Interfaith Caregivers
helps keep seniors and
those with disabilities
living independently
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Its more than just a ride.
Look at the cover of the
brochure for Interfaith Caregivers of Haddonfield, and one
will find that phrase proudly displayed front and center.
As the organizations executive
director, Mary Ann Bigelow, describes it, Our goal is to keep
people in their homes, as healthy,
vibrantly and with as much dignity as we can.
That one goal has led the group
to where it is today providing all
manner of services over the
course of 24 years, free of charge,
to seniors 65 years and older and
those with disabilities in Haddonfield and Haddon Heights to keep
them living as independent members of society.
Whether its driving clients to
medical appointments, stores or

Haddonfield made some far away friends last week when students and chaperones from Kasukabe, Japan, toured the tri-state area as
part of the Haddonfield-Japan Exchange. In alternating summers, the program allows students from either Japan or Haddonfield to
visit one another and stay with host families. On July 27, students from the all-girl Kasukabe High School toured the Indian King Tavern Museum, with a few trying on some old fashioned fashion. For more photos, please see page 11. For a release about the visit, please
see page 6.

Throughout the year, The Sun wants to be your source for school information

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

ith schools preparing to

open their doors in a few
short weeks, now is a good
time to talk about the upcoming academic year.
This week, were featuring our first
Back to School special section, which
is included inside this issue. The second section is coming in two weeks.
In the next few weeks, well have
more comprehensive back to school
coverage, including a Q&A with the superintendent of the school district to
keep you informed of all the changes
and excitement on the horizon for the
2015-2016 school year.
At The Sun, were all about community news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meetings as possible and do our best to stay
on top of the hard news taxes,
budgets, elections and the like.
But we want to be able to bring our
readers so much more. To do that, we
need your help.

School news
With the start of a new school year creeping up on us, we want to invite everyone
to share their news with us. From the
classroom to extra-curricular activities, let
us know what is happening in your school,
and well spread the word.

When students achieve in the classroom, in the arts, in sports, etc., we

want to hear about it, so that we can
share that news with the entire community.
We publish an On Campus section
of our paper to do just that to recognize the hard-working students in a
way that stands out from other sections of our paper.
Making the honor roll, winning a
spelling bee, excelling in an extra-curricular activity, its all news to us.
Problem is, we dont always hear
about these accomplishments. Thats
where you come in.
If youre a parent, and your child
does something special, shoot us an
email. Include a photo, if possible.

If youre a teacher or principal, and

you have a special event coming up or
there is other news that your people in
town should know about, tell us about
it.
If possible, well have a reporter
present to cover the event or write a
story and take photos. If not, well figure out a way to get your news into the
paper, one way or another.
Too often, the news is driven by
events that anger or sadden people.
Too often, the good work of young people is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
And there are a lot of young people
doing good these days.
We want to change that. We want to
let everyone in town know when
theres something positive going on,
when young people go beyond the ordinary to help someone or have an outstanding accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so
that we can share it.

Kasukabe students, chaperones get taste of America

Haddonfield-Japan Exchange Committee and host families welcomes group
Late in the evening of Saturday, July 25,
20 students and two chaperones from Kasukabe arrived in Haddonfield. Their plane
landed in Philadelphia around 9:25 p.m.
and was met by Bill Brown, who transported the group by bus to borough hall, where,
after a few welcoming remarks, they were
introduced to their host families.
After a day of rest on Sunday, they began
the first of their daily activities with a
class on American history, as well as some
English idioms and phrases. After a break
for lunch at Maggianos in Cherry Hill they

returned to Haddonfield for a private tour

of the Indian King Tavern, courtesy of
Linda Hess, state staff person. The group
continued with a walking tour of downtown Haddonfield.
Day two consisted of a tour of Philadelphia's Independence Hall and the Liberty
Bell, followed by a visit to Shofuso, a Japanese house in Fairmount Park circa 1600s,
where the combined group of Japanese
guests and Haddonfield students shared
Japanese bento box type lunches.
Wednesday was a visit to New York City,

taking in sites such as the Statue of Liberty, the Battery, Ground Zero, the United Nations Building, Central Park, Rockefeller
Center and Times Square, before returning
home late that evening.
The Amish Country in Lancaster was
the destination on Thursday, where the
group visited an Amish farm and house,
including a one-hour guided tour of the
Amish Country. For food, the group visited

How would you improve the borough?

Share your ideas in Haddonfield Dreams
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
Do you ever look around at
your surroundings in town and
think of an idea that would make
it better? For the first time in its
history, the Haddonfield Foundation will be running the Haddonfield Dreams initiative for September, giving folks the opportunity to express these ideas.
The Haddonfield Foundation is
all about challenging people to
dream wild dreams, and then
working together to make those
dreams a reality.
A local example of something
the Haddonfield Foundation now
helps fund that was once someones crazy idea is Crows Woods.
It was once a trash dump and is
now a beautiful garden with
fields of lush crops.
In the truest sense, Crows
Woods was once a Haddonfield
Dream, but obviously before the
idea for this exhibition, member
of the Haddonfield Foundation
board Joe Murphy said. But it
shows what can happen in our
town when people have big
dreams and then work together to
make them happen.

