Back to school smiles

After an early injury

ended his senior season,
MHS grad Quinton Law
makes the football roster
at Bryant University
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Heading into the first game of
the 2014 season, Moorestown
High School senior wide receiver
and defensive back Quinton Law
had a bright future in football.
Law was a three-year varsity
player and was drawing interest
from a number of Division I
schools. He accepted a scholarship offer from Bryant University
in Smithfield, R.I., prior to the
start of his senior year and was
excited to play one final season
with his hometown friends.
However, Laws plans were derailed in the first quarter of the
season opener against Winslow.
Law was hit with a block from
the back and twisted his right
knee. The injury looked minor,

MHS volleyball team annual car wash fundraiser is Sept. 20
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Moorestown High School girls
volleyball is a team on and off the
court. It works together to defeat
opponents as well as comes together for special causes and occasions, such as its carwash
fundraiser this Sunday.
The carwash will be held on

Sunday, Sept. 20 from noon to 4

p.m. at the William Allen Middle
School parking lot, 801 N. Stanwick Road. The carwash is generally $5 per car and the girls work
together to clean each car by
hand.
It is a nice experience and
quick way to knock a chore off
your list. Youll see a bunch of
smiling faces that will uplift your
weekend, and also help out the
girls in the process, Laura Coelho, carwash committee chair,
said.
The MHS girls volleyball team
has held this fundraiser for years.
This year, the girls are trying to
raise money for some much-needed items, such as two college
scholarships for graduating seniors, one for leadership and the
other for spirit, Senior Night,
team uniforms, a new net and

some other equipment.

This fundraiser is the main
source of revenue for the team,
making it easier on parents and
players so they dont have to
worry about paying for things
such as uniforms and equipment,
as the school doesnt fund those
items.
There is always a list of
things that the team needs, and
this carwash is where the money
comes from, Coelho said.
All the volleyball team girls,
freshman through senior varsity,
will be participating in the carwash. The girls will be selling
tickets for the fundraiser, so people may approach any of the players to get one. However, people
who are interested in helping the
team and dont know any of the

Going green in a big way

Sustainable Moorestowns Green Team plans inaugural
Green Giant green fair and rummage sale for Sept. 26
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
As one of its first acts as a permanent committee, Sustainable
Moorestowns Green Team is
hosting a green fair and rummage sale called the Green Giant
in collaboration with residents,
community church groups and
non-profit organizations.
The Green Giant, Green Fair
and Epic Rummage Sale will take
place on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Strawbridge
Lake Playground, on South
Church Street and Haines Drive.
The fair will have green education and demos, featuring the
NASA Geoscience Remote Sensing Mobile Lab. The rummage
sale will be local vendors selling
used or repurposed items, all in

the name of sustainability.

Our Green Fair and Epic
Rummage Sale will be an opportunity for residents to learn more
about sustainability, and how the
many township programs and
non-profit organizations share in
meeting the goal of enhancing
and preserving our way of life
that weve come to enjoy in
Moorestown, Green Team Chair
Wolf Skacel said. It is a commu-

nity-wide event that brings together township programs, volunteer

groups,
non-profits,
churches and the business community to embrace sustainability.
Sustainable
Moorestowns
Green Team has been talking
about hosting this Green Giant
for months before it was named a
permanent committee in town in
early August. As part of its commitment to the Sustainable Jersey program, sustainable teams
must complete certain actions
that award the community points
for completing each task, a green
fair being one of them.

Fresh approach to betting needed

Its time for Congress to take the lead in legalizing sports betting

battle in court to allow legalized sports betting in the
state. But new research shows that legalizing and regulating sports betting would be very beneficial to our
economy.
The American Gaming Association
last week estimated that Americans
will bet $95 billion on the National
Football League and college football
this season, and less than 4 percent of
that is expected to be wagered legally.
Illegal sports betting is reaching
new heights of popularity in America, said Geoff Freeman, the president and CEO of the Association. Its
clear that a federal ban on traditional
sports betting outside of Nevada is
failing.

like the one conducted in Nevada
would produce $12.4 billion in annual
revenue. To put that in perspective,
that would be more than the estimated
$12 billion in revenue the entire NFL
is expected to generate this year!
So whats the hold-up? For one, it
seems New Jerseys avenue of pursuing a lift of a federal ban on sports betting outside four states through court
isnt going to work. However, it has
brought to light a lot of pertinent issues, and benefits of changing the federal law. But that needs to happen at

the congressional level, not in court.

