Electrification comes first

Transportation Systems

Energy that moves

Railway electrification from Siemens
Unlimited rail mobility has a name: Siemens. Weve been setting milestones in railway electrification since 1879 from the first electric locomotive and first trolley wire
to modern overhead contact lines for ever faster trains and energy storage systems
for mass transit systems.

Innovation born of tradition

Our competence, experience and pioneering spirit are the reasons for the good
reputation we enjoy the world over for our
development, planning, implementation
and maintenance of electrically powered
railway systems. Moreover, our goals are
ambitious: by providing excellent solutions
we want to put the future of rail transportation on the right track for success.
Competence for all problems
The trend toward environmentally compatible rail travel is the way to come to
grips with the ever-increasing volume of
traffic. The railways must keep pace to
ensure their sustained competitiveness.
Above all, the demands for higher speeds,
shorter headways and greater transport
capacities have to be met head-on. We
create the basis for doing that with individual components and turnkey railway
and traction power systems for mass
transit and main-line services.

A strong partner for all project phases

We have the capability to implement
complete electrification solutions. Our
customers get all the services from a single
source from consultancy and planning
to project execution and maintenance.
The crucial aspects are often invisible to
the eye. We employ simulation programs
to calculate such items as electromagnetic
compatibility, while IT-based engineering
tools increase quality and save cash and
time. Our expert teams stand shoulder to
shoulder with you during all project phases:
they develop customized financing concepts and train operating staff. Our global
partners also benefit from these comprehensive services.

Shaping the future

Leadership through research
With over 400,000 employees worldwide, the resources and synergies available to
Siemens help to extend its technological leadership in railway electrification. It is
from this knowhow base that Siemens Transportation Systems repeatedly obtains
vital stimulus for shaping the future of rail transportation.

The future as a challenge

Whoever ceases to become better ceases
to remain good. We use this motto to develop comprehensive solutions for our
customers today that still pay off tomorrow.
Economy and safeguards for the future
are two of the most important guarantees
for the success of modern electrification
systems. Our investments in research and
development give important strategic
leverage for this.
Knowledge is our capital
The comprehensive knowledge of our engineers provides the basis for all practical
innovations, irrespective of whether the
task calls for high-performance contact line
components or low-wear systems, digital
protective units and controllers, or no-break
and energy-efficient traction power supply
systems. The intensive research cooperation
within Siemens and with universities and
independent institutes keeps our level of
knowledge up-to-date.

Innovative: Siprotec 7ST6 line

protection relay
Successful innovations are usually the
result of the symbiosis of our own ideas
and market requirements. This is exactly
how Siprotec 7ST6 line protection relay
came into being. The new integrated control unit replaces the more complicated
concept using two devices functioning
separately. Only by cooperating directly
with our customers was it possible to
shape this innovation so purposefully and
create a safe and reliable solution for a
clearly defined task. The development
process was also accelerated by basing
that solution on a successful and proven
Siemens product family.

Designing efficient supplies

Safe traction power supplies
Traction power supply systems provide energy for main-line and mass transit
operations, for trams and light rail vehicles as well as for long-distance trains.
Siemens offers individual solutions for all market demands, no matter whether
they are for high or medium-voltage systems, transformers, rectifiers, substation
controllers or SCADA.

Tested components you can rely on

Absolute safety for people and equipment
as well as safeguarding of the customers
investment are the top priorities when
designing our traction power systems. We
test our components under real operating
conditions before they are used. This is the
only way to create quality products on
which the rail operator can always rely.
Optimization by simulation
The expected energy requirement is determined precisely in the preliminary planning
stage. We use innovative simulation and
optimization programs to design every
system cost-effectively and to customer
requirements and to build in reserve capacity for the future. The smart combination of
electrical and mechanical engineering and
electronics gives us the means to creating
highly reliable systems that reduce energy
consumption.

