Theory:Sometimes we want to determine the response(current, voltage or power

delivered) in a single loop resistance in network, then the thevenins theorem
enable us to replace the remainder of the network by a simple equivalent
circuit.determining the response in the low resistance becomes much easier.
The use of this theorem is very helpful and time saving when we have to find the
response in any branch of a given network shown in the fig. for different value of
load resistance.
Here it should be noted that thevenins theorem apparatus has been designed
to measure the following: Thevenins voltage
Thevenins resistance
Measurement of current through load.

Procedure:1. Temporarily remove the resistance

called load resistance (RL) where
current is required.
2. Find the open ckt. Voltage(Voc)
which appears across the two
terminals from where resistance
has been removed.it is also called
thevenins voltage (V th).

1. Compute the resistance of the whole network as looked into from there two
terminals after all voltage source has been removed leaving behind their
internal resistance. It is also called thevenins resistance Rth.
2. Replace the entire network by a single thevenins source, where voltage is
Vth and whose internal resistance is Rth.
3. Connect RL back to its terminals from where it was previously removed.
4. Finally, calculate the current flowing through RL by using the equation =>
I = (Vth/Rth+RL)
Calculate the current flowing through the RL as shown in the diagram by
using thevenins theorem: Connect the ckt. As shown in fig.through patch cords i.e.:- disconnect
the load resistance from output terminals and measure open ckt.
Voltage V th by connecting 15 volt range analog voltmeter across
points z1&z2 . formula used to calculate the voltage drop across z1 &
z2.
To measure the resistance across the x & y points disconnect voltage
source 12v and short the a & b points as shown in fig.(3). Now

connect dmm(digital multimeter) across x & y points .set the mode of

dmm at resistance and note down the value of resistance across x & y
points.formula used to calculate the value of resistance Rth.
To measure the current from load resistance RL(25,50,100
ohm).connect the ckt. As shown in fig.(4) i.e.:-connect current meter
of 15 miliamp. Range in series of load resistance.
Equivalent ckt. of fig. is also shown by fig.(5).
