Never tire of praying for priests, especially now when it seems that all the
forces of evil have been loosed upon the world, attacking particularly the
sacred ministers of the Lord. Pray that they remain faithful, that they be
holy, that they be nothing more (and nothing less) than what they should
be: Alter Christus. Please pray for the Missionary Servants of the Poor of
the Third World priests and deacons!

Economic Crisis, Competition of Love
The Christian is moved to
contribute to creating just
societies, where all receive what
is necessary to live according to
the dignity proper to the human
person and where justice is
enlivened by love.
(Benedict XVI,
Message for Lent 2010)

Dear Friends,
Laudetur Iesus Christus!
I come to you from the distant
Peru-vian Andes to thank each of
you for the love and prayers you
have showered on me on the 50th
anniversary of my ordination to the
priesthood, which we celebrated
on December 23rd. I would like to
respond to each of you personally
but you will understand that this is
impossible. I do pray daily for those
who have followed me these many
years and I also remember those
dear friends and benefactors who
have died.
You were all with me that day
in a special way. I offered you and
your intentions and worries on the
paten with the Host which daily renews me, lling me with great joy
and strength to continue working
for the most poor. On December
25th, we priests can celebrate three
holy Masses. The second one I cel-

ebrated for you as a sign of gratitude for the love with which you
have always supported me.
Meanwhile, Lent is upon us a
time in the liturgical year in which
the Church invites us to a sincere
review of our lives in light of the
Gospel teachings. The mass media
is tireless in reporting the sad news
about the economic crisis and, even
worse, about murders, abortions,
divorces, broken families, etc. All
this news could discourage us, but
we, raising our eyes to heaven, discover the face of God the Father,
always faithful, Who never abandons those who suffer. In the same
way that the numberless trees of the

he has even gotten his

nieces and nephews to
commit to this noble
cause.

the crisis is most felt,

knowing us personally or even contacting
us for more information, left us her humble
house in her will so that
the sale of it might satisfy the hunger of our
children.

circumstances. How many of these
offenses I could tell of! For example,
a very rich Catholic woman from
Lima used to send us her daughters
used dresses and high heel shoes.
I asked her not to bring this sort of
thing anymore because the poor are
our brothers and should be assisted
with dignity. A very wealthy old
Italian woman had begun to send
us generous donations for our children, saying, I am old, my children
are well off, so now I would like to

help your children a little more.

But one of her daughters, a leader
in her parish and owner of buildings, prevented her from helping
in this generous way, saying, Help
them, but only send them 100
every once in a while.
Not everyone who says to me,
Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven (Mt 7:21).
I wish all of you a Holy Lent, as
a competition of love!

Part Two:
Means of Advancing in Perfection
Be perfect, like your Father in
heaven is perfect. (Mt 5:48)
The principal obstacle to advancing in perfection is in the lukewarmness of the soul about whose
characteristics and remedies we
have spoken in a previous article. If
it is true that it is difcult for a lukewarm person to regain his previous
fervor, the Lord says, What is impossible with men is possible with
God (Lk 18:27). He who prays to
the Lord and uses adequate means
soon attains what he desires. Saint
Alphonsus Liguori, in the eighth
chapter of his book, The Practice of
the Love of Jesus Christ, suggests
ve ways of conquering lukewarmness and reaching perfection: desiring perfection, the rm resolution
of reaching it, meditation, frequent
communion, and prayer.
In the rst place is desire for perfection. Saint Alphonsus says that
the desire for holiness gives us the
wings that make us y above the
earth. It gives us strength and allows
us to walk the path of holiness. Only
he who truly desires to reach perfection goes continually forward. Those
who dont desire this will backslide.
Saint Teresa of Jesus said that it
helps to have lofty thoughts that impel us to also do the works (The Way
of Perfection, Ch. 5). Another place

Fr. Pierlippo Giovanetti, msp (Italian)

she says, The devil does much

harm, so that those who pray dont
progress, making them misunderstand humility, making them think
it prideful to have great desires and
to want to imitate the Saints (Autobiography, Ch. 13). And to discourage us, he makes us think on our
past sins. One must realize that not
even the sins weve committed can
prevent us from reaching sanctity
if we really want it. In everything
God works for good with those
who love Him (Rm 8:28), so that
even sins can help, because the sinner, being aware of them, becomes
more humble.
The second way of reaching perfection is resolution: the rm decision of giving oneself completely to
God. If the desire for perfection is

