(b). An American roulette wheel contains 38 numbers of which 18
are red, 18 are black and 2 are green. When the roulette wheel is
spin, the ball is equally likely to land on any of the 38 numbers. In
three plays at the roulette wheel,
(i).What is the probability that the ball lands on green the first
time, on red the second and third times. (2 points)

(ii). What is the probability that the ball lands on green the first
time, on black the second and third times. (2 points)
(iii). What is the probability that the ball lands on green the first,
second and third times. (2 points)
(iv). What is the probability that the ball lands on black the first,
second and third times. (2 points)
(v). What is the probability that the ball lands on red the first,
second and third times. (2 points)

QUESTION 2.
(a).A card is selected randomly from an ordinary deck of 52
cards. What is the probability of getting?
(i). A queen? (3 points)
(ii). A diamond? (3 points)
(iii). A black card? (3 points)
(iv).A pictured card (A face card)? (3 points)
(v).The king of clubs? (3 points)

(b). A wheel of fortune has the numbers 1 through 50 painted on
it. Tickets numbered 1 through 50 have been sold. The wheel will
be rotated and the number on which the pointer lands will be the
winning number. If the pointer stops on the line between two
numbers, the wheel must be turned again. A prize of a new car
will be awarded to the person whose ticket number matches the
winning number. What is the probability that

(i).Ticket number 42 wins? (2 points)

(ii). Ticket number 25, 30 or 35 wins? (2 points)
(iii). A ticket between the numbers 26 and 39 wins? (2 points)
(iv).An even numbered ticket wins? (2 points)
(v).Ticket number 51wins? (2 points)

QUESTION 3.
(a).Two fair dice are rolled at the same time and the number of
dots appearing on both dice is counted.
(i). Make a table to represent the sample space for this pair of
dice. (5 points)
(ii). Find the probability that the sum is 7. (2 points)
(iii). Find the probability that the sum is an odd number larger
than 6. (2 points)
(iv). Find the probability that the sum is less than 2. (2 points)
(v). Find the probability that the sum is more than 12. (2 points)
(vi). Find the probability that the sum is between 2 and 12
inclusive. ( 2 points)

(b).Three guys Kojo, Mensah and Jack were required to fire and
hit a target once as part of their Military training in order to join
the forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The probability that Kojo,
Mensah and Jack hit the target are 1/2, 1/5 and 3/4 respectively.
Find the following.

(i).The probability that none of the three guys hit the target. (2.5
points)
(ii). The probability that all the three guys hit the target. (2.5
points)
(iii). The probability that exactly two of the guys hit the target.
(2.5 points)
(iv). The probability that at least one guy hit the target. (2.5
points)

QUESTION 4
(a). If in an experiment is conducted, one and only one of the
three mutually exclusive events A1, A2, and A3 can occur with
these probabilities. P(A1)=0.2
P (A2) =0.5 and P(A3)=0.3.
The probability of a fourth event B occurring, given that events A 1,
A2, or A3 occurs are P(B|A1)=0.2
P(B|A2)=0.1
P(B|A3)=0.3
(i). Find P(B). (2.5 points)
(ii). Find P(A1|B). (2.5 points)
(iii). Find P(A2|B). (2.5 points)
(iv). Find P(A3|B). (2.5 points)
(b).A recent test conducted by the Federal Aviation
Administration found that guards hired to screen passengers for
weapons at the boarding gate had a very poor rate of detection.
The detection rates for weapons carried by F.A.A inspectors or
placed in their carry-on-luggage averaged 80%, but the rates
varied from 34% to 99% for inspectors tested (New York Times,

June 18, 1987). Suppose that in a particular city, airport A handles

50% of all airline traffic, while airport B and C handle 30% and
20%, respectively. The detection rates at the three airports are
0.9, 0.5 and 0.4 respectively. If a passenger is carrying a weapon
through the boarding gates of one of the airports find
(i). The probability that the weapon will be detected. (3 points)
(ii). The probability that the weapon will be detected at airport A.
(4 points)
(iii). The probability that the weapon will be detected at airport B.
(4 points)
(iv). The probability that the weapon will be detected at airport C.
(4 points)
Note: This is a take home midterm exam. This exam is only on
the material of section C of your class lecture notes. Please be
advised that you are supposed to follow all the necessary steps
and procedures to enable you arrive at the final answer. Dont just
give me the answers because mathematics is not just about
answer; it is about how you arrived at the answers. This midterm
per say is not difficult, but if you dont follow the steps you will
not end up getting the full credit. Thank you for your co-operation
and understanding.
