevent CO2 loss during
discharge.

Cylinder discharge valve: shall operate by differential force

using cylinder pressure as source. Force differential and
metallic spring are to hold valve closed prior to discharge
and to reverse upon actuation to open the valve. Reversal
is to be by venting agent through an opening on cylinder
valve. Discharge to be not less than 90-95% by weight of
CO2.

Discharge nozzles: shall be multi-jet type of corrosion

resistant brass construction, finished with protective
Comply
housing and with female threaded connection. Nozzle to be
threaded directly to piping without use of special adaptors.

Detection system: each to be fully supervised type in which

any trouble within system causes common trouble buzzer
to sound and trouble lamp to light on control panel. Silence
switch is to be provided to silence trouble buzzer. Trouble
zone lamps are to remain lit until trouble is cleared. Each
zone to have its own trouble lamp. Ring back feature is to
sound trouble buzzer after trouble is cleared if silence
switch is in silence position. Common alarm buzzer and
alarm silence switches are to be provided for each zone.

Hazard alarm: shall be included in detection system and

having outstanding sound level and distinctive tone to warn Comply
of hazardous condition and possible CO2 discharge.
