Moorestown-based builder charged

with theft in local project
The following information was
provided by the Burlington County Prosecutors Office:
Burlington County Prosecutor
Robert D. Bernardi and Acting
Moorestown Police Director Lt.
Lee R. Lieber announced that a
Moorestown-based builder of custom homes was charged with
theft for failing to share profits
with an investor who helped finance a residential construction
project in Moorestown.
A 46-year-old male of Auburn
Court in Mount Laurel was
charged with one count of theft
by failure to make required disposition. He was taken into custody
Aug. 15 at his residence and
placed in the Burlington County
Jail on $100,000 bail with 10 percent admissible.
According to the investigation,
he offered an acquaintance the
opportunity to invest in a residential construction project on Borton Landing Road in Moorestown.
The investor was familiar with
him because the suspect had built
his home in 2008. He provided the
suspect with a total of $192,867 for
the investment project. According to the agreement signed by
both sides, the investor and the
suspect were to equally split the

profit once the house sold and all

construction and other costs were
deducted from the total.
The investigation revealed that
the suspect constructed a home
on the lot, and closing on the property was held in May 2013. He was
present and indicated in a notarized and signed statement that
no liens or encumbrances existed
on the property. The title agency
that conducted the closing failed
to find the memorandum of understanding between the suspect
and the investor, which had been
filed with the Burlington County
Clerks Office in March 2009.
The investor had not been monitoring the property and was unaware that a house had been built
until he drove by in the spring of
2014. After several unsuccessful
attempts to receive payment from
the suspect, the investor approached law enforcement and
the investigation began.
The suspect did business as

Main Street in Moorestown. The
case was investigated by detectives from the Moorestown Police
Department and the Burlington
County Prosecutors Office Financial Crimes Unit.

Tennis, academics and life-long skills

Resident Bill Seward runs non-profit Moorestown Youth Tennis
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
In Moorestown, a resident is offering tennis instruction to children that provides not only tennis
instruction, but mentoring for
stronger and smarter students
and, eventually, professionals.
And ability to pay isnt a factor.
Resident Bill Seward started a
non-profit youth tennis program
here in his hometown. Called

Moorestown Youth Tennis, the

program is designed to offer tennis and all of its benefits to children regardless of ability to pay.
Sewards goal is to provide tennis,
academic and life-long skills to
the youth of Moorestown.
The goal of the program is to
bring tennis to the youth in the
area and provide them with highquality tennis instruction, regardless of their ability to pay or
regardless of the resources people have, Seward said.
Moorestown Youth Tennis was
started by Seward, who is a highlevel tennis player and coach,
having played on Moorestown
boys all-group and being a party
of the public school state championship team in 1981 under Coach
Bill Kingston. By the end of his
senior year, he was the teams No.
1 singles player with a record of
26-1. He attended Division-I Furman University in South Caroli-

na on a tennis scholarship, winning the Southern Conference

singles and doubles in 1984. For
the last 25 years, Seward has
owned and operated a number of
tennis facilities on the east coast,
including 16 years directing Avalon Tennis Camps.
With my broad background, I
want to be able to help kids and
use tennis to do that. If we give
them a high level of instruction,
there is a possibility they could
play on their high school team, in
tournaments or in college, which
are positive aspects of someones
life, Seward said.
Moorestown Youth Tennis offers a combination of tennis instruction and play for all students. The program is offered for
children from 5 to 13, split into
two groups from children ages 5
to 7 and 8 to 13. All equipment is

Back to school signifies a new beginning, maybe even more so for many

not for looking back.
Here at The Sun, back to school signifies the start of a busier time. In the

letter to the editor

Its up to the people to keep
recyclables in right containers
A recent letter to the editor regarding
the lack of recycling containers compelled
me to write a response in support of Mr.
Khanlians efforts.
But a little history first.
As a former regulator from the NJDEP,
the states struggle to increase recycling in
New Jersey is an ongoing effort. The
Mandatory Source Separation and Recycling Act, first signed into law in 1987, requires all citizens of New Jersey to recycle.
The act also requires townships such as
Moorestown to make arrangements to collect recyclables from residences. It does
not, however, require the township to collect recyclables from commercial establishments.
Each commercial establishment must by
law make its own arrangements for the col-

lection of recyclables from their property.

