Course(overview:(

History!is!the!study!of!the!written!record.!!With!this!in!mind,!the!goal!in!HOA!is!to!provide!each!student!
with!an!understanding!of!historical!events!using!both!primary!and!secondary!source!material.!!The!students!
will!be!asked!to!comprehend,!analyze!and!evaluate!a!variety!of!sources.!!The!interpretation!of!history!is!just!
that,!an!interpretation,!so!it!is!important!that!students!view!history!from!multiple!perspectives.!!This!approach!
not!only!provides!the!students!with!a!more!accurate!account!of!history,!but!also!provides!them!with!an!
international!perspective.!!HOA!provides!an!excellent!opportunity!for!comparative!analysis.!!For!example,!the!
Great!Depression!was!not!solely!a!U.S.!problem,!but!had!a!huge!impact!through!out!the!Americas.!!
Furthermore,!topics!in!HOA!are!often!intertwined!with!global!issues!that!exemplify!the!growth!of!the!world!
wide!interdependence!during!the!20th!century.!

HOA!is!designed!to!give!the!students!an!appreciation!of!history!from!a!world!point!of!view.!!To!that!
end,!students!will!study!the!nature!of!sources!for!bias!and!accuracy!to!develop!arguments!and!interpretations.!!
They!will!express!their!arguments!and!interpretations!using!multiple!methods!of!assessment,!which!are!
designed!to!prepare!them!to!succeed!on!the!IB!examinations.!
In!addition,!the!students!will!place!events!in!appropriate!political,!social!and!economic!contexts.!!The!
time!frame!of!study!is!from!the!industrial!period!of!the!late!1800s!to!the!Cold!War.!!This!time!frame!offers!and!
excellent!look!at!how!the!past!shapes!the!present.!!The!study!of!history!provides!interesting!and!sometimes!
controversial!answers!to!modern!day!problems!and!situations.!!Because!of!this,!students!develop!a!life!long!
love!of!history.!!Whether!the!candidates!go!on!to!be!scientists,!engineers!or!any!other!field!of!study,!they!will!
remain!historians!at!heart.!
