IS LINKWORD GERMAN LEVEL 3 FOR?

holidaymakers
business
school work

This course is designed for anyone with a basic knowledge of German who wants a
fast, easy way of boosting his or her vocabulary and grammar to the point where
everyday communication is possible. This level 3 course does assume that you hav
e the vocabulary and grammar up to the level covered in the level 1 and 2 course
s. If you find that you have not reached this level when you use the present lev
el 3 course, you should go over levels 1 and 2.
The Linkword courses have been carefully designed to teach you an extensive voca
bulary and a basic grammar in a simple step-by-step way that anyone can follow.
Levels 1 and 2 teach a basic standard of German grammar as well as an extensive
vocabulary. However, levels 3 and 4 German take both vocabulary and grammar to a
much higher level.
This level 3 course is ideal, therefore, for the holidaymaker or business person
who, having completed levels 1 and 2 Linkword German, wants to take their under
standing of German vocabulary and grammar to a more advanced level.
The course is also an ideal supplement to school and college work. Many students
feel that they remember words for the first time when introduced to the Linkwor
d system, and understand basic grammar for the first time too. Finally, this cou
rse is ideal for those who have learned German at school or college some time ag
o but who are now rusty. Linkword is an ideal revision course, covering much of
the vocabulary and grammar you learned (or should have learned!) at school or co
llege in a quick and painless way, so that it will all come flooding back.

HOW TO USE LINKWORD GERMAN LEVEL 3
You will be presented with words like this:
The German for CABBAGE is KOHL (pronounced KOHL)
Imagine a CABBAGE growing out of a heap of COAL
After you have read the image you should think about it in your mind's eye for a
bout 10 seconds before moving on to the next word. If you do not spend enough ti
me thinking about the image it will not stick in your memory as well as it shoul
d.
Sometimes the word in German and in English is the same or very similar. For exa
mple, the German for 'taxi' is 'taxi'. When this happens you will he asked to as
sociate the word in some way with the German Flag.
Imagine a taxi covered in the German flag. Whenever the German flag come to mind
therefore, you will know the word is the same or similar in both English and Ge
rman.
The sentence examples given in the course may well strike you as silly and bizar
re. They have deliberately been given in this way to show up points of grammar a
nd to get away from the idea that you should remember useful phrases 'parrot fas
hion'. However, during the course, some 'sensible' sentence examples are given t
o show you how easy it is to use your knowledge in real life, everyday situation
s.

PRONUNCIATION
This course is designed for learners who already have a knowledge of German pron
unciation. However, when each new word is presented for the first time you can h

ear the correct pronunciation.

ACCENTS
There is one accent you will come across in this course. It is called an umlaut.
To enter the umlaut characters (, , and ), hold down the Alt key and the Shift key
, then press the relevant letter key. For example, to enter the character, hold
down Alt and Shift and press A. The accent changes the way the word is pronounce
d but you will hear the exact way the word is pronounced every time a new word i
s presented.

SOME USEFUL HINTS
1. This level 3 course assumes you have reached the standard of vocabulary and
grammar of the level 1 and 2 courses. If you find that as you go through this co
urse you do not have sufficient vocabulary or grammar to translate sentences, yo
u should first go through the levels 1 and 2 course.
2. Don't worry about forgetting a few words, and do not go back to relearn word
s you have forgotten. Just think of how much you are learning, and try to pick u
p the forgotten words when it comes to revising.
3. Revise after Section 4, Section 8, and at the end of the course. Then revise
the whole course a week later, and a month later.
4. Don't worry if you forget some of the words or grammar after a time. Relearn
ing is extremely fast, and going through the course for a few hours just before
you go abroad will quickly get you back to where you were.
5. The course will not give you conversational fluency. You can't expect this u
ntil you go abroad and live in a country for a period of time. What it will give
you very rapidly is the ability to survive in a large number of situations you
will meet abroad. It will also give you a substantial enough vocabulary and gram
mar to provide a platform from which you can become fluent and give you a really
sound basic grounding for school and college work.

IMPORTANT NOTE
The grammar for Linkword Level 3 is more advanced and more complex than for Link
word levels 1 and 2.
We strongly advise you to read through each grammar section carefully, then atte
mpt to translate the sentences that follow - but do NOT worry if you make mistak
es.
When you get to the end of a section for the first time, go back to the beginnin
g of that section and go through the grammar again. This time, make a written no
te on a notepad of the main grammatical points that are causing you difficulty.
It is much better for the learning process to have to think about grammar points
by writing them down that to just read over them again.
Once you have finished making notes of the main grammar points, you should again
attempt to translate the sentence examples that follow.
YOU MUST NOT WORRY ABOUT WHAT YOU DON'T GET RIGHT. JUST THINK ABOUT ALL THE VOCA
BULARY AND GRAMMAR THAT YOU DO GET RIGHT.
