THE NATIONAL DEGREE COLLEGE, BASAVANAGUDI, BENGALURU-4

[AUTONOMOUS]
1

Institutional Description

The National College Basavanagudi, Bangalore was started in 1945 to

commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the National High School. Thus, the year
is significant in the history of Education in the then state of Mysore,
because it gave birth to a college a college with a difference that really
mattered.
The college is value based in the sense that it is not concerned with
churning out youngsters with university degree alone. The serious minded
educationists in this college are inspired by the philosophy of Socrates that
education is not a matter of filling up of a vessel with information, but it is a
matter of enkindling the mind of the youth. Hence, the college is keenly
concerned with the mission of keeping the young minds alive by conducting
various activities, which would enkindle the young mind. It is only natural
that a college that appeals to the moral fiber in an individual and that
believes in giving education for life ought to make a difference to the world
outside.
The College is located in the South Urban District of Bangalore City in older
locality of Basavanagudi, in between famous Lal-bagh and Ramakrishna

Value Based Education:

Genesis: The College was founded on the Gandhian principles of

simplicity stressing moral, spiritual and ethical values. This
became the basis of the value based education in this institution.
The goal of this practice was to ensure that the students of this
college are not just academically sound but have an overall
development to be good citizens with a sense of social
responsibility.

Context & Challenges: The context was the freedom struggle

movement because the college began in 1945, before Independence.
The students, inspired by Dr. H.Narasimhaiah, participated actively
in the movement and hence this value based education became the
foundation of this institution. The challenges that the institution
faced was when the country became independent and made
progress into the world of globalization. It was a difficult task to
keep the students rooted in the principles that this college prided
itself on. However the institution kept this practice in spite of all
the ups and downs that it faced and it is felt that this has become
a part of the quality education imparted in this college. With the
CBCS pattern introduced by the University, it was found that Value
Education is a compulsory component of the course now and our
institution was pleasantly surprised to note that this was not
difficult to put into practice when it has been a practice from the
time this institution began.
The implementation of this practice needs to use different
strategies like lectures given by inspirational speakers, video talks
and seminars.
ii.

Institution of Gold Medals for toppers of all courses:

Genesis: This practice came into being because of a number of

donors who were willing to give the institution an impetus to get
good scores in the examinations, to encourage students to keep up
the name of the college.
Context & Challenges: When the Bangalore University stopped
announcing a rank list, our college continued the practice to
recognize the hard work put in by our students.
The college is able to continue to implement this practice because
of a number of alumni and Governing Council Members who
contribute generously to the institution.
iii.

Class teachers as Local Guardians

3|Page

Genesis: The College even today as it did when it was founded

caters to a number of students who hail from rural areas. It is
necessary to have teachers to act as local guardians to get
themselves acclimatized to the urban spaces. In view of this the
class teachers became important for all students.
This practice is followed very meticulously even today and class
teachers have taken on the roles of mentors to help both rural and
urban students who face many challenges in their student lives.
This practice can certainly be adopted and adapted by other similar
institutions.
The Class teachers of the college are sent to Positive Psychology
Department of NIMHANS- for training to be good mentors.

iv.

HRM and CE with a state-of-art Language Laboratory are

taught to students of all courses without charging any

extra fees.
HRM is a compulsory subject for students of all courses. This
programme focuses on HR related fields like Selection,
Recruitment, Training and Compensation.
Introduction of this paper has enhanced placement percentage of
the College to a large extent.
Communicative English helps students who come from state run
schools with Kannada as the medium of instruction to get an
exposure to the speaking of the English Language. This programme
also teaches the students a number of soft skills, like Presentation
Skills, Interview Skills etc. Students find this programme very
useful when they take up jobs. Training is also given to face
competitive exams which require students to take a compulsory
paper in English. This facility is extended to all students and no
extra fee is charged.
The reason for the introduction of this course was the student
profile that entered the college. The need was felt to help students
to get over their inhibitions about the English Language.

The resources required is a space for a laboratory, with

equipment like set boxes and head phones to make it possible for
students to listen without being distracted.

v.

Compulsory Projects and Seminars at the UG Level.

The autonomous status given to the college allowed it the freedom

to provide students with skills that would otherwise not be possible.
In the final year of the course, every student is expected to do a
project in any one of the core subjects chosen by him/her and
present seminars in the other two core subjects opted by him/her.
This began in order to help students to have a hands-on experience
of the subjects that have been opted by the student. It also
introduces the students to the concept of research which is an
important skill that he/she requires when he/she completes the
course.
Today the students are told about this practice when they join the I
Semester and they get ready to work on a project or present
seminars. They have become very innovative in the ideas that they
put forward for the same.
It has also helped the faculty to update themselves in order to assist
students in the project and seminar work.

viii. Bangalore Science Forum, Bangalore Social Science

Forum & Sahitya Vedike.

The founding of such forums as the Bangalore Science Forum,

Bangalore Social Science Forum & Sahitya Vedike have helped both
the students and the faculty to update their knowledge of specific
subjects.
The Bangalore Science Forum started in 1962 has focused on
popularizing science and makes it accessible for the layman. The
5|Page

lectures are given by experts in their fields and it exposes the

students to the latest in science.
Even today it continues the practice of having important, researchoriented speakers who encourage students to take Science
Education seriously.
The Bangalore Social Science Forum started 1992. Main objective is
to promote interest in Social Studies; to develop humanism, spirit of
inquiry and reform in different fields of society; to create civic
awareness on issues of social, economic, political and cultural
importance.
The latest addition to these various forums is the Sahitya Vedike
which gives students an introduction to the latest in the world of
literary criticism.
All of these forums are informative and useful to the students as
well as the faculty. In spite of various difficulties and challenges,
these forums continue their programmes and many students and
faculty participate even today.
