The Barnabas Ministry Team

A new ministry team has formed at MUMC. The Barnabas

Ministry Team, patterned after a Barnabas Ministry Team
at Trinity UMC in Aiken, SC, is a ministry that will quietly
and anonymously reach out to our congregation, cheering
folks on in times of joy and offering comfort in times of
sorrow or illness.
The name of the team, Barnabas, comes from the
early Christian disciple, Barnabas, and means son of
encouragement.
This ministry of encouragement is totally self-sufficient
and will receive no funding from the church. Twelve folks
are intent on loving this congregation as Jesus loved,
loving one another as I have loved you, without seeking
any praise or reward. This Team will be serving the church
and congregation in a totally unique way.
The ministers of MUMC have given their blessing to this
new ministry team. The team represents all ages and
groups of our church. We have a Barnabas Ministry Team
box in the office, which will be checked regularly, so that
anyone knowing of someone who needs Barnabas may
leave us a message there.
We ask for your prayers as we begin this Barnabas Ministry
Team. You will be hearing from Barnabas.

VBS Collection Results

The final count is in! Thanks to everyone for helping

collect 2 barrels of shoes for Nicaragua, a carload of
supplies for Second Chance Animal rescue, and $1500 to
buy 1500 pairs of shoes through Soles4Souls as well as
over $200 to donate to Second Chance! What a difference
our VBS kids make in the world!!

Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has a donation

org/umcor/programs/disaster-response/internationaldisaster-response/europemigrants. UMCOR is a 75-yearold organization that spends 100 percent of designated
donations on the projects our donors specify. When
UMCOR donors give their time, money, and supplies, they
join UMCOR as the hands and feet of Christ.

You Can Help Overcome Hunger

Individuals, families, and small groups are needed to join

the Columbia CROP Hunger Walk. Contact Judy Parsons or
Cleo Kottwitz, 573-446-0799, for a donor envelope; secure
asmany sponsors as possible, and join with interfaith
volunteers at Wilkes Blvd UMC, Sunday afternoon, Oct.
18. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Walks begin at 2 p.m.
Choose either a one mile walk or a 2.5 mile walk. Walk
proceeds assist the world wide ministries of Church World
Service plus 4 local agencies: Loaves and FishesSoup
Kitchen, Latter House Kingdom Ministries Food Pantry,
Fifth Street Christian Community Meal, and Russell Chapel
CME Food Pantry. Now is the time! Get an envelope and
start contacting sponsors!

Thanks to Wardrobe

Last Friday afternoon Container Project volunteers filled

nearly 30 black bags with summer clothing and shoes
at the Wardrobe to be shipped to Rainbow Network in
Nicaragua. Wardrobe Director, Evette Nissen, (a member
of MUMC) had called to announce seasonal changeover
of clothing and offered the summer clothes to Container
Project. What a blessing! Thank You...Thank you! This
week MUMC volunteers are neededat the PET Warehouse,
1908 Heriford Rd., to sort and pack the clothes for
shipment. Call LaVonne Patterson, 573-239-3158 to join
with others.

SATURDAY: Mark 14:3-9 Scolding and shaming

REFLECTION: Imagine how the woman felt when the people scolded her.
Was she shamed? Was she resolute? How do you respond to scolding or
shaming situations?
PRAYER: Words hurt! Jesus, may I speak with wisdom, love and care. May your
words be like a balm over the negative words that have been spoken to me.

FRIDAY: Mark 14:3-9 Breaking!

REFLECTION: Broken things tend to have less value in our society. Think
about what broken means in this story.
PRAYER: As scary and vulnerable as it is, may I see my own brokenness
and seek you for healing.

THURSDAY: Mark 14:3-9 Jesus hanging out with lepers

REFLECTION: Before we get to the story, it is important to note that Jesus
is being hosted by one who is left out, thought to be the least a leper.
PRAYER: For the lost, least, last and leper among us Lord, hear our prayer.

WEDNESDAY: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 The gift is given

REFLECTION: Looking at the menu of gifts, it would be culturally
acceptable for us to choose which ones wed prefer, right? However, the
gifts, like grace, are given to us.
CAUTION: Comparing your gifts to others may cause ungratefulness.
PRAYER: Like a kid on Christmas Day, may I open and receive my gifts. Then
may I enjoy them as I share with others. Lord, I receive your gifts and joy!

TUESDAY: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 Holy Spirit activates gifts

REFLECTION: Develop a relationship with the Holy Spirit. Why? Because
it is the Spirit who activates the gifts in you.
PRAY: Read John 14 to learn about the character of the Holy Spirit.

MONDAY: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 Variety is the spice of life

REFLECTION: The diversity among the gifts is what makes church and
life so exciting! It reminds me of Lawrys seasoned salt. Its not just
salt; it has a blend of other spices making it delicious.
ACTION: Think of the people in your family. What gifts do they bring to
Gods church? Make time to share what you see in them.

What I want to talk about now is the various ways Gods Spirit gets
worked into our lives. This is complex and often misunderstood, but I
want you to be informed and knowledgeable. Remember how you were
when you didnt know God, led from one phony god to another, never
knowing what you were doing, just doing it because everybody else did
it? Its different in this life. God wants us to use our intelligence, to
seek to understand as well as we can... Gods various gifts are handed
out everywhere; but they all originate in Gods Spirit. Gods various
ministries are carried out everywhere; but they all originate in Gods
Spirit. Gods various expressions of power are in action everywhere; but
God himself is behind it all. Each person is given something to do that
shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. All kinds
of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! The
variety is wonderful...

Learn About UMVIM Ministry in Honduras

Join the Office of Mission, Service and Justice Ministries as we welcome Sandra
Raasch, UMVIM Coordinator and GBGM Missionary in Honduras. We will gather
at the Missouri Annual Conference office (3601 Amron Ct, Columbia) at 10 a.m.
on Friday, Sept. 25 for this presentation. Sandra will be sharing about her
experiences, and offering insights to the UMVIM ministry in Honduras.

Haiti Clean Water Team Trip in January

The Haiti Clean Water Team is headed back to install water filters in January.
The tentative dates are Jan. 11-17 (subject to change based on flights). There
are two spots open on the team, and we would love for you to join. Contact Rev.
