Directional Well Limitations for Borets Weatherford Equipment

Setting Depth Recommendation:

Submersible pumps can operate at any angle less than 900 from vertical provided the
unit is landed in a tangent section in the wellbore and a proper motor seal is selected for
the application. Any time the dogleg at the pump setting depth is greater than degree
per 100 feet, degree per 30 meters or 0.15 degree per 10 meters we need to perform
a finite element analysis of the system. Due to the flange connections, bearings and the
shaft couplings, any attempt to operate the system in a well section that is beyond
degree per 100 feet can result in catastrophic equipment failure.
To complete a finite element analysis we will require the following information:

Casing Size and Weight

Each Piece Of Submersible Equipment To Be Installed In The Well.

Production Tubing Size, Weight and Type. Is The Tubing Non-Unset, Upset,
Casing etc

Length of First Joint Above The Pump (is it a full joint or lifting sub)

Is There a Reducing Nipple Between the Pump and Tubing

Is there a Y Tool

Complete Directional Survey Including True Measured Depth, Inclination and

Azimuth.

For directional wells it is important to keep the overall equipment as short as possible.
However; very short pieces in the middle of the submersible equipment string will add to
the stress problem. We would not recommend using adapters between the submersible
equipment components in directional wells unless absolutely necessary. As an example
of adapters if we install 400456 series equipment in a deviated well we should not use
tandem 400 series motor seals. They require an adapter between the seals that is about
6 inches long. The shaft, John Crane seals, head and base of the two seal sections will
be under extremely high stress while installing the equipment in a directional well.
Installing in Directional Wells:
Installing submersible equipment in directional wells requires running through one or
more deviated sections. The materials and geometry of the submersible equipment
does offer some limited ability to handle stresses however; we do have limitations. We
must prevent the equipment from becoming plastic; prevent bearing, seal and cable
damage.
The following two tables are a list of some basic installation guidelines generally
accepted within the ESP Industry. We may be able to do more than the tables
recommend, but beyond these limits we need to perform a finite element analysis.