The heads of both the NBA and
MLB have said there needs to be a
fresh approach to sports betting.
Clearly, Americans are betting on
sports in widespread fashion, whether
the way they are doing it is legal.
Sports betting is not only commonplace, its no longer taboo.
Walk into your favorite chain bookstore or supermart, and youll find
sports betting guides in the magazine
aisle. Heck, ESPN the worldwide
leader in sports even started an entire section of its website dedicated to
covering the sports betting landscape
and providing bettors with advice.
The time is now to change the way
our country handles sports betting.
We are letting too much money fall
through our fingers at a time when we
need every cent we can get.

tainable Jersey program. Out of

the 428 communities participating in Sustainable Jersey, there
are only 28 at the Silver level. The
team achieved this level in many
ways, including a Green Roof
on the new municipal building
designed to capture stormwater
and reduce its flow and reducing
temperature extremes on that
portion of the building; managing the bio-retention basin in
front of the new library as a
monarch way station, in cooperation with STEM; and installing
hiking signs throughout the
township to promote use of open
spaces.
Having the Green Giant event
helps to keep Moorestown at the
Silver level.
However,
Sustainable
Moorestowns Green Team couldnt take all of the credit.
Community groups and nonprofits in town do a lot of things
in Moorestown. Here, they can
show how what they do ties into
environmental or sustainability
concepts, let people know what is
going on; and there is a lot going
on, communication volunteer
Candace Coleman said.
The Green Fair will have information on a number of new hybrid vehicles and electric powered vehicles; whats appropriate
to recycle and whats not; and information on quite a number of
township committees and nonprofits.
We will have a comprehensive
display of items that should be recycled and those that should not,
Skacel said.
Also scheduled for the Green
Fair is Palmyra Coves newly acquired NASA Geoscience Remote
Sensing Mobile Lab, which will
provide hands-on demonstrations of solar and wind energy as

well as remote sensing, satellites

and computer visualizations.
It is a wonderful thing, especially for kids, to see, Coleman
said.
The rummage sale part of the
Green Giant is a repurposing
event that will include used and
repurposed items for sale from
various homeowners, church
groups and organizations. It allows anyone to be sustainable and
go green.
The rummage sale is the ultimate way to repurpose things. It
is the best way to keep things out
of landfills. Its a way that anyone
can be green. You dont need an
environmental background. This
is making it so someone else can
use it and give it a new life somewhere else, Coleman said.
Food vendors, vendors with a
focus on sustainability, residents,
churches and non-profit organizations are invited to participate.
Items for sale at the rummage

sale are limited to used and repurposed items. Vendor applications are available at www.sustainablemoorestown.org. Submit
registrations to sustainablemoorestown@moorestown.nj.us,
or register with one of the area
churches participating in the
event. The deadline for vendors is
Friday, Sept. 18.
The event will take place rain
or shine.
I hope that residents walk
away with a better understanding
of the concept of sustainability
and how each person, township
committee, area churches and
non-profits contribute toward ensuring that Moorestown remains
a vibrant and engaged community. And most importantly, that
they have a good time, Skacel
said.
Lockheed Martin will also host
a Hazardous Waste Disposal
event at 199 Borton Landing

1 p.m. the same day.

Bryant opens season with 273 win over American International

BRYANT
Continued from page 1
and Law was able to play through
the rest of the game. When he
went to the doctors afterward,
however, Law discovered he had
chipped the cartilage in his knee
and would need to have microfracture surgery. His senior
season was over, and suddenly,
there was doubt whether he
would play in college.
I couldnt believe it, Law
said. We just thought it was a
sprain or at the most a torn LCL
where I could get back at the end
of the season.
Upon news of his injury, nearly
all of the colleges interested in
Law disappeared. One college decided to keep in touch.
I actually lost contact with
every other school except
Bryant, he said. I didnt know
what to expect, but they stuck

