ticket. That was my first journey by air. It was 15th May. 2005. I arrived at the Zia
International airport about an hour before the (light. An air officer checked my ticket and
did all other formalities for the flight. There was a large number of people at the airport.
At about 8:30 a.m. I boarded the plane with other fellow passengers. When all the passengers
were in, the door was closed. As the plane was ready to take off,
the passengers were asked to fasten their seat belts by the captain. They were also given
instructions about what to do in case of emergency. As it was my first journey by air I felt a little bit
nervous at the beginning. But I got it over
after a short while. Soon the plane was flying high above the land at full speed towards
Chittagong. I looked through the window and saw the patches of clouds floating around

the plane. Houses and trees below looked like tiny toys. Rivers flowing below
appeared to
be thin lines drawn on a sheet of paper. I was lost in the midst of such amazing
situation. Suddenly it was announced that we were very close to the Chittagong
Amanat Shah airport
and we would be landing in a few minutes. I had no idea that the flight would be so
short.
Actually, the flight from Dhaka to Chittagong takes about 35 minutes. However, the
plane
began to come down and landed safely at the Chittagong Amanat Shah airport.
Thus my
first but enjoyable journey came to an end.

A Visit to A Market
Kamrul is always fond of going to the market. So yesterday when his mother told him to
get her some eggs, groceries and medicine, he carried out her orders gladly. Taking a bag
and some money, he cycled down to the nearest market. In the market, as usual, there were
a lot of activities going on in the shops. The hawkers seemed to be very busy doing good
business too. He bought some powdered chilli and a tin of soyabean oil from a grocers
shop and then went to a pharmacy to buy some medicine foi his father. Thinking he would
purchase the eggs at the end, he walked into the sweetmeats shop where a wonderful
aroma entered into his nostrils. He could not resist buying some hot jilapis,
which he devoured greedily. Then he went to the dairy shop and bought a packet of milk
and a dozen eggs. Taking his bicycle Irom the end of the road, he cycled for home hanging
the shopping hag with the handle. Reaching home, he gave back the remaining money to
mother. But mother jokingly remarked that since he had eaten Jilapis his stomach must
be full, so she neednt cook any dinner for him.

Then they spent some time in the childrens ward. They had brought sweets for the patients which
ihey distributed among the children. Some of the children
were so seriously ill that they could not eat. They felt really sorry for them. They talked to
them and tried to cheer them up. From there they were taken to the X-ray department, the
Surgical wing and the Pathology section. At last they attended a short lecture class on
general health. At one stage, Palash got separated from the group and while looking for his
friends he opened a door. It was a cabin where he saw a frail, old lady lying on the bed but
she did not look happy at all. He went up to her: Instead of getting angry at the invasion to
her privacy, she requested him to stay. Before taking leave he promised to come and see
her again. His visit to the hospital gave him a great experience indeed.

How Priyanka Spent Her Last Summer Vacation

A fortnight before the summer break, Priyanka stopped taking interest in studies. She and
her friends made an ambitious plan to visit some places. But man proposes and God
disposes. On the very first day. her mother slipped in the kitchen and broke her ankle. Her
whole leg was plastered and she was advised bed rest for three weeks. So Priyanka had to
do all household works. Even she had to cook food for the whole family.
She kept company with her mother, told her stories and tried to make her happy in every
manner. Besides, she had to take her to the bath-room, serve her food and change her
clothes. As no male member could help, she had to bear the burden alone. Whenever she
was to be carried to the bath-room, she had to be very careful about the plaster of the leg.
Three weeks were over. They had to carry her to the hospital to get the plaster cut. When
her mother was taken to the doctor for the second lime, the doctor told that the plaster was
to be repeated. Priyankas friends wrote from Rangamati that they were having nice time.
Her friends described the pleasant weather and their trek Osft) from. Rangamati to Coxs

A Rainy Day
It was the month of Shraban. The sky had been overcast with clouds for a few days with
occasional drizzles. On the 15th July, 2005 a heavy shower began at about
nine in the morning. As the downpour continued, the thought of going to school was out of
question. So I began to watch the sight through the window. What a sight it was! The
roads and streets were under knee-deep water. Almost all kinds of vehicles stopped moving and
lay standing aside. Only double-deckers
plied on, splashing water on all sides. The ripples they raised entered the
ground floors of many roadside houses and shops. Young children were floating paper
boats on the water accumulated on the streets. Some urchins enjoyed
themselves in swimming and sprinkling water in fun. Here and there were people
wading slowly through water with their clothes drawn up high above
the knees. The small park on the other side of our house was looking a vast sheet of water.
Water had entered most of the bustee houses and the inmates had taken shelter on the
wooden cots with their belongings. A few sheds had tumbled down altogether under the
heavy downpour. The rain stopped after about two hours but it took a long time more for
water to subside. All kinds of vehicles began to move again and people went about their
business with hurried steps.