The township of Moorestown does not
have the legal requirement to provide recycling containers on Main Street or on township fields.
So what is the alternative?
First of all, businesses that sell goods in
recyclable containers must include a receptacle to collect empty recyclable containers. You see great examples of these at
WAWA and CVS. When you are frequenting the many retail establishments in our
community, see how many have made the
same effort to collect recyclables despite
selling products in recyclable containers.
You see poor examples of this at
Moorestown Mall and other stores; often
theres no container for recyclables.
I challenge you to go one step further.
Take a peek inside the recycling containers
at WAWA, CVS or anywhere else you find a
recycling container and what will you find?
Invariably, you will find someone has

placed trash in the container meant solely

for recyclables. And unbelievably, in spite
of the wonderful efforts of WAWA and
CVS to encourage and make it easy for people to recycle, you will also find someone
has thrown a recyclable into the trash despite the adjacent recycling container.
And what is the end result? If a container for recyclables is contaminated with
trash, the entire contents, recyclables included, are thrown in the trash. Even bottle
caps should be removed and disposed before recycling the bottle. It's just not cost effective for a business to separate trash
from the recyclables.
And, believe it or not, not every container or item bearing a recycling symbol
means that it is recyclable in Burlington
County. Only specific items are recyclable.
Just because an item bears a recycling
symbol doesnt mean that Burlington

County has a market for that recyclable. Filling a recycling container with items that the county
cannot recycle contaminates the
entire container.
For guidance, see Burlington
County Recycling Offices webpage at: www.co.burlington.nj.us/

So whats the answer to the
Main Street and sports fields
lacking recycling containers?
Certainly adding recyclable
containers to existing trash receptacles would help but only if
we the people take the time to
consciously use them and to use
them properly.

Moorestown residents Margo Riggins, age 1, and her mother Daniela

recently took some time to check out the books and toys offered by
the Moorestown Library. Margo especially enjoyed the librarys train
set, and she was happy to show them off again and again to her
mom.

provided, including balls and racquets.

Sessions consist of 30 minutes
of technique instruction followed
by 30 minutes of structured play.
Kids start playing right away so
they can experience all the game
has to offer. Moorestown Youth
Tennis also offers bi-weekly video
tennis tips to keep players engaged and constantly learning.
The ages 5 to 7 session offers instruction Tuesdays from 5:30 p.m.
to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays from
noon to 1 p.m. The ages 8 to 13 session offer instruction Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
and Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 2
p.m.
Sessions start on Sept. 7 and
Sept. 9 and run for eight weeks.
For the eight-week session, it is
$199 for September through October. However, as Moorestown
Youth Tennis is a non-profit, it of-

fers financial assistance and

scholarships to children on asneeded basis.
Money can be a challenge a lot
of the time, and I want to offer
tennis to anyone interested and
willing to gain the benefits from
tennis, Seward said.
Seward feels tennis can be used
as a teaching tool for children,
benefiting them both physically
and mentally. He wants to use
those two benefits to help build
strong kids and eventually adults.
Some of the benefits Seward
said students can gain from tennis can go toward future careers.
They include problem solving,
flexibility, hard work, self-motivating and passion. You need to
be able to think strategically on
how to defeat your opponent and
be flexible in those situations.
Also, tennis players try to be the
best, work by themselves often
and are passionate about what
they do.
I use those as the benefits. If
we teach someone, we work with
them on their game as well as

mentor and teach them those

strengths, Seward said.
Seward would like to offer
more than just tennis instruction,
but academic instruction as well
for a full afternoon of tennis and
mentoring. From when school
finishes to dinnertime, Seward
would like to provide children
with both so they can reap the full
benefits both in tennis and in academics to carry on in their future.
Tennis is a game you can play
for the rest of your life, socially or
competitively. It is unique to tennis versus team sports. And it is
great for aging adults; tennis and
table tennis is one of the best
sports to work your brain and
keep yourself sharp, Seward
said.
Moorestown Youth Tennis is a
part of the non-profit National
Tennis and Learning of New Jersey, which is a branch of the United States Tennis Association.

