Last week, on August 1, 2015, at 0035

hours, Officers from the Cloquet and Fond
du Lac Police Departments were dispatched
to the 300 block of Ridge Road for a 26year-old man that had been stabbed.

Officers responded and found the man

bleeding from multiple stab wounds in his
leg, arm, abdomen, and chest. The victim
and witnesses identified the suspect a 28year-old male. The suspect had fled the
scene before police arrived.
K-9 units from the Carlton County Sheriff's
Office and Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources, as well as a helicopter
from the Minnesota State Patrol, aided in the
search for the suspect.
The suspect was later located at a house in
the 300-block of 10th Street in Cloquet and
was taken into custody.

On Tuesday, August 4, members of the

Cloquet Police Department
participated in the National Night Out
event. This was the Departments first
official NNO event, which was held
at Veterans Park from 5:30 to 7:30
pm.
National Night Out is an annual
community-building campaign that
promotes police-community
partnerships and neighborhood
camaraderie to make our communities
safer, better places to live. National
Night Out enhances the relationship
between neighbors and law
enforcement while bringing back a real
sense of community and provides an
excellent opportunity to bring police
and neighbors together under positive
circumstances.

The Cloquet Police Department was assisted

by the Fond du Lac Police Department,
Carlton County Sheriff's Office, St. Louis
County Sheriff's Office, Minnesota State
Patrol, and Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources.

The event was a huge success! We

estimate over 400 people attended the
gathering. CPD had two squad cars on
display, K-9 Raja and her handler,
Detective Holman were in attendance,
informational tables, yard games, gifts
for the kids and gunlocks for adults.

The victim was transported by ambulance to

the Cloquet Memorial Hospital and later
transported to Essentia where he is listed in
stable, but serious condition.

There was a bouncy house for kids and

a Bike Rodeo course that was provided
by Carlton County and operated by the
CPD Bike Patrol Officers.

On Tuesday, August 3, 2015, Daniel David

Schafter, 28 was charged with premeditated
attempted first-degree murder for the
stabbing, and faces up to 20 years in prison
if convicted on the felony charge. Schafters
bail was set at $150,000.00 with a 10% cash
option.

CPD officers and their families grilled

hamburgers and hot dogs that were
provided courtesy of Upper Lakes
Food. Bernicks Pepsi provided
beverages.

attendance. CPD officer Silgjord (and member of the
Carlton County Mounted Posse) displayed her horse

We would like to thank everyone who attended
National Night Out. Special thanks to the members of
the Cloquet Police Department and their families, the
Cloquet Area Fire District, Carlton County Mounted
Posse, Carlton County Bike Fleet, Upper Lakes Food,
Bernicks Pepsi, WKLK radio and everyone who made
this event possible. We look forward to learning and
building from this event for next year. Ideally, we
would like to help neighborhoods start their own events
that we will attend and support.

On August 5, officers responded to a house in the 2100

block of Prospect Avenue for a report of a theft from
inside the house. The homeowner reported an
undisclosed amount of cash was stolen from a safe
inside their home. The case has been referred to
Investigations for follow-up.

Also on August 5, Sergeant Benko attended the

Cloquet School District meeting at the Cloquet Middle
School. The meeting was to discuss the future of the
old Middle School and allowed guests to view the
facility. CPD will be following the status of the
building to prepare for any operational changes based
on the final decision for the building.
On August 6, officers responded to the Loyal Order of
Moose for a robbery. Officers learned that a patron at
the business had their wallet taken from their back
pocket. Witnesses described the suspect as an
unidentified Native American male. The suspect fled
on foot and has not been identified or located at this
time.

Lastly, over the past couple months, members of the
Cloquet Police Department have been designing a new
uniform patch. After many designs and modifications,
a winning patch was selected. The patches are
currently being produced and will eventually replace
the current patch. The patch will complement the
