Township reviews results

of Water Consultant Report
completed due to closed wells

Erin Cogan pushes her daughter Clare, 2, on the tire swing at Frank Fullerton Memorial Park on
Thursday, Aug. 27, enjoying the last few days of the unofficial end to summer.

Since two water wells were

closed last October, the township
has been working with the state
Department of Environmental
Protection to find the best treatment option.
The closing of Wells 7 and 9 on
Church Street was a precaution
and on NJDEP recommendation.
A small amount of an unregulated substance, Trichloropropane
(TCP 1,2,3), was found in the
water at .067 parts per billion.
While a Water Consultant Report was being completed, well 7
was reopened after testing nondetected in June. The report was
completed July 17 and was posted
on the township website on Aug.
12.
The health and safety of our
residents is paramount to the
township, and the drinking water
in town is safe, township manager Scott Carew said. Moorestown
has been in compliance with state

and federal drinking water regulations. The township continues

to work with the NJDEP to determine the best treatment solution
to ensure we have the cleanest
water possible.
The Water Consultant Report
determined the risk of using the
wells while treatment was put
into place. The results came back
with the potential for non-cancer
risks being low and all estimated
cancer risks below the EPA target.
The report is an expert evaluation of the health risk levels of
using wells 7 and 9 within the
context of the TCP 1,2,3. The unregulated substance was found
during Moorestowns participation in the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agencys Unregulated
Contaminant Monitoring Rule 3
program, which is a mandatory
program to collect data for contaminants that do not have

Kindness and community coordinator for Moorestown, created a

Kindness Wheel, which is modeled like a Wheel of Fortune,
with 18 aspects of kindness on it
to help facilitate kindness activities among residents and organizations.
Im hoping that this will get
people talking about (kindness)
and that there will be this spread
of awareness. I think that
Moorestown is already a wonderful community, but there are plenty of places where we can spread
out kindness, Myers said.
Moorestown has been celebrating Kindness Week in the township since 1996, around the week
of Valentines Day. As 2015 is the
20th year, Myers wanted to do
something special. She approached Mayor Victoria Napolitano about her idea, but she was
unsure of exactly what to do.

two inspirations she is using to
spread kindness in Moorestown.

Soccer is just the place. Boasting
the most robust and comprehensive feeder program in the county,
Moorestown Recreation Soccer
begins in kindergarten and allows young boys and girls a perfect opportunity to try soccer.
As a more than 50-year-old program, the Recreation Soccer Program has boasted a comprehen-

sive and inclusive soccer program for all ages. Recreation Soccer starts in kindergarten and repeatedly stresses the fundamentals of skills, sportsmanship and
player development. The compact
playing season allows younger
children the opportunity for athletic development of multiple
sports over the course of multiple
seasons. Remaining true to recreation ideals that encourage whole
athlete development, Recreation
Soccer allows all children, grades
K-8, the opportunity to participate in developmental, fun sports
that provide a friendly, yet competitive, atmosphere.
Kindergarten leagues are
teaching leagues that allow for
children to learn the basic and developmental skills of soccer.
Playing on smaller fields with
smaller nets and allowing for onfield coaching gives young players the knowledge and confidence
that propels them forward.

Grades first to second typically

play together, which allows first
graders the opportunity to play
with seasoned second graders.
Conversely, the second graders
can improve their skill set by
teaching their younger teammates. Field sizes grow as do
stamina and conditioning levels.
The camaraderie and mentoring
that occur in multi-grade league
play are life-long skills. As children move up through third and
fourth grades, the same kind of
individual and team development
occurs, and by the time children
reach the fifth, sixth, seventh and
eighth grade leagues, they are
able to compete on a higher level.
Many children who play Recreation Soccer often decide to try

eroin is a dangerous drug. We

all know that. But for a long
time, it was a drug that remained out of the mainstream, reserved, in many peoples minds, for
the inner cities.
Somewhere, somehow, a few years
ago, though, the awful drug made its
way out of tiny inner circles and has
become an epidemic throughout our
state.
The Department of Human Services
Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services released a report in May
that found that in 2014, 28,332 people in
New Jersey were admitted into substance abuse treatment programs with
heroin or another opiate listed as the
individuals primary drug. Thats almost half of the 64,766 people who en-

tered treatment programs last year.

