2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

India, despite a slight drop in exports in 2014, continued its dominance in the
global rice trade. In 2014, India exported 11,162 thousand tonnes of rice
totaling 7,906 million USD, 3% under the previous year. Its primary trading
partner was Saudi Arabia, where it supplied 17% of its total rice exports in
value terms, accounting for essentially all of Saudi Arabias total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, India was a net exporter of rice. Over this period, exports
consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms this difference
was even more pronounced.
Thailand and Pakistan were among the other main global suppliers of rice in
2014. Thailand was the leader in global rice exports until 2011. The fastest
growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Brazil (+33% per year) and
Australia (+17% per year).
Indias top 5 trading partners in 2014 were Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab
Emirates, Bangladesh and Kuwait, with a combined 47% share of Indias rice
exports. The share of Iran increased significantly (+16 percentage points),
while the share of Bangladesh dropped sharply (-14 percentage points).
