Dr. William C.Y. Lee is Honorary Dean of School of Advanced Communications, Peking
University. He was Chairman of Treyspan, Inc., (2005-2007). He was Chairman of LinkAir
Communications, Inc. where he provided strategic direction to LinkAirs senior management
team from 2000-2005. He was Vice President and Chief Scientist of PacTel, then AirTouch,
then Vodafone-AirTouch from 1985-2000. He was Senior Scientist/Manager at ITT Defense
Division from 1979-1985 and was Senior Engineer at Bell Labs from 1964-1979.
Dr. Lee has published more than 300 articles and eight technical books on mobile
communications theory, cellular communications systems, propagation prediction tools and
CDMA theory. The book Mobile Cellular Telecommunications Systems published in 1989 was
the first cellular system book ever published in the cellular industry. Dr. Lee is the inventor of
Microcell, a leading technology that increases frequency reuse factors and boosts capacity by
250 percent. His seven patented Microcell System was deployed in Los Angeles and San Diego
in 1991. He holds more than 40 patents, with 2 more pending. He also assisted in CDMA
research and provided the spectrum for the initial trial of the technology for Qualcomm held in
San Diego in 1989.
Dr. Lee has been elected as an IEEE Fellow and has served as a member of numerous
Councils, including the California State Council on Science and Technology (Fellow). Now he
is the chair of Publicity of IEEE VTS. He has earned many prestigious industry awards including
the IEEE VTS Avant Garde Award, the CTIA Award, the CDMA Industry Achievement Award,
Bell Lab Appreciation Award and the IEEE Third Millennium Medal Award. He earned his
Masters in Science and Ph.D in EE from Ohio State University.
