Dear Neil: We have liriope
(monkeygrass) as a border
plant in our flower beds. It is
looking really sad and we’re
wondering if we should trim
it back to help it grow better.
The plants you mentioned
are two distinctly different
plants. Liriope has wider
blades and produces spikes
of lavender or white flowers
in the summer. Mondograss
(monkeygrass) is its smaller
cousin. Its leaves are much
finer, and its flowers are
inconspicuous. It tends to
spread freely, while liriope
makes clumps. The reason
the type of plant is impor-
tant has to do with trimming
them. You would seldom
need to trim mondograss,
but you could certainly trim
liriope right away, before
new shoots emerge. Apply
a high-nitrogen fertilizer to
it to promote vigorous new
growth. All of that assumes,
of course, that you prepared
its soil at least reasonably
well before it was planted. It
is slightly less accepting of
poor soils than mondograss.
Dear Neil: Our camellias
are turning to a rust color.

bet would be to leave most of
the roots intact and not add
soil, but, instead to plant a
trailing type of groundcover
such as English ivy or win-

Dear Neil: I noticed
last fall that two or three
branches of my pecan tree
were dried and dead looking.
Recently, while watching the
birds through binoculars, I
noticed that something has
damaged the bark of those
limbs. In fact, it looks like the
bark is missing entirely over
18 to 24 inches of each limb.

Prevention, around 1.4 mil-
lion Americans require the
help of a paid caregiver each
year. But finding good home-
care can be a real challenge.
Here are some tips that can
help.
Know Your Needs
The first step to take be-
fore hiring someone is to
determine the level of help
your mother will need. If she
is ill or needs health care
services, there are regis-
tered nurses who can man-
age medical conditions and
administer medications.
At the next level are nurs-
ing aides who have training
in first aid and in helping
patients bathe, go to the
bathroom and transfer from
bed to a wheelchair. And for
those who don’t need skilled
assistance, there are com-
panions and homemakers
who can handle household
chores.
Once you settle on a level
of care, decide how many
hours of assistance she’ll
need. Does your mom need
someone to come in just a
few mornings a week to help
her cook, clean, run errands
or perhaps bathe? If mom
needs constant care, you can
hire aides to work eight or
12-hour shifts or hire a live-
in aide.
Finding Home-Care
Once you figure out your
mother’s needs, there are
three ways in which you can
go about hiring a home-care
aide. Through a:

trained employees. You pay

Overweight people clearly
have more health problems
than normal weight people.
However, mostly carrying the
excess weight in the abdomi-
nal area is associated with
more health risks than mostly
carrying the excess weight
in the lower body. People
with more upper body fat are
apple shaped, while people
with more lower body fat are
shaped like pears.
Researchers are not sure
why abdominal obesity is so
much more risky, but the risk
is definitely real.
Most agree that abdominal
fat cells are much larger and
break down easier than those

Does aging have to mean memory loss?

ASSOCIATION
Improvements in health care and
lifestyles mean that more of us are liv-
ing longer than ever before. But with
that bonus of extra years also comes
worries for many of us about the natu-
ral reductions in our abilities that oc-
cur as we age.
Most of us can accept that our physi-
cal abilities decline with age, even
beginning at a fairly young age (yes,
you’re only 41, but your teenage son
will probably outrun you). What re-
mains a source of stress is that our
mental abilities will also diminish as
we get older.
The most immediate sign of the ap-
parent “decline” is when we find we
can’t remember things. Whether we’re
35 or 65 when we begin to notice less-
ened memory power, it’s often stressful
and possibly frightening.
The reality, of course, is that we all
forget things, regardless of our age. As
a teenager there were homework as-
signments or promises to parents that
slipped out of your mind just as eas-
ily as the name of that colleague you
saw at lunch yesterday. The difference
is that back then you thought it no big
deal, while now you’re sure it’s a sign
that old age has you in its grips.
Experts say that for most people
the decline in memory is actually very
gradual and usually isn’t obvious un-
til age 70 or later. And simple memory
loss is not necessarily a sign of demen-
tia.
While dementia does cause memory
loss, it also includes declines in cogni-
tive and intellectual function such as
comprehension, judgment, learning
capacity and reasoning.
So while having some trouble re-
membering doesn’t mean you’re slip-
ping into senility, if it is something
you’re finding increasingly trouble-
some, you might consider ways to im-
prove memory.

healthy diet, staying physically active
and getting plenty of rest. All can help
combat memory loss while helping you

an effort to raise funds. An 8.5” x 11” journal will be printed
concerning the history of the Wise County Heritage Museum.