Your Visit to the Zoo

It was January 10, 2005. I along with some of my friends paid a visit to the Mirpur Zoo.
The day was very nice. We started from our school at 2 P.M. and reached at the gate of the
zoo just at 2:30 P m. We bought tickets and entered the Zoo. At first we went to the
monkeys and saw them chattering and jumping from one bar to another. We threw some
peanuts to them and enjoyed how joyfully they had eaten them. Then we went near the
Royal Bengal Tigers. It was a well protected area. We saw several of the tigers in different
iron cages. They seemed to be ferocious and looked at us with their majesty. Next we went
near the lions. They were restless and were moving inside the cage with frequent roars that
were horrible and frightening. Our attention was then drawn to the place where there were
some beautiful deer with brown spots. Their big and beautiful eyes attracted me very
much. Next we went to the snakes, crocodiles, zebra and many other water and land
animals. At the end we visited the birds house where various kinds of birds were kept. It
took more than two hours to go round the entire zoo. We left the Zoo with a joyful heart
gathering some experience and knowledge about some birds and beasts that we visited.

filled his heart with joy. Early in the morning he woke his son up and went to the field
with their oxen to plough their land.
They ploughed some fields and planted the seeds on them. When the seedlings grew long
enough, Jamal and his son pulled them from the seedbeds and replanted them in another fields. In
a couple of weeks the fields were filled with rows of planted seedlings. In a few more weeks, the
seedlings grew and thrived. They often wenl to the fields to weed them. In a few months, the
paddy became ripe enough to be harvested. The paddy was then cut, tied into bundle and carried
home. The father and son then thrashed the paddy, dried it and put it into the barn. They got a
bumper harvest. So Jamal and his wife decided to marry their son.

A Clever Crow and a Foolish Dog

Once a dog stole a piece of meat from a butchers house. Running away with the meat in his
mouth he came to a garden. He then began to eat it sitting under a tree. Very soon there appeared
a crow on the tree. It felt tempted to have the meat. The crow was very cunning. It saw that it was
impossible for him to snatch the meat. So it hit upon a plan. It went out to look for its companion.
When it saw its companions it told him everything. Then they decided to play a trick on the dog.
When they returned to the previous spot, they saw that dog was still there. It also had the piece of
meat as earlier. Both the crows now went to the dog. Then one of them pulled the dog by his tail.
The dog was very disturbed. But it didnt leave the spot or put the meat on the ground. Then,
another crow bit the dog in his tail. This time the dog got furious. Being angry and annoyed, the
dog now dropped the piece of meat on the ground and looked back. The another crow tried to have
the meat but before he could have that the dog turned round. So he was failed.
But he was not disheartened. He again discussed with the another crow. They again started to play
the same trick on the dog. But the foolish dog could not realize what their plan was. So this time

when they again started to disturb it dropped the piece of meat on the ground and looked back. But
the crows went a little far. Seeing this, the dog chased the crow leaving the meat on the ground. In
a while, another crow flew away with the meat. The dog ran after the crows but in vain. This is how

Two Friend and the Bear

There lived tow friends in a certain village. They were very fond of traveling. They liked to enjoy the
beauty of nature, to see green trees, blue seas and to hear the sweet songs of birds. One day they
went to a forest for traveling. They were walking along with the path of forest. They were talking
about friendship. One time they entered the deep forest and lost their way. At that time, a terrible
incident happened. They saw a bear coming towards them. Both of them got frightened. They
began to think what to do to save themselves from the bear. Suddenly one of them remembered
that a bear can not climb a tree. At once he decided to climb up the nearby tree. He told that to the
other friend. But alas! The other friend did not know how to climb a tree. He requested the first
friend to take him with him. But the first friend saw that the bear was coming near. So, leaving the
friend in danger, he climbed up the tree. The second friend was in danger. He started to think what
he could do to save himself from the bear. Suddenly he remembered that he had read somewhere
that a bear never touches a dead body. He then hit upon a plan. So, to protect himself, he lay down
on the grass and acted as he was dead. The bear came near the lying friend. It smelt his nose and
ears and thought it to be a dead body. As the bear does not eat a dead body, he went way. The
other friend watched everything from the tree. When it went away, the another friend got down from
the tree and asked his friend, What did the bear say to you? in reply he said, A friend who leaves
his friend at the time of danger, is not a real friend. At this he was ashamed and went away.Title : A