Economical and environmentally

compatible
Energy management components from our
Sitras range offer numerous benefits
that make the operation of your systems
more economical, reliable and environmentally compatible. The Sitras SES energy
storage system stores the braking energy
generated by modern mass transit systems
to supply it to other vehicles at a later
time or uses it to improve the quality of
the system voltage. The decisive innovative
feature of Sitras SES is that it combines
service-proven railway technology with
innovative double-layer capacitors and
thus opens up completely new technical
and economic possibilities. The energy
storage system operates in parallel to the
existing traction power supply system.

Quality knows no limits

Reliable contact lines
Modern contact line systems are the lifeblood of railway mobility. Reliability plays a
crucial role wherever trains travel on electrified lines. The name Siemens guarantees
lasting solutions also in this sector, on all continents of the world, thanks to the
constantly high quality of all its products and systems.

Economy through flexibility

Contact line equipment constitutes a major
investment. We consider the specific requirements at every project phase to
increase the service life of our systems.
Selection of exactly the right materials is
as equally important as system adaptation
to the differing climates and topologies.
Know-how and ability
an unbeatable pair
The desired results are achieved only when
theory and practice work hand-in-hand.
Contact lines not only have to be planned
and professionally designed to fulfill requirements, they must also be installed
quickly and reliably. Our specialists know
their trade and fulfill contracts skillfully,
reliably and punctually, even under unfavorable conditions.

Throwing the switch for success

with professional IT tools
When the job deals with train dynamics
optimization, integration of contact lines
in tunnels and on bridges or safe structural
engineering, we employ excellent IT tools
for planning and project engineering that
our own specialists develop after many
years of project experience. An example
of this is the configuring tool Sicat Master
that supports both loading analyses and
preparation of layouts and profiles, and
also the registration of track data and
optimization of constant-tension section
lengths. The Sicat Dynamic simulation
tool is employed, for example, for the
calculation of the interaction between
the contact line and pantograph. All of
our IT tools are, of course, matched to
each other in favor of uniform data processing and consistency of the results.

Achieving great things together

Mutually instead of separately
By working together as partners and continually striving to achieve a balance between
requirements and solutions, the customer and the supplier create the all-important
basis for achieving mutual success. Siemens Transportation Systems lives and works
to promote such win-win relationships. Every day. All over the world.

A real global player

We are at home in all our markets and
speak the language of our customers. We
are sensitive to their distinctive traits and
know the local regulations. This makes it
possible for us to engage in know-how
transfer and the provision of local content
by involving companies resident in the
most varied parts of the world. A positive
side effect of this is that we can process
orders considerably faster and at lower
cost, thanks to this local production
capability and short transport distances.
This also means a quicker return on
investments.
Thinking globally acting locally:
Customer wishes are our command
The needs of our customers are as varied
as the differences in their infrastructures,
topographies and climates. And these
needs are what we focus on from the
very beginning of each project: from joint
definition of the task and analyses of what
is required to detailed and expert consultancy in matters of system configuration,
component selection and the selection of
possible partners for a consortium.
Made-to-measure financing
We develop flexible financing concepts
in close collaboration with local authorities,
government agencies and commercial
banks all over the world.

Outstanding project management

The international awards won by some of
our projects speak for themselves. Professional project management and the right
balance between time, cost and quality
are the key to success. An instinctive feel
for what is needed is just as important as
experience, know-how and the transparency achieved through seamless documentation of all measures and goals. This
enables us to discover potential for savings
and development, to simulate and evaluate
the pros and cons of different solutions in
terms of lifecycle costs and to avoid errors
by adopting standardized procedures. And
it ensures cost-effective and efficient processing of all aspects of our projects which
create systems that can satisfy today the
specific demands of tomorrow.
Our work carries on even after the
project has been completed
Our quality-oriented company culture,
apparent from preparation of the order to
our reliable after-sales service, is one of
the extras that we contribute to every
professional partnership. By consistently
fostering the skills and creativity of our
employees and by engaging in constructive, trusting and long-term collaboration
with our customers, we fulfill our responsibility towards society in all parts of the
globe and also help to secure the future
of our customers.
