Hallmarks of Cancer: Asia

Beijing, China
As one of the most investigated areas in biomedical
research, the cancer field is rapidly advancing
by translating biological insights towards better
detection and therapeutics, including molecular
classifications as well as immunotherapies. In
the era of the genetically informed, emerging
concepts in cancer biology and oncology research
are colliding into precision medicine. In order
to accelerate the development of personalized
cancer therapies and further translate fundamental
discoveries into the clinic, there must be open lines
of communication at the interface between the lab
and the clinic.

Roles of Type 2 Immunity
Bruges, Belgium

Stem Cell Energetics

Berkeley, CA, USA

Within the past few years, the concept of type

2 Immunity has broadened, both with regard
to inclusion of additional cellular players along
with their secreted factors as well as the biology
they mediate and how the players are regulated
themselves. The conference will discuss various
biologies mediated by this axis of the immune
response with a focus on identifying common
and disparate components. Cross fertilization
shall facilitate insights into this group of biological
responses in health and disease.

Growing evidence shows that cellular metabolism

underlies stem cell fate, including pluripotency,
differentiation and reprogramming. In addition to
generating ATP, through oxidative phosphorylation,
mitochondrial metabolism provides the building
blocks to support biomass, such as amino acid and
lipids, and is involved in cell signaling in determining
stem cell fate. Altered stem cell metabolism has
been implicated in aging and diseases, such
as cancer, and serves as a potential target for
therapeutic intervention.

Exercise Metabolism
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
As obesity, diabetes, and their metabolic sequelae
keep rising across the world, exercise is emerging
as an important determinant to maintain energy
balance. This meeting will explore the biology of
exercise from a whole-body perspective as to how
the body and brain adapt its metabolism during
exercise to the cellular level, looking at fuel use and
how exercise induces browning of white fat. We
will also explore other beneficial effects of exercise,
including protection against neurodegeneration and
whether it might be possible to generate exercise
in a pill.

Multifaceted Mitochondria
Chicago, IL, USA
Mitochondria perform diverse, yet interconnected
cellular functions and are dynamically regulated
by complex signaling pathways. Interest in this
fascinating organelle has recently undergone
a renaissance due to a series of discoveries
revealing that mitochondrial function goes beyond
the generation of molecular fuel. Mitochondria
also play a central role in thermogenesis and cell
death and influence an organisms physiology, as
well as its pathology. The driving forces behind
these discoveries have been in the development
of animal models, systems-based approaches,
and dynamic imaging techniques and are critical
in unravelling the significance and complexity of
mitochondrial behavior.
This symposium will capitalize on the growing
excitement on the diversity of mitochondrial
function and regulation. It will uniquely bring
together world-class leaders spanning the many
frontiers of mitochondrial research, including
their dynamics, roles in signaling, contributions
to physiology and disease, quality control and
degradation (mitophagy), and regulated metabolic
and bioenergetic functions. With this range of
topics, which examines mitochondria from a cell
biology, mechanistic, and disease perspective,
we aim to facilitate a wide-ranging discussion of
emerging themes in mitochondrial biology.

Cancer, Inflammation
and Immunity
Sitges, Spain
Tumors grow in close contact with immune cells, and
the crosstalk is complex and context dependent.
Researchers are rapidly expanding our knowledge of
how cancer can recruit inflammatory cells to support
malignant progression and suppress antitumor
immunity. We have learned that many immune cell
types such as macrophages and T cells can display
polarized phenotypes that act in favor of or against
cancer and that these states are plastic. The field of
cancer immunology is at an exciting place where
basic science is having tremendous translational
impact and cancer immunotherapy is at the brink of
mainstream clinical practice.

In recognition, Cell Press is pleased to announce

a symposium focused on inflammation and
immunity in cancer. We will bring academic and
industry researchers and clinicians together to
explore the many facets of cancer immunology
and discuss how tumor-associated inflammation
can be reprogrammed for therapeutic benefit. We
aim to foster discussion on recent findings in basic
immunology, cancer-immune cell interaction, and
new approaches in cancer immunotherapy.

