Alif, Lam, Meem. (1)

This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of
Allah (2)
Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have
provided for them,(3)
And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was
revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].(4)
Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the
successful.(5)

1) Ja'far al-Sadiq said about Alif, Lam, Meem: Alif is one of the letters of Allah
(In Arabic - translator), Lam refers to: The Powerful and Great Master for all
Creatures. Meem means that God is praised and worshipped. He put this
speech as a guide for the Jude because he did not send Moses and other
following prophets unless they (prophets) were all covenanted with God to
believe in illiterate Muhammad who would be sent in Mecca and would travel
to Medina and would bring a book with divided letters (like Alif, Lam, Meem -

translator) at the beginning of some surahs, which his followers will memorize
and read while standing, sitting and walking. God will make it easy for them
to memorize and will make Muhammad and Ali Ibn Abu Talib to companion
that book in order to put them as a guardian for his science. He (Ali) will
cause all Muhammad enemies to be defeated with his sharp sword and will
convict all criticizers with his distinct reasons. (Bihar-ul-Anvar 10 th Volume
p15)

2) Muhammad al-Baqir said: Alif, Lam, Meem and all letters like this are God
names that Imams match them and pray, so God will answer to their prayer.
Someone asked him: What is the meaning of This is the Book about which
there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah? Imam said: It
means that there is no doubt that Ali Ibn Abu Talib is an Imam. This ayah is
for the Shiyah and those who are conscious of God. They believe in the
unseen which is the Day of Judgment and resurrection of Mahdi. spend out of
what We have provided for them they speak up what we learnt them from
Quran. (Bihar-ul-Anvar 24th Volume p35 )

3) Ja'far al-Sadiq said: About a guidance for those conscious of Allah Who
believe in the unseen God said: They are the ones who believe in
righteousness of resurrection of Mahdi. (Kamal-od-din and Tamam-ulnemah Pahlavans translation 1st Volume p36)

4) Yahya Ibn Ghasim said: I asked Ja'far al-Sadiq about the meaning of this
ayah This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those
conscious of Allah Who believe in the unseen and he replied: Those
conscious of Allah refers to the Shiyah and the unseen is Mahdi due to: And
they say, "Why is a sign not sent down to him from his Lord?" So say, "The
unseen is only for Allah [to administer], so wait; indeed, I am with you among
those who wait." (Yunus - 20) So God informed us that sign is the unseen
which is Mahdi and its proof is this ayah And We made the son of Mary and
his mother a sign and sheltered them within a high ground having level
[areas] and flowing water.(Al-muminun - 50) which refers to Mahdi.
5) Ja'far al-Sadiq said: People would not see God talking to his prophet secretly
but they were obligated to believe in the unseen and Muhammad (s.a.a.w).

God informed us in Quran that all of our speeches will be recorded by an

observer prepared [to record] (Qaf - 18). God said: There is an angel who
writes what you do. We have not seen him but if we do not believe in him, we
are out of Islam and we reject Gods speech. God warned us about
temptations of Satan: O Adams children! Be conscious so that Satan will not
deceive you as he did to your Parents. (Al-Araf - 27) And we have not seen
Satan but we should believe his existence and be conscious of him.
(Kamal-od-din and Tamam-ul-nemah Pahlavans translation 1 st Volume
p169)
6) Hasan ibn Ali Al Askari interpreted Who believe in the unseen as such:
What we cannot perceive and see are those like Judgment and Heaven and
Hell and God oneness etc. These should be comprehended in the way that
God has determined which is Adam and Eve, Idris and Noah and Abraham
and other prophets who affirmed Judgment, Hell and metaphysics even
though they had not perceived them.
7) Hasan ibn Ali Al Askari said about the ones Who believe in the unseen: It
means that they believe in what cannot be perceived like oneness of God and
prophets and resurrection of Mahdi and Judgment etc. These could be
understood only by Gods reasons and by the ways he has pointed. Establish
prayer refers to those who pray in the exact times, with precise conditions.
and spend out of what We have provided for them Refers to those who
give, present and share from what God has provided for them like wealth,
physical power, position, science etc. Those who suffer in the path of
obtaining these advantages and try to share them with the ones who
deserve. They lend money to one who needs. They give a hand to the weak
and save them from problems and help them to carry heavy loads. They
share their vehicles and they give priority to ones who are better in faith and
doing the good. They treat others as a brother. They teach to ones who
deserve it and they tell their friends and those who hope in guidance about
speeches and excellences of People of the House. Ja'far al-Sadiq said about
them: They publish their science.
(Bihar-ul-Anvar 67 th Volume
p266)

8) Hasan ibn Ali Al Askari interpreted And who believe in what has been
revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you, and of
the Hereafter they are certain [in faith]. as such: They believe in what has
been sent by God which is Quran and divine orders. They also believe in what
god had sent to previous prophets like Torah, Gospel, Psalms and The Book of
Abraham etc. They believe that these writings are all from God, they believe

also in Judgment and existence of another world after this one. They do not
doubt about the results of what we do in this world, that, good actions will be
rewarded while evil ones will have a punishment. And who believe in what
means they do not have even a little doubt. Those are upon [right] guidance
from their Lord refers to those who have obtained mentioned characteristics.
They are in bright path of guidance and rightness and they are conscious of
what God has ordered. and it is those who are the successful means they
will survive from what they would fear and they will get what they would
wish. (Tafsir related to Hasan ibn Ali Al Askari p 88)
