Introduction
BS 5000 consists of separately published Parts each of
which specifies the unique combination of characteristics
and requirements of machines of a particular type or design,
or of machines intended for a particular purpose or
application. These Parts will refer to relevant requirements
specified in BS 4999 'General requirements for rotating
electrical machines', and may also specify other require.
ments not established in BS 4999. They may also identify
specific requirements where BS 4999 permits a choice,

When specifying, or referring to, a complete machine of a

particular type or for a particular application, reference
should always be made to the appropriate Part number of
t h i s standard as indicated in the appropriate marking clause.
Machines may comply with the requirements of more than
one Part of this standard; for instance a type N motor with
standard dimensions and outputs might comply both with
the requirements of Part 10 and with the requirements of
Part 16.
BS 5000 includes this separately published index of the
numbering of Parts and the general contents of the standard
envisaged in the foreseeable future; spaces have been l e f t
unallocated where additional Parts may ultimately be
required. Only the Parts marked with an asterisk have been
published a t the date of issue of this index, those not so
marked being either in course of preparation or planned
for future publication.
It i s not anticipated that all of the individual Parts will be
issued in numerical sequence; as new Parts of the standard
are issued, the index will be brought up to date to indicate
the current position.
