Unit 8

Vocabulary
Have you got a spare fridge?

Use this activity after Lesson 8.1, Ex. 3 on page 92.

Use this activity after Lesson 8.2, Ex. 7 on page 95.

New words: tness centre, borrow a bicycle, board

games

New language: Have you got a spare ?/Ive got a

spare .

Procedure

Procedure

Preteach the new language.

Preteach the new language.

Sts work in pairs. Give each pair a set of 24 cards. Tell

them to put the HOTEL cards face down in a pile on
the table. Each student then takes 6 LIKE cards and
holds them so that their partner cannot see them.
Student A begins by choosing a LIKE card from his/her
set, and saying a sentence, for example, I like eating
Japanese food. He/She then picks up a HOTEL card
from the pile. If the HOTEL card matches the LIKE card
(for example, Theres a Japanese restaurant in the
Hotel Royal. You can eat there.), student A puts the
pair down on the table. If the two cards dont match,
student A must keep both cards. Student B then
chooses a LIKE card and says a sentence about it. If
student A is holding a matching HOTEL card, he/she
must give it to student B to make a pair. If not, student
B picks up a card from the HOTEL pile. As before, if a
pair is made, the cards are put down. If not, student
B keeps both cards. The game continues until one
student uses all of his/her cards. Alternatively, you
may wish to set a time limit and see who has the
fewest cards when the time limit is reached.

Sts work in groups of four. Explain that their ats are

not properly furnished because they need certain
items of furniture and have too many of other items.
Say that the objective of the game is to refurnish their
ats so that they end up with one of each item. They
must try to nd the items they need by asking and
answering with the other sts in the group: Have you
got a spare ? Yes, Ive got a spare ./No, I havent.
The game nishes when everyone in the group has
successfully refurnished their at.

Unit 8

Complete the sentences.

Use this activity after Lesson 8.1, Ex. 6 on page 93.

New language: now, tonight, tomorrow
Procedure
Preteach the new language.
Divide the class into pairs. Give each student a copy of
the sentences and each pair a set of cards turned face
down in a pile. Sts take it in turns to pick up a card
and show it to their partner. They write the verb (in the
correct form) into a sentence on the worksheet. Before
they start, remind sts to use the innitive after can, the
-ing form after like and to + innitive after want. Write
some example sentences on the board. When all the
cards have been used, sts check their answers with
you. The student in each pair who has completed the
most sentences correctly is the winner.

Favourite cafs and restaurants

Use this activity after Lesson 8.3, Ex. 11 on page 97.

New language: location
Procedure
Preteach the new language.
Sts work in pairs, then change partners twice. Give
each student a copy of the activity. Begin by telling sts
that they should use the prompts on the page to ask
their partner questions about restaurants and cafs
that they know. For example, name? should prompt sts
to ask Whats the name of the restaurant? Location?
should prompt Where is it? and so on. Sts should
complete the exercise with a partner, each answering
the others questions and talking about a different
restaurant and caf, then change partners and
complete the exercise again with a different partner.
If your sts come from a variety of places, encourage
them to talk about restaurants and cafs in their home
towns, to bring as much variety as possible to the
activity.
