Dr. Troy Myers gives us a "tour" of the optomap which is now in use at Glasgow Eye Care.

'Really fancy camera' comes to Glasgow

While eyes don't talk, they

can tell a ton of wealth about your
health, especially if you have an
optomap retinal exam.
"An optomap is basically a
really fancy camera," explained Dr.
Troy Myers, OD, who has Glendive
EyeCare and Glasgow EyeCare.

"I call it Glasgow's best kept

secret," added Linda Stathos who
handles the Glasgow office.
The optomap was originally
designed for children. In 1990, fiveyear-old Leif Anderson went blind
in one eye due to an undiagnosed
retinal detachment. He was getting

regular eye exams, but conventional

tests available at the time made a
thorough examination difficult.
Distressed by the diagnostic
methods available, Leif 's father,
Douglas, designed the optomap
retinal exam.

Fancy camera continued from front

While the optomap technology has been in use for some

time now, "It was very limited to elite practices," explained
Dr. Myers.

He has utilized an optomap in Glendive for a few years
and decided that having one in Glasgow is vital after literally
saving lives each year in Glendive with the optomap.
The optomap Retinal Exam provides a panoramic view
of the back of a person's eye (the retina). The view provided
by the optomap displays over 80% (over 220) of the retina.
The patient simply places their eye to be photographed up
to the instrument it's like looking through a keyhole
and a photograph is taken, capturing its image in only 1/4
of a second: no dyes, no blast of air on the eye ball, just fast,
painless and comfortable!

Your retina (located in the back of your eye) is the only
place in the body where blood vessels can be seen directly.
This means that in addition to eye conditions, signs of other
diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetes,
stroke, heart disease, hypertension and even some forms of
cancer can be seen in the retina.

Early signs of any of these conditions can show on your
retina long before you notice any changes to your vision or
feel pain.

"We can catch some weird things that pop up," Dr. Myers
added, "or even a whiplash accident from 12 years ago."

What you really want when have an optomap exam is a
"boring" photo nothing there out of the ordinary.

"Boring is a good thing," he says, "because if you see me
get excited, we've got problems."

Early diagnosis is the key to health; it's a lifesaver. Once
a patient has a visual picture in front of them and Dr. Myers
points out that, yes, there is a problem, "It really clicks
it hits home," he says upon seeing this reaction from his
patients: "Hey, this guy isn't a quack, I have to seek more
medical attention!"
It also scares people into submission to take their
prescriptions for high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.

Dr. Myers pointed out that having the optomap is not
an attempt to "steal" patients from other eye doctors, but
simply for everyone to have access to this state-of-the-art
technology yet another tool to aid in our community's
health care. For instance, if you are a patient of Dr. Kolstad's,
you can still come and take advantage of having your eyes
photographed by optomap.
If you'd like more information or to schedule an
appointment for an optos, give Linda a call at 228-8200. Just
to let you know, the price is ridiculously low for an optos (and
for a full eye examination, an optos is included in the price!).

Did you know? Many vision problems begin at an early
age in childhood, so its important for children to receive
proper eye care from the time they are infants. Early detection
and treatment are essential to preventing conditions that
could potentially cause problems or vision loss.

Glasgow EyeCare's Linda Stathos has been in the

eye business for 25 years and was named Montana's
"Paraoptometric of the Year" for 2013-14.

An optomap can even give a

hint of your ancestry! (Asian
descent, Northern European
descent, etc.)

Bunch of buffalo bull

I was disappointed in the Aug. 14, 2015 Great Falls
Tribune article, Restoring buffalo is an act of healing by
the National Wildlife Federation.

The article claims that ['Original Americans] lives
centered on a close relationship with buffalo for thousands
of years. And yet, it proposes restoring buffalo in and
around the million-acre Charles M. Russell National
Wildlife Refuge.

