MARCH 2010

APPOINTMENT OF NEW DISTRICT COMMISSIONER

I am please to announce that Kathryn Wills has agreed with the nomination from the Search Group and,
subject to ratification by the County Appointments committee next week, David Turton will be the new Dis-
trict Commissioner for Central Notts . David was, until recently, the Scout Leader at 3rd Woodthorpe, I am
sure you will all join me in wishing Dave well in his new role and offer him our total support - Roger Whibley,
District Chairman.

A message from Dave :-

Hello all
I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to lead our District as your new DC. My former role was at
3rd Woodthorpe where I was the Scout Leader for 6 years, so if you are not directly involved with the Scout Section
you may not know me. So here are a few basic facts about me so we can get to know each other a little better.
My wife's name is Elaine and we have 2 children, Lauren and Jack, who are both Scouts. I live in Arnold and have
worked on the Railway since I left School. My hobby is Scuba Diving which I enjoy in the cold waters in and around
the UK , plus when I get the chance in warmer water on holidays abroad.
I am looking forward to meeting and working with you all over the coming months and building on the success that Cen-
tral Notts already currently enjoys.

Kind Regards Dave Turton

I am delighted to welcome Dave Turton as the new District Commissioner for Central Notts.
Dave comes with a Scout Leader background but also a management background which is vital for the
successful running of such a large district as Central Notts.
He has some new ideas about taking the District forward and I know that you will all give him the support he
needs to make a success of this role.

Kathryn Wills County Commissioner

DISTRICT SWIMMING GALA

A big well done to all of you who took part in the District Swimming Gala, and
apologies to all those helpers who I had to leave in the lurch when a family
emergency required me to jet off to Dubai.
An especially big apology and thank you to both Roger Foxall— who I coerced
into overseeing the event— and to Steve Tupper in his role as last minute scorer.
Sorry also that no awards were made on the night. We were already short of our
calligrapher, so certificates were doubtful, and then we ran out of time—we were
supposed to have vacated the pool by 9.15pm, and I am led to believe that it was
almost 9.30pm by the time the last event finished.
This may have in part been due to the bumper number of entries. It was nice to see that we had some Groups repre-
sented who we had not seen for some years—11 out of 16 Groups had at least one section competing - and even nicer
to see that there were different units winning the trophies. Come on you Explorer Scouts 4 out of 7 units were present
but the same name is going on those Trophies again this year!!
Anyway— trophies are with the respective section ADC’s and will be presented shortly, if they have not already been
done . Certificates may take a bit longer—I have a pile of result slips on my desk top, and I will get around to transpos-
ing them into certificates as soon as possible.
RESULTS:
Cub Scout overall trophy:—2nd Arnold, with 1st Woodborough in 2nd and
3rd Netherfield in 3rd places. Cub Scout Relay trophy:—2nd Arnold, with 3rd Netherfield in 2nd and 1st Woodborough
in 3rd places.
Scout overall trophy:—1st Farnsfield with 4th Carlton in 2nd and 1st Southwell in 3rd places.
Scout relay trophy:—1st Farnsfield with 4th Carlton in 2nd and 3rd Woodthorpe in 3rd places.
Explorer Scout overall trophy and relay trophy:—Gemini USU with Weaver ESU in 2nd place and Equinox USU in
3rd.
Group Relay Trophy: - 1st Calverton, with 4th Carlton in 2nd and 5th Carlton in 3rd places.
TENTS FOR AFRICA
As many of you know, Phil and Elaine Barlow have
visited Africa twice last year, and whilst out there
they made contact with the local Scout organisa-
tion. As a result, on their return they made an ap-
peal for items of Scouting equipment, especially
camping gear.
Thanks to your kind donations, a quantity was

shipped out, and we have now received these pictures

of them enjoying the use of some of the items you do-
nated.
Once again, thank you to those of you who donated to
this appeal.

Terry Woodcock sent in this newspaper cutting—so ALL OUR

apologies for the lack of quality—of local Scouts off to
Windsor to receive their Kings Scout Awards YESTERDAYS
Someone has kindly penned in the year—1952—but
the question is—is anyone out there who can put
names to any of these faces?

Well done to the team from 2nd Arnold Scouts who

won the District Quiz on 29th January.
The runners up were 4th Carlton and
1st Porchester.
Well done to everybody who took part - nearly all
the Scout groups in the District were represented at
the competition which was held at the headquarters
of last years champions - 5th Carlton.
2nd Arnold will now represent Central Notts. in the
County Scout Quiz later in

As some of you will know I need a hair cut!

A number of drivers at NCT are holding a sponsored head shave for ‘Help for Heros’
and I’m taking part.
So, on 8th April I’ll be having my head shaved (yes, shaved) and I’m looking for
sponsors to make this worthwhile
If anyone wishes to sponsor me please contact me at martin.tetley@ntlworld.com Thank you