Fr. Pierlippo Giovanetti, msp, celebrating Holy Mass in a village in the Andes
of Cuzco
not united with this rm resolution
of reaching it, it will never be anything but a vain desire. The lazy are
full of good intentions but never resolve to take the steps to carry them
out. For this reason we say, The
road to hell is paved with good intentions. On the contrary, the soul
on this path . . . begins to walk with
determination . . . and has covered a
great deal of the way (Saint Teresa
of Jesus, Autobiography, Ch. 11).
The third way of reaching perfection is meditation. He who
doesnt meditate on the eternal
truths will only be able to live a
Christian life through an extraordinary grace of God. The truths
of the faith are only seen with the
eyes of the soul and only when the

soul meditates on them. So he who

doesnt meditate doesnt see them,
walks in darkness, and becomes
attached to earthly things, scorning eternal ones. Holy thoughts are
born of meditation, they increase
the desire for perfection and pour
into the heart rm intentions of
surrendering oneself completely to
God. It is very useful to meditate on
the Four Last Things (Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell), and on the
life of the Redeemer as The Imitation of Christ reminds us, May
our greatest preoccupation be to
meditate on the life of Jesus. His
teaching surpasses all those of the
Saints (Book 1, Ch. 1, 1).
The fourth means of reaching
holiness and preserving friendship

with God is by frequent communion. The Eucharist not only frees us

from daily faults, even from simple
imperfections or venial sins, but it
also preserves us from mortal sin. It
inclines the soul to virtue and infuses it with a great ability to practice
it. Clearly, for Holy Communion to
produce in the soul these effects,
the attitude with which a person approaches the Eucharistic Banquet is
very important. One must dedicate
a good amount of time to thanksgiving since the time after Communion is time to make a fortune
and accumulate a treasure of graces
for Heaven (Saint John of Avila).
Finally, on this road to perfection it is necessary to pray in a personal and intimate dialogue with
God. Because the help of grace is

indispensible on one hand, but on

the other hand God only grants it to
those who ask for it. The Lord . . .
bestows His riches upon all who
call upon Him (Rm 10:12). As
temptations and dangers in this life
are never ending, our prayer must
be continuous. Our Lord has said
to, always pray and not lose heart
(Lk 18:1). When we pray to God, let
us not forget to commend ourselves
to Mary also who is the dispenser
of all graces. God it is, says Saint
Bernard, Who gives grace, but He
gives it by the hand of Mary. Let us
seek grace, but let us seek it through
Mary. If Mary prays for us, we
may be sure of being heard because
her prayers are always pleasing to
God and are never neglected.

OREMUS
Prayer to Our Lady of Inca Perka,
Mother of Jesus and Mother of the Poor
(Part One)
Mary, Mother of Jesus, Mother of all nations and Mother
of the poor: I have climbed to this peak of Inca Perka, witness
to bloody battles between the strong Chancas and the ancient
Incas for the control of this High Cordillera, to raise to you
my imploring gaze. Listen to my reverent prayer which rises
to heaven like the condors that dance about you in their silent
ight.
After so many years of humble service on these heights of
Apurimac, where numberless Indians dont yet know the fruits
of the Redemption of your Son and live an inhuman existence,
I cant nd the words to form the prayer that presses on my
soul to express to you the sentiments of my missionary heart.
I feel in the deepest part of my being my weakness and
nothingness. I am aware of my radical inability to free the
hearts hardened in evil and turn them towards good. So I lift
the chalice with the Blood of your son, Jesus, to you in which
I want to drown the sufferings of all the Indians whom from
this old fortress you see and support with a mothers love.
You know, Mother, how these Indians of the Cordillera are
exploited. You know the local authorities and the bosses who
rob the poor of their cows, sheep and lambs and who can only
cry because if they denounce the abuses, they will end up in
jail. You have seen in the darkness of the night, who killed the
young district attorney, throwing his body in the river, because
he defended the Indians.

I Know Whom I Have Believed

(2Tm 1:12)

Fr. Ral Gonzles, msp (Peruvian)

I want to share with you about

my life and especially about my vocation. I was born in Lima. Yes! I
am from the land of Saint Rose of
Lima and Saint Martin de Porres,
although my father is from Callao
and my mother from Cuzco. After
being ordained to the diaconate this
past December 12th, I am ministering at the City of Boys in Andahuaylillas, Cuzco.
First, how was my vocation to
the priesthood born? I can answer
this question in the same words that
Pope John Paul II used in his book,
Gift and Mystery, God knows my
priestly vocation better than any-

