Lesson 3

The Benefits
of the Cross
Introduction:
In order for us to go on and apply the Bible and its truths to our individual lives, we must
understand why Jesus came and the price he paid for us. When he died on the cross, there
were benefits that went with the package of salvation. I call the entire package of
salvation! Lets now find out what these benefits are.

I.

WHAT IS A BENEFIT?
A. Webster defines it as:
1. Anything that is of HELP.
2. Act of KINDNESS.
3. ADVANTAGE
4. To get good from.
B. When we see it in respect to the Benefits of the cross, we see the cross as an
an ACT OF KINDNESS.
C. The GIFTS which JESUS CHRIST paid for us.

II.

WHAT ARE THESE BENEFITS?

A.
B.
C.
D.

III.

WOUNDED for our transgressions: FORGIVENESS of sins. ETERNAL LIFE.

BRUISED for our iniquities: DELIVERANCE from our iniquities.
CHASTISED for our peace: Peace for MIND and HEART.
By his STRIPES we were healed: healing for the BODY, SOUL and SPIRIT.

THE FIRST BENEFIT WOUNDED FOR OUR

TRANSGRESSION.
A. It means FORGIVENESS of sins and ETERNAL LIFE.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
(Jn.3:16)
B. Eternal life is the GIFT of GOD to all who are in Christ Jesus (all who have
received Christ as their personal savior.)
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the
remissions of sins. (Mt.26:28)

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him
that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation;
but is passed from death unto life. (Jn.5:24)
C. Christ took our PUNISHMENT for our SINS. That is why he was wounded.
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us:
for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree. (Gal 3:13)
D. How does God forgive our sins?
1. KNOW that your debt is already paid.
But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was bruised for our iniquities:
the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are
healed. (Isaiah 53:5)
2. ASK for forgiveness.
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as
scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they
shall be as wool. (Isaiah 1:18)
3. CONFESS your sins to God (not man)
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to
cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1Jn.1:9)
E. How can I have the assurance of forgiveness?
1. Assurance by FAITH (believing on Jesus Christ)
These things have I written unto you that believeth on the name of the Son of
God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on
the name of the Son of God. (1John5:13)
2. Assurance by WORD OF GOD.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to
cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1Jn 1:9)
3. Assurance by the SPIRIT bearing witness.
4. Assurance by BEING LED by the Spirit.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
(Rom8:14)
5. Assurance by LOVING OUR BROTHER.
We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the
brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. (1Jn.3:14)

IV.

THE SECOND BENEFIT BRUISED FOR OUR INIQUITIES!

A. What is an iniquity?
1. The evil BORN WITHIN us that breeds TRANSGRESSIONS.
2. The WEAKNESS toward sin.
B. Why is sin different from iniquity?
1. SIN is the ACTUAL breaking of the law (a wound, outward)

2. INIQUITY is the BREEDING GROUND for sin (a bruised, inward). (iniquity

precedes sin)
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
(Psalm 51:5)
C. How do we get iniquity?
Iniquities are sinful HABITS and TRAITS. These are inherited from our
forefathers as they are passed down from generation to generation. It all began
with Adam.
Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God
am a jealous God, visiting the iniquities of the fathers upon the children unto the
third and fourth generation of them that hate me. (Ex0.20:5)
D. We can say that being bruised for our iniquities means that Christ endured PAIN
and SUFFERING. Our iniquities became his BRUISES, so we can believe and be
set free from the CURSE.
E. What are some iniquities?
The tendencies to lie, steal, cheat, gamble, drink, exaggerate, gossip, hate,
covet, lust, greed, jealousy, rebelliousness, etc.
F. Why must I deal with my iniquity even though it is not sin?
God looks at the HEART! He knows all our inward thoughts and desires.
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
(Jer.17:9)
G. How do I become free from the curse of iniquity?
1. CONFESS our unrighteousness.
2. REPENT from our sinful way.
3. BURY the OLD MAN in water baptism.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to
cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 Jn.1:9)
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin
might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. (Rom.6:6)
H. How can I be sure they will go?
1. KNOW Jesus PURCHASED IT already.
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the
chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
(Isaiah53:5)

2. KNOW He has REDEEMED us from ALL INIQUITY.

Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify
unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. (Titus 2:14)
3. KNOW it is done by FAITH.

4. KNOW the WORD tells us so.

See: Micah 7:18,19
V.

that we might have total peace.

things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in
heaven. (Colossians 1:20)

not overcharge you all. (II Corinthians 2:5)