I firmly believe that buffalo and Original Americans
were part of a vital dual species keystone species complex.
Neither species could operate in its old, keystone function
without the other. Losing its ecosystem partner would be
devastating to the orphaned species. I believe that we saw
this in the Original Americans when the bison disappeared,
and I also believe that losing their ecosystem partners to
small pox and war was the single most critical factor in the
near-extinction of the buffalo. To just take bison alone,
dump them on the CMR, and assume that abandoned
bison will be every bit as healthy as bison that have their
evolved ecosystem partners seems to me to be the height
of disrespect to those partners. If it is true, and I believe
it is, that Original Americans had a close relationship
with buffalo, then buffalo should be going where there are
Original Americans (or other people willing to fulfill that
vital role) that can have a close relationship with them,
and not into a great, big lake.
Almost half the article emphasizes how Original
Americans have no contact with buffalo anymore. I was
shocked by this claim. As far as I know, every Montana
reservation has its own herd of bison. Certainly all the
reservations that Ive been on have bison Ive seen
them. Why would the article dwell at such length on the
idea that Original Americans can no longer eat buffalo,
no longer see buffalo? My little girl can see buffalo
belonging to Original Americans, surely their own little
girls are able to. What is the purpose of denigrating
tribal herds? These are the buffalo for which the close

relationship yet exists. Isnt that something that should

be celebrated with pride? Montanas impressive tribal
buffalo herds are granted exactly one sentence, Several
Montana tribes already are working to restore buffalo on
their lands.

According to this article, the No-Action Alternative
can [not] possibly be considered an option. Why not?
Right now, the tribes are free to own their own herds of
bison and manage them in close relationship. Selling
premium buffalo hunts brings in much needed revenue
to the reservation. Giving the state of Montana control
over bison would put the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks
(FWP) in direct competition with Montanas tribes. And
there is absolutely no reason to believe that the bison and
their ecosystem would thrive under FWP management;
the specters of disease and starvation loom.
Several years ago, I listened with horror as the
FWP lawyer testified in court that Montanas Original
Americans cannot be trusted to effectively manage bison
and therefore that control must be in the hands of FWP.
Listening to that testimony made me feel physically ill.
It is with great disappointment that I find the Great Falls
Tribune and the National Wildlife Federation skating so
very close to that same opinion.

Letter to the Buzz

Dear Shareholders of SMDC, St.

Marie Residents and interested parties

The meeting regarding SMDC that was called by Marv

Bethea and Mike Mitchell for Wednesday, August 26, 2015,
was not an official meeting of SMDCs shareholders or
directors because it was called without giving reasonable
notice as required by law, notice was not waived, and a
quorum was not present. We need a true SMDC Board, not
a Marv Bethea, Mike Mitchell and Sovereign Citizen Board.
Moreover, the Board of Directors is required by
SMDCs Articles of Incorporation to have 12 members, and
under Montana law the Board may have no fewer than 9
members, all of whom must be elected by the shareholders
at a meeting properly noticed and conducted for that
purpose.
For many years I found no one who would be a
candidate for the board because of no value/market for
SMDC properties or hope for St. Marie development, and
as such no value for its stock. I have kept things alive for
many years with an informal board using my own funds.
Now there is reason to hope the Board can be
reconstituted now that Mr Strommen is getting involved with
his Class B stock and a strong religious leader responded to
the website and the vision for a Christian Community, and
we still have our retired military to invite to St. Marie.

Now we need people to come forward to set on the
board who are interested in the development of St. Marie.
We can bring quality people, create jobs, new school
programs and an over all better quality of life for our area.
(Call me if you are interested on being on the board so it
will not be dominated by special interest groups, per above.
406-480-1116). We need good people. I have been fighting
for many years for a quality St. Marie like Judy and I built 20
years ago, I ask for your help to create a community we can
all be proud of.

As candidates who are willing to serve on the Board
step forward, all of the shareholders should have an
opportunity to evaluate the candidates and participate in
a full shareholders meeting that is properly scheduled and
conducted. Once the shareholders fill the Board, it can
finally be run as designed.

As President of SMDC, I am scheduling a shareholder
meeting shortly to elect the Board of Directors. I would like
to mail the notification of the meeting to the shareholders as
soon as possible and could use help in doing so.

Once the Board is elected, it can address the business
of SMDC beginning with a quiet title action.

I am excited in the prospects of going forward with
assistance from a full board.

Sincerely,
Patrick Kelly