The Fox And The Grapes

Once a fox became very hungry. He was passing through a garden in search of fruits. Soon
he stole into a vineyard. He looked upward and found some ripe grapes hanging from vines.
The grapes were too high for him to reach. Yet the fox could not resist his temptation of eating
the grapes. He felt greedy seeing the grapes. He wanted to have some of them by any means. He
began to think what to do. At first he tried to climb the tree to reach to the grapes. But he could not
succeed. He found no other means except jumping to reach the grapes. With a view to having the
grapes, he took run and jumped high to catch the nearest bunch of grapes. He made several
attempts but all were in vain. Each time he missed the juicy grapes. At last he became tired and
disappointed. He thus consoled himself saying that he did not really mean to have these grapes as
these grapes are sour indeed. From this story we can learn the lesson that one should not try to
achieve the things that are out of his reach. This very trying will give us only frustration and will
leave use in a disappointed condition. Title: Grapes are Sour.
A Thirsty Crow

It was the month of Chaitra. The day was very hot. There was scorching sun around. There
was no water anywhere. One day a crow grew thirsty. It flew here and there in search of
water, but in vain. So, it began to fly towards its nest. All the way it was looking for water. All the
watery places that came into its sight were dry due to the extreme heat of summer sun. It went to a
lake that was near its nest. To its utter dismay it found that the lake had also been dried up. It found
no other way to satisfy its thirst.
Losing heart when it returned to its nest, it saw a pitcher in a certain forest. Its heart leaped up in joy. It thought that it
could again make its thirsty throat wet with the drops of water. At once the crow landed there. But fortune was playing
tricks with it. It found that there was a little water inside the pitcher. The water was at the bottom. It was out of its reach.
It tried again and again to turn the pitcher. But all his attempts were ended in smoke. It could not turn the pitcher so
couldnt drink water also. It gave up its hope of drinking water. Being disappointed, the crow prepared to go away.
Suddenly it noticed a heap of pebbles near the pitcher. An idea came to its mind. It thought that if it could put the
pebbles into the pitcher then the water might rise high and it could drink the water. It began to take the pebbles into its
beak and dropped them inside the pitcher. As it put the pebbles, the water rose high and high. At length the water
came to its reach. The crow drank its full and flew away with a happy mind.

The Cowboy and The Wolf

There was a cowboy in a village. He used to tend cows in a nearby field beside the forest. The
cowboy was a great liar. He enjoyed himself making fun with people. He often cried out, Wolf,
wolf. The farmers who used to work in nearby field thought that really a wolf was appeared. So,
they all rushed to the spot to kill the wolf and save the boy. But each time they were deceived.
When they reached the spot they found there was no wolf but the boy. When the farmers could
find no wolf, the boy giggled and made fun with them. This happened for more than three times. At
last the farmers got angry and decided not to come anymore to help the boy. One day a wolf really
came. The boy was as usually tending the cattle. He never saw a wolf in his life. But now when he
saw the wolf he was horrified. The wolf was so fierce looking that he forgot to run. In fact he felt
himself unable to move. He could not think of anything to do. He thought of shouting to ask help
from the others. So, the boy now shouted aloud to his capacity. He cried for help. But this time
there was no response. The farmers were working in a nearby field. They heard the sound. But
they thought that the boy was again making fun as usual with them. This time the wolf found the
cowboy alone and tore him to pieces. The liar cowboy was thus punished for his lie. Title : Nobody

An old farmer & his sons

An old farmer had four sons. They used to quarrel with one another. One day the farmer called his
sons to bring some sticks and tie them in a bundle. He told them to break the bundle. They tried
but could not succeed. Then the old farmer smiled but the sons didnt understand the meaning of
his smile. They were surprised to see him smiling and asked him the reason of his smile. The
farmer didnt answer to that question. He told them to untie the bundle. The sons did accordingly.
The farmer took the sticks in his hand and gave them to his sons. He told them, Now try to break
these sticks one by one. This time each of them could break the sticks easily. The farmer then
told his sons if they were separated like the sticks they could be easily defeated. But if they were
united like the bundle of the sticks in his absence, nobody would be able to do any harm to them.
He advised them to live together in peace and amity. The sons also understood what their father
had tried to teach them. They became ashamed of their past misbehavior and promised to follow

