Light a Candle for Children

September 13 through
October 18 has been designated as
Light a Candle for Children Vigil
culminating with the church
service on October 18.
The theme for this years Childrens
Sabbath is: How Long Must I Cry for Help?
It often reflects the desperate needs of myriads
of children around the world for food, shelter,
clothing, education and more.
There will be daily devotions
distributed to the congregation the last week of
the vigil. Each Sunday Childrens Moments
will lift up a need for children and a candle
will be lit to remind us of the need of children
around the world.

Homelessness: Next Steps for Fullerton

Neighbors United for Fullerton, a
nonprofit commonly known as NUFF, is
hosting a free community forum titled
Homelessness: Next Steps for Fullerton?
from 6:45 to 8:45 P.M. Monday in the Osborne
Room of the Main Library.
The issue of balancing the citys moral
obligations to help people in need with the
obligation to uphold the law and provide
quality of life for residents and businesses will
be discussed.
The panel will feature Orange County
Supervisor Shawn Nelson, former
Assemblywoman and Fullerton Mayor Sharon
Quirk-Silva and Officer Mike McCaskill of the
Fullerton Police Department.
Information: nuffpac.org .

Harvest Festival

Its not too late to help

with this great community
outreach project being organized by Casa de
Oracin to be held on October 31, from 4 - 8
P.M. in Fellowship Hall and Patio areas. It will
be a carnival atmosphere with games, bounce
house, cotton candy, popcorn, and prizes.
Each child will go home with a bag of goodies.
We have been asked if we would like to
partner with them in this celebration.
Here are some ways we can help.
1. You can provide candy for the goody
bags. Just bring any amount that you would
like to provide to the office and Donna will see
that it gets to the right place. You can bring it
anytime. That way we will have an idea of
what we will need to purchase or
2. Help Casa de Oracin set up on
Friday and Saturday.
3. Help to staff the event from 4:00 8:00 P.M. (or any part of the time) on
the 31st
Please let me know as soon as possible
what you would like to be a part of so I can let
the Casa people know for their scheduling and
budgeting .

Senior Adults Met Tuesday, September

15, 2015

The Senior Adult Ministry met this past

Tuesday, September 15, for their monthly
luncheon. There were 17 of us who gathered
to fellowship together, share lunch and hear
from our speaker Rev Nancy Brink and also a
student she brought with her, Annalise who is
a senior at Chapman this year and very active
on campus. We learned a lot about the current
and future plans for the university as well as
all of the wonderful work DOC is doing with
the 100 DOC students on campus.
After the presentation and the invitation
David Moore extended to our group when he
spoke to us, about 10 of us signed up to take a
a tour of the campus. We have contacted David
who will work with Nancy on our visit. We
are looking at dates in Oct. and Nov. that
David suggested and he will need to know
how many are coming soon. Those of us who
signed up are meeting briefly on Sunday. If
you are interested in joining us look for Ed,
Ted or Sammie on Sunday for more details.
Our meeting next month will be on
Tuesday, October 20 at 12 noon. We will share
our lunch time and then move to the Sanctuary
for another delightful musical program by Ed
Zeliff. This will be Eds third concert with us.
You may recall he brought a student last time.
He may do that again this time.
Please save the date, Tuesday, October
21 and join us. Remember all seniors are
invited even if you dont usually gather with
us. Transportation is available if needed.
Contact Sammie Adams 714-993-2418.
Hopefully we will see you then.

