Guideline to KEDAP Module

Introduction
The KEDAP Module is prepared to guide teachers in their teaching and learning
process. Various activities have been planned in this module but teachers are
encouraged to adopt and adapt the activities according to the abilities of their learners in
accordance to their level of knowledge and needs.

Objectives
To enable the Orang Asli and indigenous parents to read and write simple English
words, phrases and sentences.
To enable Orang Asli and indigenous parents to speak and communicate using simple
English language.

Concept of Module
The module is prepared based on the functional literacy theme. Each theme consists of
activities of specific skills the learners need to master pertaining to the learning stages
and sub-themes which have been included in the literacy function.
The teaching and learning process suggested in the module is segmented into three
phases. They are Engage, Explore and Evaluate (3E Model).
Various approaches are suggested to assist learners to master the 3R skills (Reading,
Writing and Arithmetic).
The integration of activities and the use of basic ICT skill will enable learners to improve
their literacy level.
The 3E model helps teachers integrate the curriculum element contents such as
communication skills, functional skills, social skill and values. This model also helps
teachers to incorporate the teaching and learning pedagogical principles as well as
andragogy principles.

The Engage Phase is the introduction phase for each theme. Teacher explains function
pertaining to each theme. The activities are aimed at stimulating the learners thinking
on the importance of mastering the 3R skills.
The Explore Phase is the development phase where the learners carry out hands on
activities where the teacher provides explanation for the learners to acquire the 3R
skills, social skills, functional skills and values. Related functional literacy is
emphasized.
The Evaluate Phase is the platform for the teacher to access the progress of the
learners through activities that have been carried out.

Table 1 shows functions of each phase of the 3E model:

Phase

Functions

Engage

Stimulate learners thinking.

Attract learners attention.
Explain the themes function.
Explain the needs to read, write and count that are relevant in daily life.
Introduce the contents to be learnt.
Co-relate the themes and sub-themes.

Explore

Develop learning content through :

Various hands on activity for knowledge acquisition and mastery of
skills.
3R drills (read, write, arithmetic)
Introduce relevant key words pertaining to themes and sub-themes.
Give relevant examples.

Evaluate

Assessing learners through informal activities.

Through this 3E model, the teaching and learning process is less rigid and in line with
the andragogy principles and adult learners as it focuses more on the process of
learning rather than the content.
The main aim of adult learning is to be aware of the importance of the 3R model so that
the learners are more aware of their role as parents in their society.

Develop social skills and values with sensitivity.
Each phase in the 3E model can be implemented within an hour of teaching and
learning process by taking into consideration the set induction, development of
the lesson, closure and reflection.
Evaluation is an ongoing process. It is done through activities conducted during
normal lesson.
