Sesame Street comes to Yongsan

By Pvt. Choe Yong-joon

USAG-Yongsan Public Affairs

YONGSAN GARRISON — With Elmo toys in hand,

more than 1,000 kids wildly cheered the stars of the
Sesame Street USO Experience for Military Families at
the Collier Field House Feb. 10 in a live performance
by Muppets Elmo, Cookie Monster, Grover, Zoe and
Rosita.
The show is part of a partnership with the United
Service Organizations to bring the Sesame Street show
to 13 U.S. military installations in Asia.
“It is the first family show for military families ever in
Korea,” USO manager Tom Zaizar said. “It’s a quality
performance with the lessons and messages being family
oriented. Since their parents grew up on it, it’s a long-
time tradition and very notable that Elmo, of course, is
famous worldwide with its friendly, familiar face.”
He added that the show also intended to bring a little
bit of home to give appreciation to all military families
who often sacrifice normal family life to service their
country.
According to the USO website, the show was an
extension of Sesame Workshop’s Talk, Listen, Connect
military outreach initiative launched in 2006.
The tour provides support and offers resources for
military families with young children experiencing
the effects of deployment, multiple deployments, and
a parent’s return home that has changed the family’s
dynamic due to a combat-related injury.

Pro football player visits Yongsan

I have had many great experiences, but the most memo-

rable one happen on my first tour to Korea in 1994. A
friend and I, both young PFCs at the time, came down to
Seoul from Camp Casey using Korean public transporta-
tion. It was maybe the third or forth time on the subway
for me. We decided to visit the Olympic Stadium just
to say we were there. We got a little lost and a young
Korean guy, maybe a few years older than us, asked if
we need help. Not only did he show us the stadium, he
showed us around all day. I am not sure what he had
planned for the day but it seemed as if he dropped ev-
erything to show us around Seoul.

Senior KATUSA finds home away from home at Camp Humphreys

HUMPHREYS GARRISON — Reflecting

on his time as a Korean Augmentation to
the U.S. Army Soldier, Sgt. Hwang, Kyujin,
chief of the Republic of Korea Army staff
office of Headquarters and Headquarters
Company, 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade,
feels he has benefited exponentially from
his time working alongside American
Soldiers.
“I didn’t really get a chance to meet a lot
of Americans before I joined the Army,” said
Hwang, “but being a KATUSA has allowed
me to interact with them often, helping me
to become more proficient in English. When
I first joined, it was difficult making friends
with Americans because of the language
barrier, but most U.S. Soldiers are really
funny and easy to get along with, which
made the transition much easier.”
For Hwang, conversations with
Americans, although much different than
his usual interactions with Korean Nationals,
proved to be fulfilling. “Most Koreans are
more conservative, but my personality is
free like most Americans, making it easier to
adjust. I have made many American friends
while stationed here at Camp Humphreys
and will never forget the good times we
shared together,” he said.