A hare and a tortoise
One day a hare met a tortoise. He laughed at the tortoise and said, You have as many legs as I
have. But I am sure; you cant run as fast as I can. Perhaps, you cant run at all. The tortoise
became very angry. He answered quietly, You can run quite fast, no doubt. But I think, you can
talk even faster than you can run. However I agree to run a five mile race with you. At this the
hare was much amused. So she said, Come along, lets fixed a date for the race. They fixed a
date. A fox came to see the race. The fox was selected as judge. The tortoise and the hare came
to the starting point. The race began. The hare began to run very fast. She jumped and jumped.

She ran a mile in a few minutes. Soon she found the tortoise far behind her. Then she stopped.
She said to herself, Whats the use of going so fast? Perhaps, the tortoise has gone only a few
yards by this time. So I can very well have a good sleep before he comes up. Saying this, the hare
went to sleep in a bush. In the meantime the tortoise walked on and on. He did not stop anywhere.
When he came to the bush, he saw the lazy hare lying fast asleep. He smiled and quietly passed
by her. Many hours passed. The hare woke up. She saw that it was already evening. She
immediately got on her feet. She began to run very fast. But alas! The tortoise had already gone
far. She came in sight of the goal. But the tortoise was already crossing the winning post. The hare
felt much ashamed. She now said to herself, It is true that slow and steady wins the race.

Grapes are Sour

Once a fox became very hungry. He was passing through a garden in

search of fruits. Soon he stole into a vineyard. He looked upward and
found some ripe grapes hanging from vines. The grapes were too high
for him to reach. Yet the fox could not resist his temptation of eating the grapes. He felt greedy
seeing the grapes. He wanted to have some of them by any means. He began to think what to do. At first he
tried to climb the tree to reach to the grapes. But he could not succeed. He found no other means except
jumping to reach the grapes. With a view to having the grapes, he took run and jumped high to catch the
nearest bunch of grapes. He made several attempts but all were in vain. Each time he missed the juicy
grapes. At last he became tired and disappointed. He thus consoled himself saying that he did not really
mean to have these grapes as these grapes are sour indeed. From this story we can learn the lesson that
one should not try to achieve the things that are out of his reach. This very trying will give us only frustration
and will leave use in a disappointed condition.

A Fox without a Tail

Once upon a time, there lived a very clever fox. He lived in a jungle. One day, when the fox walking through
the jungle, he fell into a trap. He tried his best to get free. Finally, he landed on his tail. When he got out of
the trap, he left his tail behind which he had lost in the struggle. Without his tail the fox looked very strange.
He felt sad and ashamed too. He knew that every fox would laugh at him. He was so sad that he thought of
killing himself. But then he said to himself, It is cowardice to kill one self. I should do something else. So
he thought out a cunning plan. He planned to persuade all the foxes to part with their tails. He was sure to
divert their attention from his tailless appearance. He thought that if he could make them understand that
there was no need of tails they might have also cut their own tails.
So, he called all the foxes in a meeting. When all the foxes came, he told them they did not need any tail.
According to him the tail was not only useless but also ugly. So he asked all the foxes to cut their tail. Then an
old clever fox realized his trick. He stood up and said, Good, sir! You wouldnt be so keen to give us that
advice, if you were not tail less, isnt it? He revealed his trick to other foxes. Then the tailless fox ran away

Unity Is Strength
An old farmer had four sons. They used to quarrel with one another. One day the farmer called his sons to
bring some sticks and tie them in a bundle. He told them to break the bundle. They tried but could not
succeed. Then the old farmer smiled but the sons didnt understand the meaning of his smile. They were
surprised to see him smiling and asked him the reason of his smile. The farmer didnt answer to that question.
He told them to untie the bundle. The sons did accordingly. The farmer took the sticks in his hand and gave
them to his sons. He told them, Now try to break these sticks one by one. This time each of them could
break the sticks easily. The farmer then told his sons if they were separated like the sticks they could be easily
defeated. But if they were united like the bundle of the sticks in his absence, nobody would be able to do any
harm to them. He advised them to live together in peace and amity. The sons also understood what their
father had tried to teach them. They became ashamed of their past misbehavior and promised to follow the
advice of their father.