Special to The Sun

This dream, illustrated by Robert Byrd, involves encouraging people

to clean up Haddonfield's ponds and streams and stock them with
fish.
Haddonfield Dreams: Reverie
to Reality is the companion exhibition to the Haddonfield Dreams
initiative and jointly sponsored
by the Haddonfield Foundation
and the Markeim Arts Center.
Artists and photographers are
encouraged to submit their images and dreams of Haddonfield,
both present and envisioned future. These entries will be due in
late August.
Anyone who cares about Haddonfield is eligible to enter, Murphy said.
All of the dreams are good
dreams, Chief Operating Officer

of the Markeim Arts Center Bob

Hochgertel said.
There will be separate categories for youth and adult artists.
The exhibition will run at the
arts center from Sept. 1 through
Sept. 27, with a reception on Sept.
11. There will be more than $1,000
in cash awards.
The Markeim Arts Center regularly gives awards of $125 for
Best in Show, $75 for second
place and $50 for honorable mention for its juried exhibitions.

Americans with Disabilities

Act has improved access
By Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez
The Americans
with Disabilities
Act (ADA) was
signed into law on
July 26, 1990 to improve public access
for individuals living with disabilities,
and to establish a
comprehensive prohibition of discrimination on the basis
of disability. The law defines a disability as any condition that impairs
one or more major life activities.
Since the law was enacted 25 years
ago, public access for individuals living with disabilities has greatly improved, and the prohibition of
discrimination on the basis of disability has been firmly established
for the 54 million Americans living
with disabilities.
The ADA protects people with both
physical and mental disabilities
from discrimination. In 2008, the law
was expanded to include chronic
health conditions such as epilepsy,
diabetes and cancer.
Across the Nation and in our own
County, we have witnessed the physical changes that have taken place to
our infrastructure to benefit those
living with disabilities. These positive improvements have ranged from
reversing the direction a door swings
and adjusting the height of counters
to the installation of entrance ramps
and the addition of curb cuts at
street crossings.
In some cases, these changes have
meant the difference between a person living with disabilities attending
a theatrical or sporting event, running errands for themselves or even
securing gainful employment.
During this important anniversary, we salute the brave individuals
that fought hard to bring about this
legislation. We also honor the outstanding individuals that have

worked tirelessly to
implement the intent
of the law over the
past 25 years, to enrich
the lives of those living with disabilities.
In order to assist the
needs of persons living with disabilities in
Camden County, the
Freeholder
Board
maintains an office of
Senior and Disabled Services. This
division of the Camden County Department of Health and Human
Services is located in the DiPiero
Center, 512 Lakeland Road in
Gloucester Township. The staff of
the Division of Senior and Disabled
services provides information on a
wide range of topics including basic
benefits for persons with disabilities,
employment resources, health care
and transportation.
The Camden County Division for
Senior and Disabled Services is a
New Jersey Aging Disability Resource Connection. This designation is given to offices that are able to
provide intensive information and
assistance to individuals seeking access to a wide range of services.
They also work to ensure that our
disabled and senior populations are
aware of the programs to which they
are eligible. The senior and disabled
population is changing and we are
doing all we can to address their
needs and concerns.
For more information on the Camden County Division of Senior and
Disabled services, please call (856)
858-1870. If you have any questions
or comments about other Camden
County services, please call me at

Group serves about 315 clients

GROUP
Continued from page 1
senior centers, or helping clients
shop for groceries and running
errands, or calling daily to check
on a clients well being, the
groups volunteers consistently
work toward meeting the needs of
those who are isolated.
They want to be able to live
their lives as they have, as independently as they can, Bigelow
said.
Beyond just the physical needs
of clients, Bigelow said the group
works to help with the mental
well being of those it serves, providing basic human companionship and letting clients know
theyre not alone.
Our volunteers might be the
only person they talk to that day,
Bigelow said.
And the response from those
who the organization has helped
over the years is definite.
Those who visit Bigelows office can see an array of thank you
cards from clients, oftentimes
hand written on beautiful card
stock, with words and phrases
such as cherish, wonderful,

patience, never forget and

thank you, scattered throughout.
One card in particular simply
reads Thank you for caring,
written in such a manner the author clearly had difficulty in
physically writing, but chose to
do so anyway.
That sums it up to me,
Bigelow said. Its beautiful.
Other services provided by Interfaith Caregivers include providing meals on a short-term
basis to those who might have
just returned from the hospital or
similar situations, and the group
also offers respite care to the family members of clients.
Bigelow said the organization
serves about 315 clients, with the
group having averaged about 118
assignments per week in 2014.
The group has about 300 volunteers, 200 of whom participate in
direct service of clients.
According to Bigelow, volunteers simply pick the time of week
or month or year theyre free to
help, and pick their assignments
through a computer registry.
In addition to working with
clients directly, volunteers can
also provide office work services,
serve on a committee or offer ex-

pertise in fund development, public relations, finance and more.

