This fall, the Department of

Parks & Recreation is pleased to
host a Recreation Open House,
Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Church
Street Recreation Center. This
open house is in lieu of the Recreation Soccer Kickoff that has occurred over the last two years.
After much consideration, the
Recreation Department decided
to host this annual kick-off as an
open house, so that Moorestown
residents can have a first-hand
look at the continuously growing
center and the programs the department offers.
As the Recreation Youth Soccer
League gets under way, coaches
and participants are invited to attend the open house. This is an
opportunity to receive their team
shirts, rules and regulations and
meet the coaches. The Recreation
Soccer League has a nearly 50year history in Moorestown and

has served as the foundation for

many novice soccer players.
Additionally, the Recreation
staff will be opening the doors of
the center to showcase the Third
Floor Art Studio, the Recreation
Commercial Kitchen and other
new and exciting facets of recreation. Recreation staff will be onsite to answer questions, give
tours and show samples of the
work being done in these spaces.
The Department of Parks and
Recreation Open House will
showcase, not only the offerings
of the department, but the community collaboration that makes
many opportunities possible. Onsite will be the numerous organizations that make the departments programming possible.
Live Civilly will be on hand,
collecting food for the Live Civilly/Moorestown
Ministerium
Food Pantry and showcasing the
ExCELS Program that includes
after-school healthy snacks and
Homework Help in addition to life

skills programs that will be unveiled this winter. Sean Fischel

Connect will be present with information about its upcoming
run on Nov. 8, proceeds from
which supported the expansion of
the Special Needs Summer Program this year, the Recreation
Youth Soccer program and support. The Perfect Game will be
collecting gently used sports
equipment as well as offering
equipment to local youth.
MooreKids will offer information
about scholarship availability for
recreation programs and more.
MoorArts will showcase its many
arts programs and opportunities
offered to Moorestown residents.
Stop by Sept. 12 and see, firsthand, all that your Department of
Parks and Recreation has to offer.
From youth programs to active
adult and senior programs, there
truly is something for everyone!

Reflecting on a decade of excellence

Moorestown High School Athletic Director Neil Rosa looks back on the school sports teams success
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
From the 10 consecutive state
titles in girls lacrosse to the perfect 12-0 dream season the football
team put together in 2007, the
Moorestown High School athletic
department has been a stable
model of excellence over the past
decade.
At the center of the machine
has been one of the only constants of the entire decade athletic director Neil Rosa.
With approximately 155 league
titles, 86 sectional titles and 36
state titles since the beginning of
the millennium, it was not easy
for Rosa to cover all of the success the school has endured over
his career as the athletic director.
Going into his 14th year in the
position, Rosa still gets excited for
the surprises each season brings.
As successful as all of the programs have been, you hate to say
that one trumps another, Rosa
said. Each new season brings
new faces and new kids and new
challenges that are exciting in
themselves.
When Rosa left Kingsway High
School in 2002 to become the MHS
athletic director, he was very excited to take the new opportunity,
and he hasnt looked back.
All that time ago, when I heard
that the position was open, what
intrigued me was the three pillars
of excellence that the school had
established academics, athletics
and art, Rosa said.
The district believes athletics
play a large role in the education
of a child, and that proved to be
significant for Rosa.
Ive seen a number of superintendents and principals come and
go, but the foundation has never
changed from a beliefs standpoint, Rosa said.
He also acknowledged the community playing a large role in the
success of the program.
Rosa described the community

as rock solid overall and paid

homage to the fruitful youth program that has helped a great deal
with the future of the high school
program always being bright.
He could not say enough about
the support system the high
school athletic program has developed throughout his years as
the AD.
Its been wonderful, Rosa
said. I have tremendous coaches
who root for each other and are
incredibly supportive.
He credited this support playing a key role in the numerous
personal awards he has received
over the years.
Ive been given some outstanding personal accolades, and I
couldnt have done it without the
staff behind me. Those awards
are a product of having the support of the administration, the
board, the principal and the community, Rosa said.
His most recent accolade came
just a year ago when he received
the DAANJ Athletic Director of
the Year for 2014. Rosa was honored at the state conference at the
annual awards banquet in Atlantic City.
However, Rosas favorite honors are those of the program, not
his own.
His
favorite
awards
Moorestown has brought home
during his career with the school
have been the ShopRite cups. The
school has already racked up
three in the 10 years the program
has been around.
Six ShopRite cups (one per
group) are awarded each year at
the conclusion of competition for
fall, winter and spring based on
most points earned during state
championship competition.
The point system heavily values the importance of sportsmanship, docking points from teams
that have players or coaches disqualified at any time during the
season.
These awards speak to more

