1. Abstract : Dengue Fever

Introduction:
Falling sick getting fever, and getting well again might be fine in some of
the cases. But fever does not get well in all the situations, especially if it is a
symptom of dengue fever. Yes panic not, but we need to know the causes
and symptoms to reduce the risk of this disease.
Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF):
Is a disorder: that tends to influence children under age ten. DHF
starts with high continuous fever and headache and causes abdominal
pain, hemorrhage (bleeding), and circulatory collapse including
respiratory and intestinal symptoms.
In this disease, there is bleeding with blood spots in the skin spitting
up blood, blood in the stool, bleeding gums, and nosebleeds. Dengue
hemorrhagic fever is a more extreme form of the viral illness.
Symptoms are headache, fever, rash, and evidence of hemorrhage in
the body.

Patients with DHF must be taken care for the first few days since
shock may occur or recur suddenly (dengue shock syndrome).
Vascular collapse (shock) requires immediate fluid replacement.

The mortality (death) rate with DHF is significant. Most deaths occur
in youngsters. Children under a year of age are especially at risk of
dying from DHF.

Other signs of dengue fever are bleeding gums, severe pain behind the
eyes, and red palms and soles.

Dengue has various names,

Victims of dengue often had contortions due to intense joint and
muscle pain so it is also known as break bone.
In the West Indies slaves, who contracted dengue were said to have
dandy fever because of their postures and walk.

2. Causes of dengue fever contraction/The

mosquito:

The virus is contracted from the bites of mosquitoes that belong to

the Aedes egypti species that has earlier bitten an infected person.
The mosquito is seen during the rainy seasons but can breed in waterfilled flower pots, plastic bags, and cans throughout the year.
The virus is not infectious and cannot be spread directly from person
to person. One mosquito bite can cause the disease.
It is viral disease, transmitted by mosquitoes, which leads to fever and
acute pains in the joints. Dengue fever is an ailment caused by
infection with a sort of virus called Flavivirus.

Usually, its incidence has been on the rise in Asian countries like
India.

3. Symptoms and signs:

After being bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus, Pain in the legs
and joints occurs during the first hours of illness.
Normally, in case of dengue fever symptoms are severe joint and
muscle pain, headache, fever, exhaustion, swollen lymph nodes, and
rash. The temperature rises quickly as high with low heart rate
(bradycardia) and low blood pressure. The eyes become reddened.
A flushing or pale pink rash is seen over the face and then disappears.
The lymph nodes in the neck and groin are often swollen.
After two to four days, there is a rapid drop in body temperature with
profuse sweating. This follows by a period with normal temperature
and a feeling of well-being that lasts about a day.
A second rapid rise in temperature follows. A characteristic rash
appears along with the fever to cover the entire body except the face.
The palms and soles might be red and swollen.

4. Treatments and Prevention for Dengue Fever:

How is dengue fever diagnosed?
The diagnosis of dengue fever is usually made when symptoms like
headache, fever, eye pain, severe muscle aches, and rash are seen and has a
history of being in an area where dengue fever is prevalent. Dengue fever
can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are same as those of
many other viral illnesses, like chikungunya fever.
Prognosis for typical dengue fever:
Dengue is deadly in less than 1% of cases. It is accompanied by a feeling of
weakness (asthenia), and full recovery often takes several weeks.
Symptoms and
Signs
The ailment usually shows itself as fever with severe body
pain or myalgia.
Joint pain is another symptom though there may not be genuine
arthritis.

Related symptoms include severe headache, vomiting, and

photophobia. Examination of the patient may reveal few findings
such as a rash and pain on palpation of the muscles.
These symptoms normally last for a time period of two to five days
and most patients who do not have complications recover totally.
Examinations and Diagnosis
Blood tests may show a low white blood cell count, a low platelet number,
increase of certain biological catalysts.
The definitive diagnosis, on other hand, is made by separating the infection
in the blood amid the intense period of the illness or by detecting
antibodies to the infection in the blood. A rise in the antibody titre is a
useful method of diagnosis. Investigations also need to be done to find out
other causes of fever like for example malaria and leptospirosis.
Treatment and Prognosis for dengue fever:
Because dengue fever is caused by a virus, there is no specific medicine or
antibiotic to treat it. For normal dengue fever, the treatment is given for the
relief according to symptoms. The treatment is concerned with relief of the
symptoms. Aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should only
be taken under a doctor's supervision because of the risk of excessive
bleeding complications. Acetaminophen and codeine may be given for
severe headache and for joint and muscle pain.
Analgesics, anti-pyretic, and broad-spectrum antibiotics are used during
the acute phase to minimize the risk of secondary infection. In instances of
bleeding, blood transfusions are needed. Shock, if present, needs to be

aggressively treated with liquids, oxygen, and close observing. Rest and
fluid intake for hydration is important.

Prevention
Control and elimination of mosquito population is the best strategy of
prevention. An immunization is in the late stages of development but is still
not available for business use on a large scale. We should keep our
environment clean.