out the website at moorestownyouthtennis.com or call Seward at

18 THE MOORESTOWN SUN AUG. 26SEPT. 1, 2015

Goal is to raise $14,000

GOAL
Continued from page 1
It is an opportunity for families, teenagers and kids to come
out and play. It is just a great way
for us to give people a chance to
come together and experience
something different that we have
to offer, manager of special
events Samantha Salazar said.
Perkins Center decided it would
have a wiffle ball tournament
three years ago when it was looking for a way to bring people to the
center and attract those who normally wouldnt come. They wanted something the community
could really get involved in and
have a good time with, and wiffle
ball seemed like the perfect fit.
The tournament has a two-season set up, the first from 9 a.m. to
noon and the second from noon to
3 p.m. After that will be the playoffs, starting at 3 p.m. and ending

team slots are available for the
tournament, and teams can be coed and of any age. First-, secondand third-place winners will receive hand-made trophies by
Perkins Centers Pottery Studio
manager Paul Serena. As of Tuesday, Aug. 18, there were eight
spots left. Sign ups can be done
online at perkinscenter.org.
For this year, Perkins Center
wanted to take the wiffle ball
event to another level. Instead of
just having a tournament, it is
adding fun activities and contests
to entertain visitors during and
after the games, hence adding the
word Fest.
It started as just a wiffle ball
tournament then last year, people hung around until after dark
and they wound up playing cornhole and just hanging out and having a good time. So we just said,
lets just kind of incorporate that
into what weve got here, and
made it a part of our event, event
chair Paul Canton said.
This year, we are kind of taking it up a little notch, offering a
few more things. We really want
to stress that it is a very familyfriendly event, Salazar said.
New this year will be a BBQ
and cornhole contest. Perkins
Center invites people who are interested in being a part of the
BBQ contest to bring their grills
or smokers to the lawn, cook as
long as theyd like that day, and
show their stuff. After the wiffle

ball tournament, there will be the

tasting of BBQ food and a cornhole contest. Sign-up forms can
be found at the Perkins Center
website, perkinsarts.org. Both
contests will offer a cash prize.
This year will also include a
Brazilian BBQ food truck, offering a variety of foods; the local
high school band playing live
music; childrens activities such
as art projects and toss games;
and local businesses providing
food for the event.
It is all day; even if you dont
have a team, there are still things
for you to do. Come hang out and
get to know the space, Salazar
said.
The purpose of the Wiffle Ball
Cup & Fest is not only to create a
fun community-wide event, but
also to help people get to know
more about Perkins Center and
all it has to offer.
People should come out because it is a fun and relaxing day,
and you know youre giving back
to a small organization in town,
Salazar said.
Last year, about 200 people
came to the Wiffle Ball Cup and
helped the Perkins Center raise
$12,000. This year, Canton and
Salazar hope more people come
and they can raise more money
for Perkins Center, with a goal of
$14,000.
All of the money raised goes
back to the Perkins Center. The
fall session starts on Sept. 21 and
classes are open for registration.

The department is opening its

event will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
on Sept. 12 and is free and open to
the public.
Community Partner Organizations include the Friends Enrichment Program, Sean Fischel Connect, The Perfect Game, Live
Civilly, MooreKids, Monica Buckley

munity members to see the wide

variety of programs and activities that are offered to all community members.
This event, the Triple "A" of
Moorestown athletics, arts and

youth and adults alike to the multitude of activities and opportunities available.
Moorestown is a unique community with a wide variety of
services available, and we want to
showcase it all.
The event will be held on the
third floor of the Recreation Center. Each organization will distribute flyers, brochures and/or
materials about its programs.
Live Civilly will be collecting nonperishable food items and showcasing programs and services
available to the community. The
Perfect Game will be hosting a
"gently used" sports equipment
swap at which young people look-

ing for sports equipment may

take items and those people looking to donate gently used items
can drop them off.
Sean Fischel Connect will have
information about its annual run,
and the many other partners will
showcase their services. During
the open house event, the Recreation Street Gym will host hourly
events like kickball and threepoint contests, and tours of the
new Recreation commercial
kitchen will be offered.
Recreation chef-in-residence
Katie Sklarow will be showcasing
the opportunities within the
kitchen, and samples of class productions will be available to the
public.
