TEMPERATURE CONTROL
INTRODUCTION
The temperature control system adjusts the environment in the
airplane, subdividing it into two temperature controlled zones: the
cockpit and the passenger cabin.
DESCRIPTION
The cockpit and the passenger cabin temperature control can operate
automatically or manually.
The automatic mode should be used in all normal conditions, and the
manual mode should be used as a back-up only if the automatic
mode experiences a failure.
Two subsystems make the automatic control of cockpit and passenger cabin. The two subsystems have the same components: a
digital controller, a dual temperature control valve, a compartment
temperature sensor (cockpit or cabin), a duct temperature sensor,
and a temperature selector (cockpit or cabin). In this mode the
temperature range is from 18oC (65oF) to 29oC (85oF).
A dual-channel temperature control make the manual temperature
control of cockpit and passenger cabin. The unit receives signals from
the duct temperature sensor and from the temperature selector.
The figure TEMPERATURE CONTROL - MAIN COMPONENT
LOCATIONS shows the location of the main components of the
system.

COMPONENTS
DUAL TEMPERATURE CONTROL VALVE
There are two Dual Temperature Control Valves (DTCV), one for each
refrigeration pack. The DTCV controls the temperature of the air at
the outlet of the refrigeration pack. The DTCV is electrically actuated.
It has two airflow control valves, a pneumatic actuator and mechanical linkages to connect them together. The valves and the actuator
are attached to a mounting plate.
With no input (0 mA) to the servo valve torque motor, the actuator
piston chamber is at zero pressure and the control spring holds the
piston in the fully retracted position. With the piston retracted, the
linkages and the butterfly valve discs are at one end of travel with the
throttle valve fully open and the bypass valve fully closed. The pack
outlet temperature is at the minimum level.
The two airflow control valves are both of the butterfly type. The
throttle valve controls the flow of air through the refrigeration section
of the pack to supply cool air to the distribution system. The bypass
valve controls the flow of controlled warm bleed air to the distribution
system.
When the supply current to the servo valve torque motor increases,
the torque motor opens the airflow to the actuator piston chamber.
When the air pressure is more than the spring force, the actuator,
linkage and valves begin to move. A supply current of 50 mA will
increase the pressure in the actuator piston chamber to 15 psig (the
level necessary to fully compress the spring and put the piston in its
fully extended position). At this point the throttle valve is fully closed,
the bypass valve is fully open and the pack outlet temperature is at
the maximum level.
If the current is between 0 and 50 mA, the servo valve will apply a
pressure between 0 and 15 psig in the actuator piston chamber. The
valves go to an intermediate position. The DTCV keeps approximately
the same airflow at the pack outlet, regardless of the selected
temperature.
This transfers the linear movement of the piston to the valves. The
diaphragm is attached to the crown of the piston and the actuator
body. It creates a chamber which is subject to variable air pressure
controlled by the servo valve.
An air transfer tube assembly connects the throttle valve body to the
servo valve. A relief valve on the throttle valve keeps the air flow
through the air transfer tube at a constant pressure. An electrical
connector on the mounting plate connects the servo valve and the
microswitch to the electrical system.
When the system is in AUTO mode, the valve receives an electrical
current signal from the digital temperature controller. When the system
is in MANUAL mode, the valve receives the signal from the
temperature control module.
EFFECTIVITY: ALL
There is one duct temperature sensor for each pack. Each sensor
sends a signal to the related digital temperature controller. Each one
also sends a signal to the temperature control module.
The duct temperature sensor has the same part number and properties of the ambient temperature sensor.
The figure TEMPERATURE CONTROL SYSTEM - COMPONENT
DETAILS shows the location of the DTCV and the duct temperature
sensor.

AMBIENT TEMPERATURE SENSOR
There are two ambient temperature sensors, one for the cockpit and
one for the passenger cabin. Each sensor sends a signal to the
related digital temperature controller. Each one also sends a signal to
the EICAS to show the related compartment temperature on the
MFD. The sensor consists of two thermistors in a housing with an
electrical connector.

There are two Digital Temperature Controllers (DTC), one for each

pedestal.
The DTC uses microcomputer-controlled, digital electronics to
produce a closed-loop analog signal to the torque motor dual valve.
The signal controls the position of the torque motor dual valve to
control the pack outlet temperature. Testing and program downloading can be done with external equipment through an RS422 data
link.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL MODULE
There is one Temperature Control Module (TCM) for the two refrigeration packs. It is installed in the cockpit, on the right console.
The Temperature Control Module (TCM) is the servoamplifier of a
closed-loop servomechanism that adjusts cabin and cockpit
temperature. The TCM is used during MANUAL mode operation. The
TCM has its own power supply.
The figure TEMPERATURE CONTROL SYSTEM - MODULE LOCATION shows the location of the unit.

OPERATION
AUTOMATIC MODE
There are two temperature control systems; one for each pack. The
crew can set the zone temperature between 18oC and 29oC (65oF
and 85oF).
The function of the temperature controller is to maintain compartment
air temperature at the selected value. The controller is an electronic
system that maintains selected ambient temperature by comparing
the sensed ambient temperature and selected ambient temperature
to produce an ambient temperature error.
This signal is used to produce a duct temperature reference which is
compared with sensed duct temperature to produce a duct
temperature error. This error signal is used to calculate a torque
motor command to drive an actuator which positions the dual valve to
reduce the temperature error to zero.
Excess crew pack flow is diverted to the passenger compartment.
The passenger compartment temperature controller has sufficient
authority to adjust its pack for proper temperature control. Air
conditioning pack discharge temperature is modulated by the dual
control valve. The butterfly valves of this component are operated in
unison through linkages using one actuator.
The linkages in the torque motor dual valve control the schedule of
the two valves. When one of the valves moves to its open position,
the other moves to its closed position. This keeps the total air flow
from the pack almost constant.
When the torque motor dual valve receives a signal that warmer air is
necessary:
The throttle valve moves to a more closed position which decreases
the flow of bleed air to the refrigeration components.
The bypass valve moves to a more open position which increases
the flow of warm bypass air to the mixer.
EFFECTIVITY: ALL
When the torque motor dual valve receives a signal that cooler air is
necessary, the valves operation is the opposite.
If the ambient temperature sensor or the temperature selector do not
operate, the DTC control logic will be as follows:
If the ambient sensor does not operate, the DTC will change to
duct temperature adjustment.
If the temperature selector does not operate, the DTC will set a
default value of 24oC (75oF).
If the ambient sensor and the selector do not operate, the DTC will
control the duct temperature to 42oC (107oF).
The DTC also sends discrete signals to the CMC in case of equipment failure in the automatic loop. The DTC can identify these equipment failures:
DTC itself.
Duct and ambient temperature sensors.
Dual valve torque motor. (POST-MOD. S.B. 145-21-0039)
Temperature selector.
MANUAL MODE
The crew can select manual mode and the position of the temperature
selector.
The difference between the measured temperature at the duct
temperature sensor and the reference duct temperature that is set by
the position of the temperature selector generates a signal at the
temperature control module. That signal controls the position of the
torque motor dual valve.
The temperature control module will provide a minimum duct
temperature limiting function 3oC (37oF) (anti-ice control) as well as a
maximum duct limiting function 71oC (160oF).
