Career Resources for Classics Students

Think about your skills
A degree in Classics from the University of Leeds develops a broad spectrum of intellectual skills and the
school is widely recognised, with the Leeds International Classics Seminar research form attracting scholars
from all over Europe and the USA. Employers value your capacity for critical reflection and your ability to
analyse information and extract key elements to solve associated problems. Your subject lends itself to a wide
variety of occupations; previous Classics graduates have gone on to areas such as publishing, teaching and
journalism where interpersonal, communication and independence of thought are ideal qualities. Additionally,
Classics students have gone on to be successful in less related sectors including law and finance. Your
degree programme emphasises the development of transferable graduate skills, such as:
Analysis/Critical Reasoning skills Throughout your degree you will have studied a wide range of
materials. You have the developed the ability to extract key points from the data and to critically reflect upon
your findings.
Self Motivation/Independence During your programme there has been an emphasis on independent
learning which illustrates your self reliance and ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision. You
were able to personalise you degree to specialise in literary, historical or social or philosophical aspects of the
subject or to opt for interdisciplinary combinations. You also had the opportunity to study abroad as part of
your course.
Communication skills You will have extensive practice of assimilating and organising complex ideas to
produce reasoned arguments and will have demonstrated you advanced literacy skills. You are able to present
your findings in either written or verbal form through essays, seminars, presentations and your level 3
dissertation. During small-group seminars you have frequently debated complex topics, exchanged ideas and
responded to the views of others.
Problem Solving skills You are able to deploy information and extract key elements from data to identify
and solve associated problems. For instance, you applied your knowledge and independent research skills to
produce your dissertation.
Your course will have given you all these skills and others like project management, flexibility and initiative.
Refer to the Options with Classics sheet (www.prospects.ac.uk/options_classics.htm ). It is a good idea to
think about ALL the skills you have developed in different situations as you will have acquired a good many
others during work experience and your extracurricular activities. Have a look at
http://careerweb.leeds.ac.uk/info/4/make_yourself_employable/179/how_to_develop_your_skills and list the
skills you have to offer with examples.
