Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Foster H.

George
Foster H. George, 92, Lincoln, Neb., was called to his final duty station
on Monday (3/1/10).

Foster Hull George was born March 8, 1917 in Pelham, New York to
Harry Lee George and the former Mary Hull. The second of nine
children, he grew up in Brooklyn, NY, graduated from high school and
was drafted in 1943 by the United States Army. He proudly served his
country for the next 30 years as a combat engineer with assignments at
Ft Dix, NJ; Ft. Belvoir, VA; Fort Lewis, WA; Michigan Tech University
ROTC, Houghton, MI; and two tours in Germany. In addition, he
deployed twice to Korea and once to Vietnam.

After serving as CSM of the 138th Engineer Group at Fort Riley, Kansas, he retired in 1973 as a
decorated Army veteran. Following retirement he worked for several years at Whitaker Cable
Company in Junction City, Kansas and at the Fort Riley Housing Division.

Foster married Gertrude (Trudy) Gopsky Stanford in 1947 and celebrated 38 years of marriage
before her death in 1985. After relocating to Bull Shoals, Ark., he married Marguerite (Peg)
Peterson in 1993. She preceded him in death in 1995. In 1998, he married Nancy Harman of Bull
Shoals, Ark. who preceded him in death in 2006.

CSM (Ret.) George is remembered by many for his wit, his smile, and his devotion to the U.S.
Army. His soldiers, commanding officers and family were secure in knowing the Sergeant Major
always has your back. To all who knew his fondness for singing this song, for the many places
he has roamed, over land and sea and foam, this soldier has been shown the way to go home.

His life is celebrated by his five children; Stephen George, Wichita, Kan., Harold (Howie)
George, Hutchinson, Kan., Sharon O'Neal, Lincoln, Neb., Martha (Marty) Rombold and her
husband, Peter, Junction City, Kan., and Elizabeth (Liz) George and her husband, Charlie
Johnston, of Lewisville, Texas. Six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive. He is
survived by his siblings Mary (Betty) Butler, Robert George, and Catherine Henderson. His
siblings Patricia Faust, Harry Lee George, Jr., Angela Powell, Margaret Stiegerwald and Edward
George preceded him in death. Many nieces and nephews survive.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. March 29, 2010 at Fort Riley's Main Post
Cemetery.