than just our athletic success, but

also to doing it the right way,
Rosa said.
Rosa went on and on about his
coaches setting this precedent
over the years.
It would be impossible to put
one coach over another, theyve
all been great. You cant argue
with the success that Deanna
Knobloch has had in her historic
run with the girls lacrosse program, Rosa said. From a coaching standpoint, you have to begin
with Bill Kingston, not only the
winningest boys tennis coach in
the nation but a phenomenal cornerstone of our department and a
town historian.
He went on to commend other
coaches who tend not to get recognized as much on a national level.
People tend to overlook the
coaches of the cross country program, John Denning and Lorenzo
Eagles. Scott Atkinson built the
volleyball program from scratch,
and with his help, weve been able
to put together a brand new high
school volleyball league called the
West Jersey Volleyball League;
thats just a testament to his success as a coach. Another off-theradar coach that comes to mind is
Charlotte Heenan and what she
has done with the girls golf program. Shes really pulled it together and turned out some phenomenal women golfers. They are
constantly knocking on the door
of being league champions.
The Quakers also have a strong
team foundation, having a good
relationship with alumni as
many former players come back
to visit.
In fact, Vince Giordano, who
coaches the freshman boys
lacrosse team, and Courtney
Legath, who has been the junior
varsity girls lacrosse coach for
quite some time now, are both former players in their respective
programs.
Laying the foundation for a
program that has blossomed into

one as respected as Moorestown

athletics takes contributions
from everyone in the school.
Rosa has really anchored the
leadership of this unit by taking
the reins of two roles that can
both be considered full-time jobs
in themselves. He is in charge of
a large group in the athletic department and is also the supervisor of the health and physical education department.
As the years go by, the redundancies of a job such as this can
become tedious, but Rosa likes to
keep it fresh, approaching each
year as a new opportunity.
Moorestown hosts seven large

tournaments
at its facilities
annually, and
the scheduling
begins
and
ends with the
athletic director.
I enjoy the
scheduling aspect. I enjoy
ROSA
piecing together the puzzle
and making it all work, Rosa
said. But the best part is working
with
the
coaches
and watching the players compete.

State Police outfitting troopers with body cameras; more could come across state

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

ew Jersey State Police are

spending $1.5 million to outfit
1,000 troopers over the next
nine months with body cameras. Its a
hefty price to pay for technology, but a
very small one when considering the
good it will do.
Body cameras for police have become increasingly popular throughout
the country following police shootings
that made national headlines in places
such as Ferguson, Mo.
Troopers will wear the body cameras on either their shirt or their hat,
and will be required to turn them on
during traffic stops, protests, investigations and while making arrests.

Your thoughts
What do you think about police officers
being outfitted with body cameras? Share
your thoughts on this, and other topics,
through a letter to the editor.

Acting state Attorney General John

Hoffman said the cameras will act as
an objective witness in police-involved
shootings and other use-of-force incidents.
Some local police departments, such
as Glassboro, Paulsboro, Evesham and
even Rowan University, have already
adopted body cameras for their police
forces. And more could be coming, as

the state plans to use $2.5 million in

forfeiture funds to help other local departments buy cameras.
Police body cameras are a wonderful
idea, and any state money that can be
used to help local departments outfit
their officers with them is a good
thing.
The safety and security of the people
of New Jersey are of the utmost importance, above all other concerns of
living in our state. Any initiative that
improves that safety and security
while at the same time serving as an
objective judge for citizens and officers is something that should be explored and implemented.

