SCOPE
This procedure applies to the requirement for on job hardness testing to be
performed at shop floor for pressure piping coils welds of carbon and low alloy
steels.

EQUIPMENT

2.1

Instrument shall be portable hardness tester (integrated hardness tester).

2.2

Persons engaged in testing shall be familiar with the equipment operation and shall
have relevant experience in hardness testing with mentioned equipment.

REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
ASTM A-450

: Standard Specification for General Requirement for Carbon and

Low Alloy Steel Tubes.

ASTM E 10

: Standard Test Method for Brinell hardness of Metallic Materials.

ASME B 31.3

: ASME Code for Process Piping

METHOD

4.1

Instrument shall be verified on ASTM E10 standard calibrated test block having
known hardness. Traceability of the test block shall be maintained.

4.2

Use of equipment (hardness tester) shall be as per manufacturers instruction

manual. Before performing hardness check, the appropriate mode of testing shall be
set in tester.

4.3

The surface to be examined shall be smooth, free from dirt, grease, oil & scale.
Surface shall be prepared by light grinding or solvent cleaning (if required). The

welds shall be flush ground on location by light grinding (applicable only for area to
be examined).
4.4

Hardness test shall be performed after PWHT wherever applicable.

4.5

The hardness check shall be performed at welds, heat affected zone (HAZ) and
adjacent base material to welds. Separation distance between reading shall be
specified as per ASTM E10 requirements

4.6

The appeared hardness value after testing shall be reported and same procedure is
to be followed repeatedly to take all required reading as per the extent mentioned
below. Brinell hardness testing machine verification shall be demonstrated
according to the ASTM E10 requirements

4.7

Indenter & calibration block certificate shall be verified by inspection authority prior
to proceeding for examination.

HARDNESS REQUIREMENT AND ACCEPTANCE

Hardness in base metals, weld and heat affected zone as per ASTM E10 shall not
exceed the following:
For P No. 9
For P No. 11

241 BHN
250 BHN

RETEST
Whenever any spot / seam fail to meet above requirement / ITP requirement, two
additional spots as required in 4.4 above shall be tested, further more if any spot
fail to meet requirements in additional test, the non-conformance report (NCR) after
consulting with client shall be raised against the non-conforming items and further
action shall be taken suitable heat treatment or weld removal etc as per the
resolution of NCR.

REPORT / DOCUMENTATION
Report the results in Hardness Test Report.