Bigelow said volunteers could
be anybody with the time and will
to help, including retirees, parents with small children, empty
nesters, students or other young
professionals.
Were easy, we dont require a
certain amount of time its all
based on their time and what they
can give, Bigelow said.
Those looking to donate their
time or money, or to just learn
more about the Interfaith Caregivers, can visit www.ifchaddons.org or call (856) 354-0298.
Donations can also be mailed
to Interfaith Caregivers, P.O. Box
186, Haddonfield, NJ 08033, with
checks made payable to Interfaith Caregivers. Mail inquiries
can be forwarded to the same address.
Bigelow said she thanks the
houses of worship, foundations,
local service organizations, individuals and all those who have
been supporting the group over
the years, and hopes more might
consider joining.
The results are immediate,
Bigelow said. You know youve
made a difference in someones
life that day.

Residents and families love the warmth &

Mom absolutely loves life at Voorhees
Senior Living! With wonderful new friends,
and caring staff who go above and beyond
for residents, she quickly decided to turn
her 30-day respite stay into her permanent
new home. That was six months ago, and
now we are all one big happy family!

The idea was born when Murphy discussed it with Hochgertel

earlier this year. The Haddonfield
Foundation set out to ask people
in town what their Haddonfield
dream would be.
If money were no object, what
would you like to see in Haddonfield? We decided it would be even
more powerful if there were visual images of the dreams, Murphy said.
The Haddonfield Foundation is
looking to bring its role to life by
putting together this experience.
To help to promote, maintain
and enhance the quality of life in
the Borough of Haddonfield, we
want people to dream of what our
town could be, and then think of
how they could help make that
happen, Hochgertel said.
The Haddonfield Foundation is
a community foundation devoted
exclusively to Haddonfield. The
group helps fund things that
make the town a better place.
Gifts from Haddonfield people, including legacy gifts such as re-

membering the foundation in

wills, make this possible.
Haddonfield Dreams will also
help to shine a light on the
Markeim Arts Center.
The Markeim plays a very important role in the community
and is a vibrant art center for
Haddonfield and the surrounding
communities, Hochgertel said.
The group is very excited about
the idea and looks forward to
hopefully bringing it back for
years to come.
My favorite part is appealing
to peoples imaginations about
this wonderful town, and realizing that in Haddonfield, one person truly can make a difference.
Not only can we dream, but we
can also make those dreams come
true. Try asking someone the
dream question, you might get to
see an imagination come to life,
Murphy said.
Go to www.haddonfieldfoundation.org/dreams to see the list of
dreams that have been collected
from the community so far.

From Japan to Indian King Tavern Museum

ZANE CLARK/The Sun

Last week, students from Kasukabe, Japan, toured the tristate area, including the Indian
King Tavern Museum on July 27,
as part of the Haddonfield-Japan
Exchange. Clockwise from above:
Kasukabe students and those
from Haddonfield pose for a
group photograph in front of the
Indian King Tavern. Students
had a chance to try on some
clothes from the past and take
some photographs together. Students pose for a picture in front
historical objects. Indian King
Tavern Historical interpreter
Linda Hess demonstrates a
Jacob's Ladder folk toy to students.

turning home to Haddonfield.

On Friday, Aug. 31 the Japanese guests went bowling at Laurel
Lanes, where some of the Haddonfield 65 Club members helped
with bowling instruction, followed by a visit to the Mabel Kay
House, providing entertainment
for the seniors. Then the group
was off to Sagami for lunch, followed by a performance at
Brandywine Senior Living Home
on Warwick Road.
On Saturday, the guests spent
the day with host family activities, and at night headed to Cowtown to see America's longest
continuous running rodeo.
Sunday was reserved as a host
family day, where the host family
determined the days activities.
On Monday, the group took
part in tubing on the Delaware,
one of the most popular activities

of former Japanese guests.

Tuesday found us in Ocean
City for the day, sunning and
romping in the surf, before a
night on the Boardwalk.
Wednesday will be a day to
begin packing and picking up
those last-minute souvenirs to
take home during the day. That
evening, the visiting guests will
dine along with their host families at a Sayonara Dinner at Tavistock Country Club.
Thursday will be a day of tears
as the visit comes to an end and
they depart for the airport.
The cost of these programs is
covered by the Haddonfield-Japan
Exchange Committee, which receives generous donations from
the Haddonfield Lions Club as
well as the Haddonfield Rotary
Club. Subaru of America is a
major supporter as well. The HJE
Committee raised a major portion of the needed funds at the
Sake and Sushi Party and Auction, supported by Sagami Japanese Restaurant and Moore Brothers Wines.