days, keeping up with his commitment. If he ever fails to post a

sketch, the ALS Sketchathon is
over.
How the fundraiser works is
simple. Donors need to donate as
little as a penny a day, which allows them to see Amos sketches.
So far donors have donated $19.72
a sketch over $4,000 toward the
cause. All proceeds Amos raises
will benefit the ALS Associations
Evergreen Chapter.
I am absolutely floored. I was
originally shooting for $1,000 and
it has quadrupled in over half a
year. I cant put it into words. It is
really humbling, Amos said.
Amos was inspired to start the
fundraiser when Richard Taylor,
the father of Amos then-girlfriend, now wife, was diagnosed
with ALS and passed away. Seeing
the emotions his wifes family
went through, Amos was compelled to help, but wanted to do
something more meaningful.
Amos came up with the ALS
Sketchathon in 2014, around the
same time the Ice Bucket Challenge got big and brought attention to the disease. He felt the
challenge where participants
dumped buckets of ice water over
their heads and donated to the
ALS Association was a great
way to raise funds and awareness,
and was also a nice segue into his
sketching endeavor, which began
on Jan. 1.
Amos decided to create sketches because it was something that
came naturally to him. Growing
up in Moorestown, his mother
liked to draw and inspired Amos
artistic side. Working as a researcher for Alzheimers disease
at the University of Washingtons
Neurology Department, he still

Alyssa on the Ferry

sketches and sculpts as hobbies.
Amos said his strong foundation
for
art
comes
from
the
Moorestown community and the
school system.
For the ALS Sketchathon,
Amos feels his sketches are a positive product for people to have
and enjoy. He usually sketches
people or places, inspired by
things around him, but also tries
to give variety to keep things
fresh for donors.
The sketch that received the
most positive response was of his
wifes father from the 70s. He received a lot of feedback, mostly
from family members, saying
how meaningful it was to them.
In addition to a single donation
to see that day's sketch online,
donors can purchase original,
commissioned sketches for donating at certain levels for extended
periods. Anyone giving more
than $1 for the day receives access
to Amos blog notes concerning
the sketch or the latest ALS news.
Donors can start or stop donating
at any time.
As a scientist, I try to sift
through literature about ALS to

break it down so donors can understand the research and treatment, and they can feel a little
more empowered knowing and
talking about ALS, Amos said.
Amos hopes his fundraiser
helps people in a multitude of
ways. He hopes those who have
dealt with ALS in some way feel a
little less lonely. He hopes they
take home that their support is
doing something for a good cause.
And he hopes they realize the
ALS Sketchathon isnt just about
him, but about its supporters, too.
This is people saying they
have the capability to help change
the world, Amos said.
Specifically for Moorestown,
he hopes residents are inspired to
help and do good as well.
When I was growing up, it was
nice to hear about other
(Moorestown residents) who have
done things to try to improve the
world a little more, taking what
they learned in Moorestown and
doing something good, Amos
said. I hope (the Sketchathon) inspires them to do that in their
own lives either through the
Sketchathon or on their own.
For the future, Amos hopes
more people get involved. He recently put out a call to artists to
donate their sketches or money
for their sketches toward the
cause and using #Sketch4ALS to
spread the word.
For hitting his halfway mark,
he celebrated by sketching in public, giving away ALS bracelets
and getting others to sketch with
him. He plans to do more events
as he reaches goals and other
timeline milestones, ultimately
leading to an end-of-the-year celebration on Dec. 31, his final day of
the ALS Sketchathon.

Marking milestones and bettering Moorestown

Moorestown councilmembers discuss the progress made in government over the past decade
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
A lot can happen in a decade.
For Moorestown government, it
meant some historic milestones,
new faces on council, improvements to and preservation of the
town, and balancing costs, all in
the effort to better Moorestown.
The Sun sat down with two current councilmembers, Phil Garwood and Greg Newcomer, who
have been involved in the
Moorestown government for
years, to talk about what has happened over the past 10 years in
Moorestown and its government.
In 2005, there were some historic happenings on council. That
year was the first in 22 years the
Democrats
had
power
in
Moorestown with Kevin E. Aberant, Jonathan Eron and Ann Bernice Segal on the council as well
as Republicans Daniel Roccato
and Howard A. Miller. Also, Aberant made Moorestown history by
being the first and only Democratic mayor in Moorestown,
with Roccato being deputy
mayor.
Since then, council has had
other historic events. In 2013,
Stacey Jordan became the first female mayor. In 2015, Victoria
Napolitano became the youngest
mayor. Also this year, Manny Delgado
became
the
first
Moorestown council member of
Hispanic descent. The council
today is made up of four Republicans Garwood, Jordan, Napolitano and Delgado and one Democrat, Newcomer.
Garwood feels there might be
some perceived divisions within
the town, but he said that isnt
true. Everyone works together toward the same goal to make
Moorestown better.
We like each other; we get
along; we work together. We do
believe in finding a common
ground to work with everyone
moving forward, and I think that

