Detailed Teaching Sequence:

(Provide sufficient detail that would enable a substitute to effectively present this lesson. Bulleted
statements are preferred)
Discuss, as a class, how students think math is used in television and movies
Give students examples or further discuss examples that the students have given
of how math is used in television and movies
Take students to the lab and introduce them to chartGizmo
Have students create a few test charts using chartGizmo
Discuss homework assignment: Watch 30 minutes worth of Olympic coverage.
Record the time (in minutes) devoted to sports, commentary (interviews, special
stories, medal ceremonies, etc.), and commercials. Using this data, create a chart
on chartgizmo.com. Students should bring their data collection and charts to class
so that we can go over the results as a class.
 Due two days after being assigned
Require students to submit an exit slip on which they write one example of how
math is used in television and/or movies
Go over what is due for homework
Guided Practice/Independent Practice/Assessment Activities
Students will collect data of the time devoted to sports, commercials, and
commentary, create a pie chart at chartgizmo.com using the data, and analyze
their findings as a class.
Closure:
Require students to submit an exit slip on which they write one example of how
math is used in television and/or movies
Go over what is due for homework