Tuesday Night Study Series

Dr. David Matson Lectures

Every Tuesday in October at 7:00
P.M.
Title: "Preach the Gospel"
This is now the sixth year our congregation has
hosted this four-week Bible lecture series from one of the
most gifted, informed, and highly entertaining biblical
scholars in our region. We are very fortunate to
welcome Dr. Matson back to Chapman Lounge each
Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. during the month of
October.
This study will engage in a thorough
biblical investigation of the word "gospel" to
discover why this beloved quotation isn't true and
what impact that realization might have on the way
we think about the work and role of the church
today. Confusion about the gospel results in
confusion about our mission.
Outline:
October 6 The "Gospel" in the Old Testament:
Backgrounds
The word "gospel" doesn't occur very often
in the Old Testament, but when it does, it tells us
much about its nature as an oral event.
October 13 - The "Gospel" in the Proclamation of
Jesus
We are right to think of the gospel as
something that Jesus accomplished for us, but did
you know that Jesus actually preached the gospel
as well?
October 20 - The "Gospel" in the Writings of Paul
Paul is actually our earliest source for the
term "gospel" being used in a distinctly Christian
sense. Actually, the gospel goes back even before
him.
October 27 - Implications
If simply working for social justice is the
gospel, how does the church differ from any other
fine humanitarian organization? Is there any
compelling reason why a person should attend
your church? Do we even need the church, if other
groups and organizations can do the job better?

Concerning The 2015 Reconciliation

Offering
We will receive the 2015 Reconciliation
Offering on Sunday, September 27 and Sunday,
October 4. Resources to interpret this
offering and an envelope for you to use in being

part of it will be available this Sunday, September

20.
The Outreach Ministry,
in keeping with our practice of increasing goals for
special offerings by at least 5% over the prior years
offering, has set a goal
of $600 for this years Reconciliation Offering. Last
year our congregation gave $560 toward this
special offering.
The theme for this years Reconciliation
Offering is: BE RECONCILEDMove Together
Heal Together Bound Together. In resources
provided for us for this special offering it was
noted that . . . 2015 has catapulted the
conversation about human brokenness evidenced
in the sin of racism and perpetuated in our
institutional structures and systems. Thats true.
One can hardly listen to
a news program or read a magazine without
encountering the issue of racism in our nation. The
events that occurred in Ferguson, Missouri,;Staten
Island, New York,;Baltimore, Maryland and
Charleston, South Carolina have been major stories
for many months now.
We remind you that the Reconciliation
Offering funds projects to combat racism in
communities across the U.S. and Canada.
Our Region, for example, will be making
Reconciliation Grants to congregations and
communities who have developed specific projects
to combat racism. These grants will be given early
in 2016. Is there a project to combat racism in
Fullerton that you feel needs to
be undertaken? If so, what are your ideas about
developing and launching such a project? The
Outreach Ministry would welcome input from any
of our members about an anti-racism/proreconciliation project we could undertake by
ourselves, or in partnership with other Disciples
congregations in North Orange County.
If any of you would like to see some of our
2015 Reconciliation Offering dollars directed to
specific projects already underway in Ferguson,
Staten Island, Charleston and Baltimore, let us
know of your interest in doing this. The Outreach
Ministry will be guided
by your in-put about this matter. We will wait until
our October meeting to discuss the possibility of
directing some part of the 2015
Reconciliation Offering of our congregation for one,
or more, of these projects.
In advance, we thank you for your generous
support of the 2015 Reconciliation Offering.

Kids Say The Darndest Things

A first-grade schoolteacher presented

each child in her classroom the first half of a
well-known proverb and asked them to come
up with the remainder of the proverb. Their
insight may surprise you. Remember these are
First graders:
Dont change horse until they stop
running
Its always darkest before Daylight
Savings Time
Never underestimate the power of
termites
Don't bite the hand that looks dirty
You cant teach an old dog new math
If you lie down with dogs, youll stink
in the morning
The pen is mightier than the pigs
An idle mind is the best way to relax
Where theres smoke theres pollution
A penny saved is not much
Don't put off till tomorrow what you
put on to go to bed
Children should be seen and not
spanked or grounded
When the blind lead the blind get out
of the way.
If at first you dont succeed get new
batteries
How might we finish these proverbs?
(Prov. 9:10) The fear of the Lord
(Prov. 19:1) Better the poor walking in
integrity than
(Prov. 20:10) A gossip reveals secrets;
therefore
Prayer: Thank you, O God, for the wisdom
you provide through your word. Help me to be
wise in what I do and what I say. In Jesus
name. Amen.
