0 Data Analysis and Interpretation

It is necessary here to clarify what is meant by the term improve. The word improve
based on The Free Dictionary (2009) mean to raise to a more desirable or more excellent
quality or a condition, make better or to increase the productivity or a value of (land or
property). Meanwhile based on the Business Dictionary (2015), improve is an act of
enhancing or making better in terms of quality, value or usefulness. This can be by making
ideas, objects or processes more desirable by adding or removing components. The term
can also be applied to people as well, via methods such as perfomance reviews which are
meant to try and improve an employee in some manner. This definition can vary depending
on the situations it is used however the following definition is useful because the two
definitions mentioned before commented on the same concept of improve which were to
make better. From these definitions, the researcher can deduce that the term improve is
define as the participants are doing better after the intervention, may it be in terms of
answering the test after the intervention implemented or being able to sing the songs with
less mistake than before.
The introductory section provides a brief overview of the definition of the term
improve. It then goes on to the data analysis and interpretations of each participant.
Regarding the participants, the analysis and interpretations would begin with Umar, an active
boy but when the teaching and learning process begun, he would turn into a shy one. He
was an eight year old boy who was rich in vocabularies, knowing the meaning of the words
but have little idea on how to spell it. His level of proficiency in English was at medium level.
His traits of excelled in vocabulary but faltered in spelling proved once again when the first
session of the intervention began. He was among the few participants who were able to
precisely explain the fruits and vegetables used to spell in the songs and when the
researcher asked him to spell it, he shook his head.
As regards of improving, Umar proved that he was able to sing the songs given in the
second session with less mistake compared to the first session. He was more confident in
singing alone, in pairs and group. The researcher could hear his voice loud and clear
compared to the first session. The observation checklist that was assesed by another
teacher had helped the researcher to observe the participants attention, understanding,
interest, participation and interests during the intervention. For Umars part in terms of his
understanding, it seemed that he was in between yes or no as his expression showed that
he understood it, nodding his head every time he was questioned by the researcher
however, he seemed to be reluctant in carrying out the instructions given. He did not asked
any question throughout the first session as he once again becoming shy for no reason. It

seemed that he relied greatly on other participants active role in the first session and
observed on what others were doing and from there he just followed along. For Umars
interest towards the intervention, he payed enough attention to convince the researcher that
he was listening even though as remarked by the researchers partner that sometimes his
eyes seemed to be wondering. He did not ask any irrelevant questions for both sessions and
was not as eager as other participants were. If we now turn to his perfomance, he was able
to complete the teask in the expected time and he showed a hint of understanding while
performing the task as he was singing along to the songs when he tried to answer the
wroksheet after the intervention. He was also well behaved throughout both sessions and
did not bring any troubles to the reasearcher.
Turning now to the document analysis for Umar, he had shown an improvement as
compared to the worksheet before and after the intervention, his score was higher after the
intervention as less mistake was commited. He was still unable to spell leek and apple for
both worksheet and this was due to the fact that he did not memorize the lyrics of the song.
He spelled leek as liek and apple as appel. This could be related to observation made as
he seemed to wonder around and was not as eager as anyone else. During the first session,
the researcher demonstrated on the intervention as the researcher sang to the songs
numerous times to ensure the participants would be familiar with it. The researcher also
demonstrated on how to implement the intervention while doing the worksheet. The
participants, who were still unsure of the tunes and lyrics did not directly sang together from
the beginning but they were taking the pace rather slowly and for Umar particularly, he was
the slowest of all. This resulted in spelling the word appel as he was the only participant to
get it wrong. For leek, all of the participant had it wrong as they did remember the tune but
failed in remembering the lyrics of the song. In regards to Umars personality, he was the
following type rather than being followed, he just followed other participants singing
confidently. It was supposed to be in the tune of Farmer In The Dell with lyrics; L-e-e-k is
leek, l-e-e-k is leek, Hi Ho, did you know, l-e-e-k is leek , however at the end of the second
session, it turned out to be L-i-e-k is liek, l-i-e-k is liek, Hi Ho, did you know, l-i-e-k is liek.
For both sessions, Umar cooperated well for the interview. Semi structured interview
was done for the intervention. For the first question, he was asked wether spelling was his
strong point in English and he responded Ho which also means yes in Terengganu dialect.
Since he answered yes, the researcher asked him to spell one thing that he was very
confident of spelling and he chose to spell carrot. Carrot was one of the selected vegetables
to be included in the song and the spelling carrot was using the tune of Ten Little Indian.
This result was interesting because out of the three songs listed, Umar had only heard of
Ten Little Indians even though he did not know the exact lyrics for the song. He succesfully

spelled carrot during the interview. For the next question, the researcher asked wether it is
easy to spell and his answer was Senang and the reason was unknown as he just kep quiet
after the question was appointed. For him, the song was interesting and was good to listen
to and despite only had heard of only one song which was Ten Little Indians as mentioned
before, he did not mind as he commented that Suke dohla sebab buleh tahu banyok lagu
doh lepah ni. The comment above illustrated that Umar was enjoying the intervention and
he was able to spell fruits and vegetables with the help of the song provided.
Taken together, these results suggest that there is an association between the use of
songs to help improving the spelling for the participants. Based on the data collected, there
was an improvement made before and after the intervention took place.