More terrifying is the significant increase in the number of heroin-related
deaths. In 2009, 351 heroin deaths were
reported in New Jersey, according to
the state Department of Criminal Justice. That number jumped to 449 in
2011, up to 591 in 2012, then 741 in 2013
and finally 781 last year.
The state has been trying to curb
this problem by first giving life-saving
Narcan kits to police departments
throughout New Jersey, and then ex-

panding that program to provide the

kits to anyone police or not who
completes training.
Its great that there is a tool that can
help save the life of someone who has
overdosed on heroin. But saving the
life in that instance does not stop that
person from taking the drug.
The next step in our states fight
against heroin must be more educational and treatment programs, readily available to kids at a young age. Can
we build more facilities and expand
drug prevention education?
The way to stop heroin-related
deaths is to prevent people from using
the drug in the first place. Because,
once they use the drug, its an uphill
battle fighting its highly-addictive nature.

letter to the editor

A special thanks for above
and beyond kindness
Im well aware that most letters to the
editor are politically minded and they usually contain complaints on passing the
buck of blame. This one is different. This is
a letter of gratitude for personal service in
business that once was a regular occurrence in small town Moorestown, but sadly
seems to be vanishing along with all of the
other civility of service that now is only reserved for the wealthy.
This happened last week. I was desperately in need of dental work and, like most
folks, had no dental insurance. I needed to
come up with some fast cash so I decided to
sell my car. I had a back up secondary
jalopy that would bear another winter,
maybe two.

Cosmetically the for sale Jetta was a

dreadful case of 15 years of abuse that had
taken its toll. It was doubtful anyone would
buy it; so I thought, maybe if I had it
cleaned up, I could get enough money for
one root canal, of three that were needed.
The prices of the detailing dealerships
listed in the yellow pages hurt more than
my teeth and I had no means or help to
drive it to the shop, leave it for days and
have more help to go pick it up. The anxiety
was probably responsible for the summer
flu I got Life was not good.
Then I called this guy who used to work
on Mill Street with Ed Ebert. Possibly my
fever caused me to mistake this guy for an
angel, Angel Tommy. He told me to cheer
up and he would come over and get my car
to his shop in Cherry Hill where his team
would detail the entire car. They would be
cleaning inside and out; steam clean the

engine, shampoo the upholstery; wash and

wax it; Armor All everything, including
the wheel and any chrome surface would
be mirror polished; and make the baby
look brand new. He even had a spray bottle
that made the old cars have the brand new
smell.
Then Angel Tommy delivered it back to
my drive way the very next day. I thought it
was someone elses car. Now thats customer service. He only charged me $135 for
everything.
My oh my, there are truly good people
out there that do wonderful acts like this
everyday, but are rarely acknowledged.
So I want to publicly thank Tommy Gordon and his business called The Detail Specialist in Cherry Hill, for being a legitimately kind man. My faith in human nature has been reinforced.

week of kindness, Moorestown

proclaim there be a year of kindness. In February, Napolitano
gave a proclamation to Myers for
just that.
Because of this, Myers was inspired to get everyone involved.
According to Myers, there used to
be a community non-profit group
where kindness programs and activities were done each year.
With this, Myers felt it was the
perfect opportunity to bring kindness to the forefront of peoples
minds once again. She was greatly inspired by The Power of
Kindness by Piero Ferrucci, a
book breaking down kindness
into 18 aspects.
There is something so special
about this book and the way the
essays describe different aspects
of kindness, Myers said.
Through some trial and error,
Myers came up with the idea for a

Kindness Wheel, a Wheel of Fortune type of wheel that has the

18 aspects of kindness from Ferruccis book.
The Kindness Wheel is a way
to represent the 18 aspects of kindness in a simple form that is accessible to everyone, Myers said.
Each wedge of the wheel is designated for a month and an aspect
of kindness representative of
that month. This wheel begins
with Service in September; Contact in October; Gratitude in November; Generosity in December;
Honesty in January; Forgiveness
in February; Belonging in March;
Joy in April; Memory in May; Respect in June; Loyalty in July;
Flexibility in August; Mindfulness in September; Patience in
October; Trust in November;
Warmth in December; Humility
in January; and ending with Empathy in February 2017. The
wheel is designed is so it can be
used over again, too.
People can use the spinner, or
an object to throw on the wheel,
to decide what other aspect to