Stem Cell Epigenetics

Sitges, Spain
Genome-wide studies of the epigenetic landscape
of stem cells continue to provide groundbreaking
insights into their unique characteristics. It is
becoming increasingly clear that epigenetic
regulation of stem cells occurs at multiple levels
and that harnessing knowledge of this complex
regulatory landscape is key to unlocking the
therapeutic potential of stem cell research.
We are excited to bring together experts who work
broadly over a diverse range of epigenetic topics
and stem cell types. We aim to provide a forum in
which interdisciplinary discussions will promote
cross-collaboration between experts in these areas
and spark new ideas that will accelerate progress in
the field.
The venue is ideal for promoting a high level of
interaction between speakers and attendees. We hope
you will join us in beautiful Sitges in September!

Human Immunity and

the Microbiome in
Health and Disease
Montral, Canada
The understanding of the human immune system
and its responses to perturbations remains a
considerable challenge to immunologists, in
large part due to the diverse genetic makeup and
environmental influence of individuals. Intersecting
with these two factors is the enormous and diverse
communities of microbes that colonize various
parts of the body. These microbes, described as our
microbiota, coevolve with us and coexist with our
immune system, eliciting a mutualistic response. In
advancing our immunological insights into diseases,
it has become clear that we also need to identify
the mechanisms that allow specific members of the
microbiota to modulate the hosts immune health.
From these studies, new connections between the
microbiota and the immune system are starting
to emerge. Disease states are often associated
with changes in the composition and behavior of
the microbiota, and this line of investigation will
unveil therapeutic potential to treat infections,
inflammatory diseases, and cancer.
We are excited to bring together leading scientists
to examine the interaction between the microbiota
and the human immune system and its responses.
We hope to spur progress in this area of research,
which will lead to novel strategies to promote
human health and to develop more effective ways
to treat diseases.

Engineering the Brain

SfN Satellite Symposium
Chicago, IL, USA
Recent technological advances from fields
as diverse as gene and protein engineering
to optics/photonics, chemistry, materials
science, nanoscience, electrophysiology and
more offer unprecedented opportunities for
measuring and manipulating neural cells and
circuits. Such technologies have helped propel
forward the already impressive strides made in
our understanding of the genetic, molecular,
and physiological mechanisms that contribute
to brain development and function. Developing
new technologies to probe the brain, as well as
approaches for managing complex emerging data,
will require concerted efforts and collaboration
across specialties.
We will bring together leading experts at the
forefront of neurotechnology development to
discuss the next generation of tools and methods
for understanding the brain.

Human Genomics
Singapore
Advances in sequencing technology have
revolutionized our ability to define the genetic
components of human health and disease, and
the accumulating data continue to refine our
understanding of the mechanisms underlying both
complex and Mendelian disorders. It is becoming
increasingly clear that diseases previously thought
of as uniform disorders, including cancer and many
psychiatric diseases, vary significantly from patient
to patient and that the heritability of disorders is
influenced by epigenetics and the environment. In light
of these complexities, genomic research and testing
are central to advancing personalized medicine.

8 -10
NOV
2015

The aim of this meeting is to bring together leading

researchers investigating a variety of aspects related
to human disease through genomic approaches,
share their findings, and offer insights on future
avenues for research and treatment. We will also
highlight some of the technological breakthroughs
that are pushing this field forward. We hope that
this symposium will foster discussion not only of the
findings that have already come from genomics but
also of the discoveries that are now within our reach.
We hope you will be able to join us at our first Cell
Symposium in Singapore in November 2015!

Cell Death and Immunity

Berkeley, CA, USA
How the immune system responds to dying cells
can be the difference between an effective, healing
response and one that provokes or exacerbates
pathology. Over the past few years, we have
witnessed important advances in our understanding
of different forms of cell death and their
consequences to immunity. At the molecular level,
an increasing number of connections between the
innate immune machinery and pathways involved
in autophagy and different forms of cell death have
been identified. The intersection between cell
death and immunity is an area of intense research,
with the potential to impact how we treat infectious
and inflammatory diseases and with implications
for vaccine development and diseases associated
with aging.

8-10
NOV
2015

This Cell Symposium will provide a unique

opportunity to bring together researchers in the
cell death and immunology communities, as well
as scientists studying host-pathogen interactions,
who are focused on understanding the molecular
and cellular mechanisms that link cell death and the
immune response. In addition to talks by invited
speakers, students and postdocs will have the
opportunity to present their work in short talks and
posters. We aim for a highly interactive meeting
that encourages lively discussions between young
investigators and established experts in the field.
