continues to make headlines
in Florida and much of the
nation. It has also dropped the

level that many species of marine

Florida Wildlife Commission
recently reported that over 200
manatee deaths have occurred
so far this year due to the cold
temperature.
Several large fish kills have
also been reported. Especially
affected were some sub-tropical
species that until recent history
were not thought to exist along
the central Florida coast, but
due to several years of warm
weather, we have been enjoying
a very nice snook fishery the
past few years.
Many anglers may think that
it will take several years for them
to rebound from the record cold
that effected so many this winter,

day outing with her husband,
booked thru Osprey Guide
Service and Capt. Rick. The trip was a couple of weeks after our coldest weather this year.
The fish had an area of missing scales on both sides that appeared to be from a predator attack
that it had managed to escape. It put up a great battle, finally being netted, just as it frayed the
twenty pound bite leader in two.
After a few pictures, the fish was released unharmed. Being such a nice spawning size
indicates to me that the future snook population may rebound fairly quickly, with some help
on the conservation front.
Like the manatee that migrate to the warmth of the fresh water springs and warm water
outlets, so do many of the fish species, ensuring an on going existence in the area, even during
the coldest of times. The cold will soon give way to warmer weather, allowing many of us to
get back on the water. If you are lucky enough to catch a large spawning-sized fish of a species
that may have been depleted this winter, please allow it to go back, so that we may all may have

Spring Take Me Fishing campaign, to get the next generation of anglers out on the water.
This year, RBFF is building youth enthusiasm for the sport by partnering with Jose Wejebe,
host of Spanish Fly, Vida del Mar and Saltwater Sundays on ESPN2.
Known for his creative cinematography, fine-tuned editing and progressive style of

“The core mission of RBFF is simple, to encourage participation in boating and fishing,”
said RBFF President and CEO Frank Peterson. “We believe that engaging parents and getting
kids interested in the sport are some of the best ways we can fulfill that mission.”
His television show, Spanish Fly, captures audiences with breathtaking underwater
footage, spectacular cinematography, complimentary editing and Jose's signature, on-screen
style. Jose is best known for his unique interactive style of fishing. He uses techniques that he
learned throughout his travels and continues to do so today. In the present day, Jose enjoys