one, and every priestly vocation

is a great mystery, it is a gift that
innitely surpasses man. . . Sincerely, I feel like that: innitely
surpassed by this beautiful gift that
the Lord has given me with His call
since, as you know, the responsibility of a priest especially nowadays
is very great and I tremble like Saint
Paul (cf. 1Cor 2:3) when I think of
it. However, the words of that same
Apostle to the Gentiles helped me to
overcome my fears, I know Whom
I have believed (2Tm 1:12).
Now how was I introduced to
the Movement of the Missionary
Servants of the Poor of the Third
World? I met them through a good
friend of my mother. She began
to attend the spiritual retreats that
Fr. Giovanni and the Movement
organized periodically in Lima.
My mother always brought home
pamphlets and newsletters that
contained testimonies of young
missionaries and many photos of
children that lived in precarious circumstances in the mountains of the
Andes and also messages from Fr.
Giovanni exhorting young people
to be courageous and determined in
following Christ.
Its curious that until then my
life had been normal to the point
that I was about to realize my dream
of being a sports writer. However, I

11

Fr. Ral Gonzles, msp, giving Holy Communion to the boys of the Blessed
Francisco and Jacinta Marto School of the Missionary Servants of the Poor
of the Third World.
wasnt at peace. Every time I read
one of those testimonies or saw a
photo of those children that lived
in inhuman conditions in the mountains or on the outskirts of Cuzco
itself, my heart was moved. I felt I
needed to do something for them.
I felt as if a voice was calling me
to leave everything, my family, my
friends, my profession, my comfort,
my city, my personal plans, etc. In
short, I felt the call of Christ in the
depths of my heart, but it was very
difcult to leave everything. It took
a lot to take this decisive step.
Finally, I remember praying a
daily ejaculation that a priest friend
in Lima taught me: Speak, Lord:
what do you want of me? I must
admit that my parents helped me

12

much during this period of discernment. I prayed a daily rosary with

them and the Divine Mercy chaplet.
Without a doubt the example and
Christian witness that I have received from my parents was decisive
in conrming me in my vocation.
So it was that, impelled by the
Lord, I nally took the step. I wrote
to the superior of the community in
Cuzco, telling him about my doubts
and my desire to serve Christ in the
poor. I was accepted. So I went to
Cuzco and began my missionary
life there. I received many blessings and gifts from the Lord during
that time.
In daily contact with the children, I was discovering slowly the
suffering face of Christ, since many

of them came from homes damaged

by alcohol and family violence or
were simply children that had been
abandoned by their own parents.
Many times I have cried, remembering some particular testimony of
one of our boys, and have thanked
God for the privilege Hes given
me of being able to serve Him and
console Him in them each day as a
Servant of the Poor. In this continuous service to the smallest I have
understood the words of Our Lord
Who says, What you have done to
the least of my brothers, you did to
Me (Mt 25:40). I have always felt
that Christ used these dear boys to
call me to His service and to tell me
to leave all for Him.

Now I am working in the City

of Boys with the dream and desire
of serving Christ in these children,
in the poorest, a dream and desire
that, thanks to God, has remained
as strong as it was at the beginning
of my missionary experience.
I ask the Lord for the gift of
remaining faithful in all I have
learned and found worthy in these
years in seminary: prayer, love for
the Eucharist, and community life.
And I beg you who read these lines
to pray for me so that I may remain
faithful to the vocation Christ has
called me to and that He may turn
me into an instrument of His love
and a Servant of the most poor and
needy. Holy Mary, Mother of the
Poor, pray for us.

Chiara Luce (1971 - 1990)

Blessed Chiara Badano, or Chiara
Luce (Light), a name given to her by
the founder of the Focolare Movement,
Chiara Lubich, was born at the end
of 1989 in Sassello, Luguria, Italy on
October 29, 1971. From childhood she
displayed a deep love of God.
She joined the Focolare Movement
at the age of nine. She was a generous,
happy, sports-loving girl who enjoyed life. She liked to sing and dance.
At sixteen she dreamed of becoming a stewardess but realized that God
was calling her to something more and she responded generously, putting
aside her plans to embrace a new dream, that of consecrating herself to the
Lord. But the ways of the Lord are not our ways.
One day, while playing tennis, she experienced strong pain in her back.
The doctors at the hospital diagnosed a serious and painful tumor. Thus
began a two year Calvary for Chiara, which she endured with the joy and
generosity that were always hers. She was determined to suffer it all for
Jesus. The consecration that the Lord asked of her was a consecration to
suffering to give witness to the whole world that suffering may not only be
endured but also embraced, thereby uniting oneself to the Cross of Jesus.
That which could have been common holiness, hidden, like the many saints
whose names we dont even know, is transformed into a heroic holiness.
Each year on October 29th the Church celebrates an example of youthful and cheerful holiness, a Light to Christians so that they may cheerfully embrace their daily crosses knowing that, as Saint Jos Mara Escriv
said, God wants us happy, but Christian happiness frequently has its roots
in the Cross.
The sufferings of the children we shelter in our centers are sometimes
physical sufferings, as in the case of the children helped by our Sisters
in the Saint Raphael room of our Saint Teresa of Jesus Home, but more
frequently it is tremendous suffering caused by their abandonment and
the violence theyve suffered. This can plant in their hearts a rancor and
resentment towards others, towards adults in general, and even towards
their own parents. The life of Chiara, beatied by Benedict XVI, may be
also for them that Light that they so need to transform each suffering into
a gesture of love towards God and their neighbor.

