Mosquito Bite (Overview) Mosquito bites usually are not very visible on skin unless there is

an allergic reaction or an infection following the bite. Allergic reaction will cause a redness
white an infection may result in pus formation.
MOSQUITO INFORMATION: INTRODUCTION
Mosquitoes are insects belonging to the order Diptera, the
True Flies. Like all True Flies, they have two wings, but
unlike other flies, mosquito wings have scales. Female
mosquitoes' mouthparts form a long piercing-sucking
proboscis. Males differ from females by having feathery
antennae and mouthparts not suitable for piercing skin. A
mosquito's principal food is nectar or similar sugar source.
There are over 2500 different species of mosquitoes throughout the world; about 200 species
occur in the United States with 45 species occurring in Oregon. A new species, Ochlerotatus
japonicus was reported from the Pierce County, Washington in 2002. Each mosquito species
has a Latin scientific name, such as Anopheles quadrimaculatus. Anopheles is the "generic"
name of a group of closely related mosquitoes and quadrimaculatus is the "species" name
that represents a group of individuals that are similar in structure and physiology and capable
of interbreeding. These names are used in a descriptive manner so that the name tells
something about each particular mosquito, for example, Anopheles -- Greek meaning hurtful
or prejudicial and quadrimaculatus -- Latin meaning four spots (4 dark spots on the wings).
Some species have what are called "common names" as well as scientific names, such as
Ochlerotatus taeniorhynchus , the "black salt marsh mosquito."

Mosquito control is an important component of malaria control strategy, although elimination

of malaria in an area does not require the elimination of all Anopheles mosquitoes. In North
America and Europe for example, although the vector Anopheles mosquitoes are still present,
the parasite has been eliminated. Socio-economic improvements (e.g., houses with screened
windows, air conditioning) combined with vector reduction efforts and effective treatment
have led to the elimination of malaria without the complete elimination of the vectors. On the
other, controlling these highly adapted, flying and hiding vectors is indeed a formidable task.
Development of resistance to insecticides has compounded the problem. Ban on non-

biodegradable and non-eco-friendly insecticides like DDT also

may have contributed to the resurgence of malaria.

The mouthparts of mosquitoes are specially
designed to pierce the surface of animals
and plants. They have special sensory
receptors that help them become aware of
sources of blood. They have special heat,
chemical and visual sensors on their body. The chemical sensors let them be aware of
presence of carbon dioxide.
When animals give out carbon dioxide while breathing out, mosquitoes can detect the source
of Co2 and bite them.
Mosquito Bites Symptoms
Mosquito Bites can give rise to a number of symptoms like : Inflammation
In Mosquito Bites swelling is one of the main symptoms. It arises as an automatic immune
response of the body to the saliva injected by the mosquito bite. In severe cases, swelling can
last for a few hours.
Itchiness: Itchiness is the main symptom of mosquito bites. Itchy feeling arises as a natural
reaction of the body against the saliva, which is a foreign object. Itchiness may last for 5-6
hours in severe cases.

Malaria: This infective disease arises as a long term effect of a mosquito bite. It is caused by
the transmission of Sporozoan parasites into the body of the victim through the sting of an
infected Anopheles mosquito. The disorder causes chills and fever and may even give rise to
death if left untreated or not treated properly.
Yellow Fever: This tropical disease results from an infection by the transmission of arbovirus
from mosquitoes of type Aedes especially Haemagogus and A. Aegypti. It is marked by
jaundice, high fever and also Gastrointestinal Haemorrhaging in some cases.
Dengue Fever: This severe infectious tropical disease results from an infection of the body by
an arbovirus, a kind of RNA virus that is transmitted by mosquitoes. Such an infected
Mosquito Bite causes highly discomforting
Mosquito Bite effects like headaches,
aching joints, muscular pain, rashes and
fever.
Viral Encephalitis: This is a very painful
disease that is characterized by swelling of
the brain. It is generally caused by a virus
transmitted by mosquitoes. It gives rise to
symptoms like nausea, drowsiness,
headache, neck pain and fever.
How To Treat Mosquito Bites?: Mosquito Bites treatment can be done by reducing the
symptoms. Severe itchiness can be reduced with the aid of oral medicines like Benadryl and
topical application of antihistamines.

control severe cases of swelling.