World changers hope to help Wise

Jeanne Evans of Rhome was waiting
for a prayer to be answered.
On Jan. 6, 2003, her minivan was
struck by a rock hauler on Texas 114
at Tater Junction. The impact killed
her husband Gordon and seriously in-
jured her and her two grandchildren,
Tiffany and Chris Evans.
The two grandchildren lived with
their grandparents at the time.
As if dealing with the tragic wreck
was not enough, the Evans’ home in
Rhome was in a state of disrepair.
Gordon had started installing new
siding on the house when the fatal
collision occurred. Almost a year-and-
a-half later the siding was still unfin-
ished. Evans was unable to complete

of the faith-based organization World
Changers visited the tri-county area
of Wise, Jack and Montague. World
Changers is a ministry that brings to-
gether youth from all over the country.
They take trips to different regions
and perform house repairs for low in-
come families.

will be housed at Paradise
ISD. The program works by
breaking up the 300 par-
ticipants into groups of 15.
These groups will be com-
posed of junior high and
high schoolers and a few
adult supervisors.
Each group receives a proj-
ect and a host church. The
host church will be located
near the home under repair.
Congregation members and
leaders of each church will
provide snacks and meals
and services for their host
group.

seeking host churches and
people in need of the repairs.

Parents, caregivers, and teachers
are the best sources for information on
a child’s day-to-day behaviors and the
best chance for a child to receive an
accurate diagnosis of attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Doctors

already send their fourth-graders to Graford, and ad-
ministrators at both Rann and Carson had long con-
sidered doing the same.
A committee representing administrators from
both schools began planning the trip last fall, and the
scheduled trip is also the first time students from both
schools will visit the lake, said Kim Barker, assistant
principal at Carson Elementary School.
Administrators initially considered sending stu-
dents to the Sky Ranch 150 miles away in Van, but
decided on Camp Grady Spruce, about 60 miles away
because it’s closer, Rogers said.
About 150 students from Carson and Rann are ex-
pected to go on the trip where they will take hikes
and interact with students from the other school be-
fore they all attend Decatur Intermediate for the next Fifteen students from North Texas Karate Academy in

It's that time of year again.
Nice days in the mid-70s
tempt us with spring, and
then it gets freezing cold
again. I just want it to be
spring and stay that way!
Of course, once summer gets
here, I will long for relief, but
for now summer seems full of
promise, bugs, singing birds
and wildflowers. However,
there are still plenty of win-
ter delights to enjoy that will
be much harder to find come
spring.
Lots of aquatic insects
spend the winter as larvae
underwater and emerge as
adults in spring or summer.
It's fun to see familiar bugs
in their immature stages at
this time of year. Damselflies
are not nearly as skinny as
when they are adults, but
they have three leaf-like gills
on the tail. Dragonfly larvae
are generally stockier than
damselfly larvae but with-
out the external gills. Larval
mayflies come in a dizzying
array of forms depending on
their food preferences and
habitats. Many burrowing
mayflies have covers to pro-
tect their gills and modified

legs to aid in digging. You
can still find aquatic insects
in the summer, but they will
be different varieties that can
tolerate warm water. Many
aquatic insects need cooler
temperatures, because colder
water holds more oxygen.
Plants, too, are in a “baby”
form at this time of year.
Rosettes are overwintering
leaves that will sprout up into
the full plant when the spring
arrives. Most have leaves
very much like the blossom-
ing plant, so if you remember
what leaves belong to what
flower, you can identify the
plant. Remembering this is
not necessarily easy, though.
For several years, a slen-
der-leaved blue-gray plant
stumped me until I finally
figured out that it was yel-

low flax. There are still many
rosettes and sprouting leaves
that I can't recognize until
they grow and bloom, plus a
few pesky plants that I never
manage to see in bloom. It's a
fun puzzle for careful observ-
ers. Flowers may be showy
but if you know the leaves
you can admire the plants
year-round.
What about a bird’s song?
You can't expect them to sing
now, surely. Well, some do.
The lovely White-crowned
Sparrow has an equally love-
ly song that we only get to en-
joy in the winter, since they
don't stay for the summer in
our area. Plus, some of our
residents are starting to sing
now; I have heard cardinals,
Mourning Doves and Inca
Doves recently. Once spring
migration starts, the songs
can actually be confusing be-
cause migrant species may
sing, providing tunes that we
hear infrequently.
Singing birds make me
think of nesting birds. They
hide their nests extraordi-
narily well, but all the leafy
greens that covered these
spots are gone now. Look for
dark blobs in bushes and
trees. Some will just be clumps
of leaves, but others may be
old nests. Cardinal nests are
usually made of grasses with
leaves woven in; mockingbird
nests are made of sticks out-
side and lined with grasses.