Chronicle of the Movement

From Our Houses . . .

Center in Budapest, Hungary

Fr. Giovanni received permission from the Archbishop of Budapest, His Eminence Peter Cardinal
Erdo, during his last visit to our
Center to have the Most Holy Eucharist reserved permanently in our
chapel. This good news from our
center in Budapest makes us happy
because it will strengthen our mission among the poor in that city.
Previously we had to take the kids
to the parish church if we wanted
to spend time with Jesus in the
Blessed Sacrament. The chapel in

the Center was used for praying the

rosary and catechism. We are very
grateful for this permission which
will help us all to live in our Center
in the Presence of Jesus. Our Center
has also been enlarged with a new
room to use for sports programs for
the children of the neighborhood.
During his stay, Father Giovanni
met His Eminence Msgr. Janos
Szekely, delegate to the gypsies in
Hungary. During a Mass celebrated
in our Center, Fr. Giovanni received
the rst annual vows, according to
the statutes of the Movement, of a

Father Agustin Delouvroy, msp,
also visited our Center to preach two
spiritual retreats for the young people and to present the mission and
charism of the Movement to various
schools and a university group.

was invited by Father Giovanni
Salerno to bless the new wing of
our Major Seminary, along with
the Rev. Don Carlos, pastor of
Mazarambroz, the other neighbor-

Sunday our seminarians go to both

serve at the altar. The blessing of the
new wing of the Seminary brings to
an end the expansion of our house of

Father Ral Gonzles receiving Holy Orders to the Diaconate through the laying
on of hands of Msgr. Juan Antonio Ugarte, Archbishop of Cuzco
the boys of our school who aspire
to the priestly and missionary life.
The Rector, Father Vincent Minnelli, msp, and his assistant, Father
Alois Hllwerth, msp, will receive
seven new candidates this March to
experience a week of community
life which will allow them to discern a priestly vocation. There will
then be about twenty boys studying
in our minor seminary.
For the fourth year in a row
the minor seminarians put on a
Christmas play titled And He Dwelt
Among Us. It is a play about the
glad preparation for Christmas
with some comedy and reection in

which contemporary characters and

traditional Cuzqueos are brought
from their very supercial and
sinful life to the feet of the newborn Baby Jesus. Each year Father
Vincent prepares three performances for the city of Cuzco, the last one
of which is performed at the municipal theater with about six hundred
people attending.

On the solemnity of the Virgin

of Guadalupe, in the chapel of the
City of Boys, our dear Brother Ral
Gonzles, msp, was ordained to the
diaconate by Msgr. Juan Antonio

One of the important duties of the

Director, Father Agustin Delouvroy, is to make sure that we maintain contact with the families who
have given their boys to us. Thanks
to the help of the missionary families who visit the families of our
boys, we are able to help them materially and spiritually. Frequently,
it is only to maintain a simple and
humble contact so
that their situation
doesnt get worse.
We are unable to
carry out great social works in competition with the
municipal services
of Cuzco, but there
is no doubt that the
humble presence
of the missionary
Church among the
poor gives great

Ugarte, Archbishop of Cuzco. The

Mass was sung by our San Tarcisio
choir, directed by Pascal Dousse,
msp, of the Fraternity of the Missionary Families. The parents and
family of Brother Ral came from
Lima for the ordination. The boys
from our Francisco and Jacinta Marto school also attended. Father Ral
will continue to be responsible for

the Saint Aloysius Gonzaga group

of boys, the youngest of those who
live with us.
A little before Christmas, we
took in two new boys, Cristo Frank
(6) who comes from Quillabamba
and Luis Miguel (10) who comes
from Cusibamba where our Sisters
have a permanent mission. This year
our San Tarcisio home houses forty
abandoned or orphaned boys divided into groups according to age and
all guided by a Father or Brother.

