Comfort over Safety, Connectivity and Accessibility of a
Walkable Campus

Abstract
A walkable place is when the built environment influences pedestrian activities by offering sense of comfort and
visual interest throughout the street network (Southworth, 2005). A streetscape design that facilitates pedestrians has
been found to influence pedestrian sense of comfort and experiences. Poor quality of streetscapes design with
undesirable walkways condition, displacement of trees, pedestrian - vehicles conflict and inadequate street facilities
have decreased pedestrian comfort and utilization of walking as means for travelling. In contrast, a good quality of
streetscape design will enhance and support pedestrian activities and social life of its users without causing any
impediment to social interaction (Wolfe 1962 & Appleyard, 1981). Given the lack of concern to pedestrian comfort,
this paper discusses on the assessment of the significance of pedestrian comfort over safety, connectivity and
accessibility of a campus. These criteria have been found to be indicators to a walkable environment. Therefore, the
objective of this paper is to study on the influence of the existing street elements to pedestrian walking experiences
based on walkable campus indicators and the significant relationship of pedestrian comfort to safety, connectivity and
accessibility criteria. The quantitative method of preliminary questionnaire survey distributed among 100 campus
respondents was used to collect the data. Bivariate Statistical Analysis, Paired Sample T-Test, Matrix Scattered Plot
and Multiple Correlation were used to analyze the data. The findings specified that there are strong and positive
correlations between comfort and connectivity, as well as comfort and safety criteria. In contrast, it was also revealed
that there is no significant correlation between comfort and accessibility factor. Hence, it is proved that both elements
of safety and connectivity are important to ensure pedestrian comfort in a streetscape design.