bring to the month or that day.
For example, if the spinner lands
on Trust, the person who spun
thinks about how he or she can
combine trust with that months
idea.
It brings a playful kind of feeling making it a wheel. It can also
really provoke your thoughts and
youll think about what it lands
on and ask yourself, How can I do
that? Myers said.
In the center of the wheel,
there is an open space for a name
of a person or an organization, so
it can deepen the purpose of
being an ambassador of kindness.
For September, Myers suggests
thinking of service along with
peace, as Sept. 21 is the International Day of Peace.
Rather than kindness being
just a word, break it up into 18 different actions so it can become
more readily available. Were really causing a ripple effect, and
that is what peace in the world is
all about, Myers said.
Before International Day of
Peace, Myers will have an event at
the Moorestown Library talking
about the Wheel of Kindness,
how to become an ambassador of
kindness and what someone can
do to spread kindness to others
and the community at large. This
will occur on Tuesday, Sept. 15
from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
(The purpose) is to deepen
and enliven others, to give people
more ideas and to generate more
love and joy within the community, Myers said.
Myers hopes the Kindness
Wheel will get people talking and
make others more aware of
spreading kindness and the effect
is has, not only on others, but the
person spreading it and the
world.
I would like people to say,
This is a really kind town. Kindness is spoken here, Myers said.
For more information, go to
Facebook and search Kindness
Today or contact Myers at kindnesscampaign@comcast.net.

This information was provided

by the Moorestown Township
Public Schools Board of Education president Kathy Goldenberg:
At the Aug. 25 Board of Education meeting, the board appointed
Business Administrator Lynn
Shugars as acting superintendent

effective Sept. 1.
Shugars served the district in
the same capacity from Sept. 1,
2013 through February 2014.
The board also approved the
appointment of John Fraser as
the superintendent search consultant to begin the search immediately for an interim superin-

tendent.
Fraser has previously been the
personnel
director
for
Moorestown Township Public
Schools, and a previous superintendent search consultant, and is
extremely well versed in the
many attributes of Moorestown
Township Public Schools.

STEM to unveil Stokes Hill Historic Marker

Save The Environment of
Moorestown will unveil the
Stokes Hill Historic Marker on
Sunday, Sept.
13 at 3 p.m.
For decades,
people
have
loved to sled at Stokes Hill, named
for an early owner. The privately
owned hill was used by the public
for years by virtue of an arrangement between the landowner and
the township.
But in 1991, the property was to
be sold for development. Fierce
public outcry prompted Carol
Mastran, local artist and STEM

briefs

member, to spearhead a Save

Stokes Hill campaign. Contributors to the cause donated thousands of dollars to help pay for
the purchase of the property. She
led the children of Moorestown to
rally strong community support
with their lively posters of sledders on the hill.
In 1993, after voters had passed
the first non-binding Open Space
Referendum that backed the use
of township funds to preserve
open space, the 8.3 acre site was
acquired by the township with assistance from Green Acres funds.
Stokes Hill is located at 240

the risk of getting hit by lightning (1 in 12,000 per the National

Weather Service).

Reopening of well 7
dards set under the Safe Drinking
Water Act.
The report enables the township to make sound, responsible
decisions regarding any potential
health risk caused by the TCP, according to Carew. While the report was being completed, the
township closed the wells in question.
Dr. James Bus of the firm Exponent completed the Water Consultant Report. According to
Carew, Bus was chosen because
he is one of the nations leading
toxicologists.
The firm conducted a risk assessment using standard EPA
methodology and regulatory risk
values, and using data provided
by the townships water and
sewer
consulting
engineer,
Alaimo. It took several months
for the report to be complete.

Since it is being used for a pilot

treatment program, well 9 remains closed. Well 7 was reopened in June, as there was a
non-detect for TCP 1,2,3.
It is tested on a monthly basis,
and if TCP 1,2,3 returns, the
township said it would consult
NJDEP once again for a recommendation. This occurred after a
recent reading of 0.07 parts per
billion of TCP 1,2,3 in well 7.
Upon conferring with the NJDEP,
the township is keeping the well
on and will continue to monitor it

monthly.
To put this into context, the
only state to regulate TCP is
Hawaii and their maximum contaminant level is 0.6 or nearly 10
times higher than our most recent number, Carew said.
The full Water Consultant Report is available to the public for
viewing
online
at
the
Moorestown Township website at
www.moorestown.nj.us. Bus profile can be viewed at www.exponent.com/james_bus/.

Report results
The Water Consultant Report
determined the potential for noncancer risks being low in the
Moorestown wells, with margins
of exposure of over 1,000-times
lower than the drinking water
equivalent level (DWEL).
The DWEL is a water concentration to which an individual
could be exposed for a lifetime
with the expectation that adverse,
non-cancer effects would not
occur.
The report also concluded all
estimated cancer risks are below
the EPA target of a 1 in 10,000
extra cancer risk for drinking
water contaminants. Given the
anticipated short-term exposure
to TCP, a more conservative cancer risk level is not warranted,
the report read.
While it would be difficult to
find anything we consume to be
completely risk-free, the risk of
drinking water from wells 7 and 9
is far lower than the target that
the U.S. EPA and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection use (1 in 10,000 extra cancer risk for drinking water contaminants), Carew said. To put
it into context, it is far lower than