We also renewed our commitment this year to send priests and

brothers to the distant village of
the High Cordillera to celebrate the
solemnity of Christmas. We sent
out three teams: Fr. Pierlippo and
Brother Erick (a Mexican volunteer)
went to Yarquacuncca and San Juan
de Quihuares; Father Louis Marie
and Father Jos went to Pirque and
Paprs; and Father Alois and Brother Johann (an Austrian volunteer)

and two minor seminarians went to

Parocochan.
If it hadnt been for these itinerant missionaries, these pueblos
would not have been able to participate in Mass and celebrate Christ-

mas in a Christian way. Each missionary team spent a week in the

assigned pueblos from which they
also visited neighboring villages to
teach catechism, bless houses, hear
confessions, pray the rosary and
distribute rosaries
and, time allowing,
the
presentation
of a living Nativity and a Christmas
performance with
the children of the
pueblo, all so that
these people could
receive the news
of what the Church
celebrates: the birth
of the Savior. Other
priests went to the

From The World

There are 800 million illiterate people in the world,
including more than 70 million children
On September 8, 2011, the day we celebrate the International Day
of Literacy, we want to remind society in general and governments
and their related educational institutions in particular, that there are
about 800 million illiterate people in the world of which more than
70 million are children according to a report issued by UNESCO in
2010. Achieving universal literacy requires more effort and political will, because it is not only a matter of assuring an education for
everyone, but also of giving them a tool to ght poverty and guarantee inclusion and social mobility, the eradication of child labor and
the exploitation of children.

The Pope remembers the singular contribution

of all religious men and women, contemplative and
active, to the mission of the Church and its
chief role in evangelization:
Due to the singular contribution of all the religious men and women,
contemplative and active, to the mission of the Church and their role
as chief evangelizers through prayer and supplication, education,
health assistance, charity and other apostolates, their charisms will
continue strengthening the ecclesial community overall and enriching all of society. The Holy Father Benedict XVI emphasized this
in a talk to a group of Latin Rite bishops from India who were received in audience on June 17 for their ad limina visit.

Our Friends Write To Us

Let your dreams devour your life,
so that your life doesnt devour your dreams.

(Antoine de Saint-Exupry)

Two French Friends, on a trip

to the Temple of the Sun,
write to us:
Our goal on May 9, 2011, was
to discover that beautiful country
of Peru, land of dreams and also
where the work of the Missionary
Servants of the Poor of the Third
World is carried out. We had met
them and helped them through the
Abbey of Notre-Dame de Fontgombault.
We stayed ten days, mostly in
Cuzco, and dedicated an entire day
to visiting the works, which up to
then we had known only through
their newsletter published by the
abbey. A day was too short to be
able to see and learn everything,
notwithstanding the warm welcome of the French families who
were put at our disposal so that we
could see as much as possible.
That morning we were met
by Philippe Bourdeau (one of
the husbands of the missionary
families) who took us to the City
of Boys in Andahuaylillas to see
the Blessed Francisco and Jacinta
Marto school and professional

30

workshops which serve about 500

boys. It was the day on which report cards were distributed in the
presence of the boys parents. This
ended with a Mass celebrated by
Father Urs Zanoni who impressed
us with his beautiful and simple
liturgy and the deep recollection
of the boys surrounded by their
parents who came from neighboring villages or the outskirts of
Cuzco.
At noon we returned to Cuzco
to the Saint Maria Goretti Girls
School to lunch with the students
and appreciated the serene atmosphere and liveliness of the girls.
Our day ended with a visit
to the Mother House of the missionary sisters which houses the
Saint Teresa of Jesus Home. This
was very moving, visiting the
rooms of the little sick ones which
Father Salerno considers the
second tabernacle of the house
after the tabernacle in the church.
These handicapped children, most
of whom are bedridden and many
abandoned by their parents, vividly represent the Suffering Christ.

Surrounded by young, smiling religious who radiate a great faith,

these children nd an atmosphere
of peace and love and dignity
which we would like to nd in our
hospitals in France, which are so
often dehumanizing.
Another moving moment was
on our last Sunday in Cuzco, on
the Feast of the Ascension, when
we requested a taxi from a young
employee of the Llipimpac Inn
where we were staying so we
could go to Mass at the Mother
House. When we asked her if she

knew the work of the Servants

she answered us excitedly that
she had spent 18 years there! She
said that she was very grateful to
its benefactors and to the missionary families for contributing to a
mission that had saved her from a
very difcult situation.
What a meaningful sign in this
crowded city of Cuzco! And what
a witness for those who might still
doubt the importance of this most
decidedly Catholic work dedicated to the service of the most
poor!