with me.
Despite the injury, Bryant kept
its scholarship offer to Law on the
table. Law knew he wouldnt play
football in high school again, but
he had a new goal. He was going
to go to Bryant, come back from
his knee injury and take the field
for the Bulldogs.
The journey was not going to
be easy. Doctors estimated the
earliest Law would be able to recover was mid-April, seven
months after he suffered the injury. Following surgery, Law had
to go through weeks of therapy
with a continuous passive motion
machine. The CPM machine
would work Laws knee back into
shape with flexing and waving
repetitions.
As he began his recovery, Law
continued to attend Moorestown
football games and act as a leader
on the sidelines. It was a tough
season for the Quakers. After
beating Winslow in the only game
Law played on opening night,

Quinton Law (middle) runs back an interception for a touchdown for

Moorestown during a 2013 game against Cherry Hill West. Law has
worked his way back from a major knee injury during his senior year
at Moorestown to make it to training camp at Bryant University. He
hopes to be cleared to play in games in the coming weeks.
Moorestown lost all nine of its remaining games. Law felt helpless
as he watched Moorestown stumble through the season from the
sidelines.
It may be the toughest thing
that happened to me, he said. I
spent most of high school putting
so much into football. It was a disappointing year. We were plagued
by injuries. I thought we needed
leadership, and a lot of our leaders got hurt.
The season ended in mid-November, but Law kept working.
After he got off crutches, he
began going to physical therapy
three times a week at the
Moorestown Field House.
We started running in an un-

derwater treadmill, Law said. I

couldnt run on land yet. We slowly progressed into the regular
treadmill.
The seasons changed from winter to spring, and it was nearly
summer before Law could even
think about doing football-specific workouts. A big reason for his
lengthy recovery was the amount
of time it took to get proper stability and balance in his knee.
It took quite some time for the
knee to heal up so I could do some
strengthening exercises, he said.
My legs looked completely different. One looked like it was
used and one had no muscle.
Because of the injury, Law was
originally going to arrive at

Bryants football training camp

late. However, after a visit from
the athletic trainer in June, he
was cleared to arrive at camp on
time.
During training camp, Laws
knee didnt give him many problems. His knee swelled once, causing him to miss a day of practice,
but he has otherwise been on the
field every day. The biggest challenge for him now is getting back
into game shape.
I might be the only person on
the team to not play football last
year, he said. Its hard to simulate or train a football game.
Bryant opened its season on
Sept. 5 with a 27-3 win over American International. Law was not
able to dress for the game, as he is
still working his way back into
game shape. Theres a chance
Law may be redshirted for this
year, meaning he would sit out
the entire 2015 season, but the
season wouldnt count against the
maximum four seasons NCAA
athletes can compete in.
However, Law doesnt want to
wait another year to play in a
game. His goal is to get on the active roster as soon as possible and
make enough of an impression to
make the away game roster and
maybe even get some playing time
on special teams. Law feels he can
be a starting cornerback for the
Bulldogs in the coming years.
Thats my goal is to get on the
travel team and go up and down
the east coast for away games
with the team, he said.

All auction items are crab-themed

ALL
Continued from page 2
At Crab Feast and So Much
More! there will be musical entertainment, a photo booth, a
crab auction and, of course,
food and drink.
Musical entertainment will be
provided by a DJ playing a variety of music from the 50s to today.
For the auction, items all have
a crab theme and are valued from

$100 to $150, and sometimes more.

The auction will work like a Chinese auction with raffle tickets.
The complete crabby menu
from Georgettis will offer attendees a wide variety of hors doeuvres, entrees and desserts, including some from the land. Examples include crab cakes, clams
casino, spring chicken, roast top
round beef, rigatoni, cannolis and
cheesecake.
The annual event sells out
quickly.
I hope people come out, enjoy

themselves and have a great time.

But more importantly, know they
made an important contribution
to our mission, and by doing so,
they end up helping a lot of people, Blackwell said.
If you cannot attend the event
but would like to support MEND,
donations in any amount are welcomed. Additionally, sponsorships are available.
Further details can be found at
www.mendinc.org/mends-annual-gala-2015/ or by calling the offices at (856) 722-7070 ext. 19.