Robert Bruce And The Spider

king fought bravely but lost the battle. He wished to regain his kingdom at any cost. He made six attempts

from the war field and took shelter in a cave. He kept himself there hidden.
One day he was lying there in a pensive mood. He was thinking about his lost kingdom. He was making
plans after plans how to regain his kingdom. But none of them seemed appropriate to him. So he was in a
little bit melancholic mood. Then he could see a spider trying to reach the ceiling of the cave. At first he
didnt pay any attention to this. But gradually it drew his attention. He saw that the spider failed repeatedly.
But still it didnt give up hope. The king began to count how many times it was failed to reach the ceiling. The
king found that the spider became successful to climb up the ceiling of the roof by the seventh attempt. The
king found out a kind of similarity between him and the spider. He saw that like the spider he was also failed
for six times to regain his kingdom. Now a hope began to rise up in his mind. He thought if he would make
another more attempt he might win like the spider which had won its goal at its seventh attempt. He felt

A Little Knowledge Is A Dangerous Thing

The well known proverb has a deep meaning in it. It warns us against the danger of shallow knowledge. So a man with
little learning poses to be a vast learned man and behaves in the most artificial way. He always talks big and wants to
prove himself a man of letters. He brings no good to the society. He does more harm than good. He does not care for
the others' opinion. He is not headed and unsober. He always boasts of his learning. He with his shallow knowledge
leads man in the wrong path. However, he is a laughing stock before a circle of real educated persons. On the other
hand, a learned man is sober, soft and sound. He is polite and gentle in his manner. He never boasts of his learning.
He does not talk much. He attracts one to all with the depth of his knowledge. He has the strength of mind and brain.
The more he learns, the more he feels that he has learnt a little. He has many things to learn. He thinks that he is an
iota in the ocean of knowledge. But a man of little learning does not think so. He thinks that he has learnt a lot. So we
should be aware of this kind of man.

his plan to his wife. His wife said, Dear, are you mad? Dont do this. If you dont get any eggs after killing
the goose then we will lose all what we are getting now. So have patience and be satisfied with what you
have. But the farmer couldnt check his temptation. That night he was building castle in the air thinking
what he would do with the money that he would get by selling the golden eggs after killing the goose. He
planned to buy a new house and some lands. He was thinking how luxuriously he would lead his life. Next
morning he got up very early. He took a sharp knife and went to kill the goose. The farmers wife forbade
him again and again. But the farmer didnt pay any heed. He took the knife and cut open the belly. But alas!
He found no egg at all in it. The goose died at once. The farmer became speechless for a few moments. He
could not believe his own eyes. Slowly he understood what he had done. He understood that with the goose
he had also lost the prospect of golden eggs. He could understand that he was ruined. He burst into

sobbing. He wife tried to console him saying, I told you not to be greedy. Now you can see for your
greediness we have lost everything. Thats why people say, Greed begets sin, sin begets death.

The Noble Man And The Grand House

One day a farmer was taking some sacks of wheat to a mill. The mill was a few kilometers away. On the
way the horse stumbled and one of the sacks fell to the ground. It was too heavy for the farmer to lift and
there was nobody around to help him. He was at a loss. Meanwhile he saw a horseman coming towards
him.
The farmer became very joyous. He thought he could lift it with the help of the stranger. So he got ready to
ask help from the stranger. But alas! As the rider was coming nearer, his face grew darker and darker with
sadness. The farmer could recognize him. He was no other than the nobleman who lived in a great house at
the top of the hill. The farmer thought if he asked the noble mans help then the noble man would think that
he was insulting him. The farmer decided that he would not ask him to help him to lift the sack. He became
more frustrated.
But as the horseman came to him, he could realize his problem. He stood before the farmer and said, My
friend, I see you have a mishap. Fortunately, I have come in this way. Because it is really difficult to get any
help here, saying this he came down from his horse and offered help to lift the sack. Then both of them
held the two ends of the sack and lifted the sack on the horses back. The farmer was naturally very
grateful. He said to the noble man, My Lord, how can I thank you? the noble man smiled and said, You
can do it very easily my friend. Whenever you see somebody in problem, try your best to help him and that
will be helping me. Then the noble man went away leaving the farmer alone.

price of fine rice was Tk.- 24 per kg. while that of masur pulse was Tk.-48 per kg. Yesterday. It shows that
market prices of these two staple foods have gone up by Tk.- 6 per kilo during last week.