BRIGIT BAUMA/The Sun

The 2015 Moorestown Township Council is made up of Greg Newcomer, left, Mayor Victoria Napolitano,
Deputy Mayor Phil Garwood, Manny Delgado and Stacey Jordan, not pictured. The current council made history this year with Napolitano being the youngest female mayor in Moorestown and possibly all of New Jersey, as well as Delgado being the first councilmember of Hispanic descent. In 2005, the council was made up
of Mayor Kevin E. Aberant, Jonathan Eron, Ann Bernice Segal, Daniel Roccato and Howard A. Miller.
has been one of the biggest efforts
that we made. While we will hold
our ground, we try to find common ground, Garwood said.
By working together, the council, along with many others, has
accomplished many things over
the past decade.
The town is the work of many
hands and the town is great because of that, Newcomer said.
One of those hands is the
Moorestown Mall. It has seen
much redevelopment over the
years, including an updated
movie theater and the building of
restaurants. It is now allowed to
serve alcohol due to voters allowing the sale of liquor licenses
within the town.
The township council approved
a referendum that would allow
the sale by auction of six liquor licenses with estimates that each li-

cense could sell for more than $1

million each in 2007. However, it
did not receive enough votes to
pass. In 2011, voters repealed the
liquor ban. The liquor licenses
were sold and restricted to the
Moorestown Mall. Since its passing, all the licenses have been
sold, giving the town a surplus of
more than $6 million.
Other major happenings include the acquisition of a mobile
stage for town events, the building of the library and Town Hall
complex, the preservation of
open space, updates to the recreation building, a township civility
code, increased efforts in sustainability, and a visioning report as a
reference point for what people
would like to see within the town.
All of these improvements
were accomplished, but not without dealing with major issues and

challenges.
Since
its
beginning,
Moorestown township council
has kept up the Quaker tradition
of hearing from everyone who
wished to speak. They continue to
do so today, but Newcomer feels it
hasnt been the same. Communication is key, and with the advent
of computers, emails and text
messaging, direct communication has gone down. Newcomer
would like to see more people
talking and attending meetings,
from committee members to curious citizens.
In 2005, we had a lot more direct communication in a lot of
ways, and that is true everywhere, but one of the great things
about this town is we always
look for input and hear out what
they have to say in a Quaker tradition, Newcomer said. Many

people have good ideas we need

to tell them to come to council
meetings to express their ideas.
Also, over the past 10 years, the
municipal operating budget has
gone up, as it has for many towns.
However, Moorestown has adapted to these changes by reducing
staff, looking for alternative revenues and grants, and working together to keep the services the
town offers intact and growing.
A recent issue the council has
had to deal with was finding the
unregulated
compound
of
Trichloropropane (TCP 1,2,3) in
the towns wells last fall. The
council worked with the Department of Environmental Protection as well as other experts to
come up with a plan to get rid of
the possible carcinogen. As of
now, the plan is to test Well 7 on a
monthly basis, as it was a detect
and then non-detect, put Well 9 on
a pilot program, and work on the
infrastructure of all of the water
treatment plants in town.
For the future, Garwood would
like see work done on the towns
bike paths, improvement of infrastructure, and growth in parks
and recreation. Newcomer would
like to see the use of solar panels
in town, Moorestown become a
champion for improving the arts,
and civil debates brought back
into town during election time.
Both would like to keep costs
down, while continuing good
services, and see the old library
come down and become green or
open space for the township.
I hope we stay the same path.
It is hard to keep a government
such as this from growing too
fast. You have to make sure you
grow at a measured pace and
make sure we do our projects at a
measured pace so we can sustain
it, Garwood said.
We should celebrate more, as
we did in 2005 with the year-long
celebration. We dont need Money
magazine to tell us we are a great
town. We are, Newcomer said.
