The time is now for Governor David Paterson to step down after the host of missteps and attempts to
modify the truth continue. The Governor is illustrating his inability to do his job. As a leader in the
state of New York, the Governor should not be violating ethics rules and then attempting to suppress
the truth. His endeavor to try to cover up a domestic violence incident involving his aide, David
Johnson and then to try to diminish the event is not only insulting to women but also inexcusable to
all. According to a third person, the Governor directed his press secretary, Marissa Shorenstein, to
ask the woman to publicly describe the incident as nonviolent. That description would contradict the
woman’s accounts in court and to law enforcement. Domestic violence, New York Yankee tickets,
and the New York State Police are the news bulletins, instead of what is really important in New York
State.
Governor Paterson continues to exhibit clumsy blunders and faulty judgment during these crucial
times when we must focus on trying to pull New York State out of a huge budget deficit and when we
need to alter the direction of our state. He has shown that he is incapable of leadership which is
what is desperately necessary in Albany at this time.
New York State is in the middle of a huge economic crisis, a fact that we have been discussing in
Committee Meetings, briefings, and in Caucus meetings. While we are in serious deliberations
regarding the economy, education, social services, unemployment, economic development, nursing
homes, hospitals, taxes, and so many other problems that are critical and of great magnitude,
attention and focus is on the circus of scandals facing the Governor.
In the interest of the people of New York State, the Governor should resign so that we can move
forward to serve our constituents through good government and serious, thoughtful deliberations, not
more fodder for “Saturday Night Live”.
I call on the Governor to make a responsible, conscientious, respectable and moral decision—resign
now rather than serve as an obstacle and allow us to function as we should.
